Sony pulls v2.40 firmware, denies full retro-trophy support

[UPDATE] Sony says it is "working diligently to isolate the problem," shoots down reports claiming all past games will get awards; Burnout Paradise first to give trophies retroactively, Uncharted next for prize patch.

As was announced Monday, today saw the launch of the v2.40 firmware update for the PlayStation 3. The long-awaited update--previewed by GameSpot Hardware--adds the ability to access the console's XrossMediaBar (XMB) and use select features from it in-game. (Players can also access other XMB features directly, but will have to quit gameplay.) It also came alongside a slight tweak to the PlayStation Store, which adds list views and caches images, preventing the need to load previously viewed art assets each time one visits the store.

The v2.40 update will also launch the long-awaited trophy system, the PS3's answer to Xbox 360 Achievements. Though every game for Microsoft's console bestows awards, only three already-released first-party PS3 games--PAIN, Warhawk, and Super Stardust HD--will get the feature this week in the form of patches.

Sony also announced this week that a spate of upcoming titles will sport trophies from the get-go, including LittleBigPlanet, MotorStorm Pacific Rift, NBA 09, PixelJunk Eden, Resistance 2, and SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation. Speaking with GameSpot, director of PlayStation Network Eric Lempel also said that eventually, all new releases for the PS3--both first-party and third-party--would have trophies.

However, Sony today refuted a spate of online reports claiming all past, present, and future PS3 games would one day get trophies, dashing hopes that Lair completionists would be rewarded for revisiting their efforts. As Sony previously stated, it is putting the onus onto both third-party publishers and its own internal studios as to whether they want to take the time to add trophies to games already on the market.

While Konami hasn't said whether or not it will add trophies to its multiplatinum Metal Gear Solid 4, Sony today confirmed that a pair of PS3 hits--Electronic Arts' Burnout Paradise and Sony's own Uncharted Drake's Fortune--would soon be patched with their own awards. No date for either update has yet been set, with Sony saying both will get patched "soon."

The official Web site of Burnout Paradise's developer, EA-owned Criterion Games, also revealed the patch will be the first update to retroactively award trophies automatically. "Trophies will be awarded based on your progress in your existing save game," the developer said in a statement. "When the update arrives the trophies you have earned will reflect the progress you've made in the game at that time (so you won't have to replay the game again to earn trophies)."

Speaking to GameSpot last week, Lempel indicated no PS3 games would be awarded trophies retroactively, and no other such patches have been announced. It appears that Criterion was able to include the functionality by planning ahead for trophies' inclusion. "We can reveal that this is why your Burnout Paradise save game has always been locked to your PlayStation Network id--so we could guarantee that when PlayStation Trophies arrived that your save game would reflect your progress," the developer stated.

Unfortunately, it appears as if the v2.40 update wasn't available for long. A rash of complaints on the official PlayStation message boards claim the heavily anticipated update caused many PS3s to lock up when owners attempt to load a game. The problem does not appear to be exclusive to an individual hardware model, as owners of 40GB, 60GB, and 80GB consoles have all reported problems.

Sony did not respond to GameSpot's request for comment, but apparently took action by pulling the update from the PlayStation Network. Following reports from forum-goers, GameSpot attempted to download the v2.40 to a PS3 running v2.36 firmware--only to find the update is no longer available.

[UPDATE] Thursday morning, Sony posted a note on the PlayStation Blog explaining the situation. "We have temporarily taken firmware v2.40 offline," said Sony Computer Entertainment America corporate communications director Patrick Seybold. "We've received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up."

Maybe it'll be like Valve's steam when it first started. Buggy as @#$ but gets better over time.

exactly, i play games to game, not to care about trophys. meh if i cared id go back to school and get on a track team. The only "trophy" we cared about back in the 90's were having your initials in NBA JAM at the arcade. Trophies are kinda stupid. Then again i got a 360 and PS3 and i could care less for online for either, PC gaming is for that and its better

I still don't understand the fascination of useless achievement points that do nothing to add to the gaming experience aside from making you waste time playing GHIII games with a regular controller and wandering the depths of Blue Dragon for Golden Poo Snakes. It's to the point where some 360 owners go out and play crappy games just to get 1000 points for what? Nothing. You can't use the points for anything except to show people how much useless crap you wasted your life doing when you could be spending your time and money playing a good game and trying to beat it and unlock a special ending.

Man, I think Sony users have been very patient but this is getting annoying. I was actually in the process of downloading the update when an error occurred, and I later found out that Sony pulled the plug on the update for the time being. I guess we have to do even more waiting. In the meantime, I will be playing COD4, and I can afford to wait for the update, but I think it's pretty frustrating that Sony keeps on screwing up. Not only was in-game XMB not out-of-the-box, but it still has issues that need fixing and tuning. Dont know how much more of waiting I can do, but hopefully something will be done soon.

I guess we're screwed until the patched version comes out, even though I haven't noticed any major hiccups.

Downloaded it today at noon and everything works fine :) The download time was a lot shorter than i expected too. The only issue is that everything takes a while to load (ex. your profile details and XMB icons in game) but sony will probably patch that with the next update just like they did when the new PS Store came out and was slow loading icons. I didn't relize they did anything with the store in this update cuz i only check the Store on Thursdays for the new stuff.

This sucks. I tried to download the update earlier and my system said I had the most current software. I hope they fix this soon, but moreover I wish Sony would get it together.

I got it no problem thus far. However one of my clan friends can't use his PS3 at all as it freezes. Lookslike a lot of people have it. No doubt they will come up with a fix for it eventually. Also why are people saying "at least it dosen't break your PS3 like the 360"? Can't recall that happening to mine in like 3 years of patches. Some people really do feel they need to justify their purchases by trying to discredit others... Stuff breaks, technology breaks, deal with it and you won't cry everytime it happens, which it will :)

sorry guys I have a 60GB and I had no problems downloading at 10pm last night. I did however notice that the patch for Super StarDust would crash and restart during download. But I figured out that if you erased the save data first there wasn't a problem. Same with PAIN BTW. Everything is good and I have a few trophies.

There are very few with problems!!! Dont worry about it. from sony We are aware of a limited number of consumers experiencing an issue with installing firmware 2.40 on PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to enabling the community and XMB access features delivered in the 2.40 update. In order to further assess the issue, we have temporarily taken the firmware offline for further testing. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.

The problem I have with people posting is that its not a big problem when someone downloads something there can be problems!!! Mine works fine did I get a different one than you?? No I didnt so then the small percent of people who complain make it seem as if the update messes up all systems who downloaded it which is just not true.

Everything about the update is beginning to look less and less appealing. Sony would do much better to strengthen the features the PS3 already has and save stuff like this for the PS4 than try to cram as much as it possibly can into a black box. Really makes me nostalgic for the days of Sega consoles where you'd boot up and play games, none of this update and media shmeal. then again, that's why I keep my Dreamcast handy after nine years.
