Sony pulls v2.40 firmware, denies full retro-trophy support

[UPDATE] Sony says it is "working diligently to isolate the problem," shoots down reports claiming all past games will get awards; Burnout Paradise first to give trophies retroactively, Uncharted next for prize patch.

As was announced Monday, today saw the launch of the v2.40 firmware update for the PlayStation 3. The long-awaited update--previewed by GameSpot Hardware--adds the ability to access the console's XrossMediaBar (XMB) and use select features from it in-game. (Players can also access other XMB features directly, but will have to quit gameplay.) It also came alongside a slight tweak to the PlayStation Store, which adds list views and caches images, preventing the need to load previously viewed art assets each time one visits the store.

The v2.40 update will also launch the long-awaited trophy system, the PS3's answer to Xbox 360 Achievements. Though every game for Microsoft's console bestows awards, only three already-released first-party PS3 games--PAIN, Warhawk, and Super Stardust HD--will get the feature this week in the form of patches.

Sony also announced this week that a spate of upcoming titles will sport trophies from the get-go, including LittleBigPlanet, MotorStorm Pacific Rift, NBA 09, PixelJunk Eden, Resistance 2, and SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation. Speaking with GameSpot, director of PlayStation Network Eric Lempel also said that eventually, all new releases for the PS3--both first-party and third-party--would have trophies.

However, Sony today refuted a spate of online reports claiming all past, present, and future PS3 games would one day get trophies, dashing hopes that Lair completionists would be rewarded for revisiting their efforts. As Sony previously stated, it is putting the onus onto both third-party publishers and its own internal studios as to whether they want to take the time to add trophies to games already on the market.

While Konami hasn't said whether or not it will add trophies to its multiplatinum Metal Gear Solid 4, Sony today confirmed that a pair of PS3 hits--Electronic Arts' Burnout Paradise and Sony's own Uncharted Drake's Fortune--would soon be patched with their own awards. No date for either update has yet been set, with Sony saying both will get patched "soon."

The official Web site of Burnout Paradise's developer, EA-owned Criterion Games, also revealed the patch will be the first update to retroactively award trophies automatically. "Trophies will be awarded based on your progress in your existing save game," the developer said in a statement. "When the update arrives the trophies you have earned will reflect the progress you've made in the game at that time (so you won't have to replay the game again to earn trophies)."

Speaking to GameSpot last week, Lempel indicated no PS3 games would be awarded trophies retroactively, and no other such patches have been announced. It appears that Criterion was able to include the functionality by planning ahead for trophies' inclusion. "We can reveal that this is why your Burnout Paradise save game has always been locked to your PlayStation Network id--so we could guarantee that when PlayStation Trophies arrived that your save game would reflect your progress," the developer stated.

Unfortunately, it appears as if the v2.40 update wasn't available for long. A rash of complaints on the official PlayStation message boards claim the heavily anticipated update caused many PS3s to lock up when owners attempt to load a game. The problem does not appear to be exclusive to an individual hardware model, as owners of 40GB, 60GB, and 80GB consoles have all reported problems.

Sony did not respond to GameSpot's request for comment, but apparently took action by pulling the update from the PlayStation Network. Following reports from forum-goers, GameSpot attempted to download the v2.40 to a PS3 running v2.36 firmware--only to find the update is no longer available.

[UPDATE] Thursday morning, Sony posted a note on the PlayStation Blog explaining the situation. "We have temporarily taken firmware v2.40 offline," said Sony Computer Entertainment America corporate communications director Patrick Seybold. "We've received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up."

Ranteal Why does everything have to be so difficult for Sony? Do they not plan ahead on this stuff _____________________________________________________ That's what I'm thinking aswell. Since the launch of the PS3, they seemed to be an "on the whim" type of company. We probably won't even see Home till 2010 lol I personally stopped caring anymore. I've got my PS3, I play my games offline and online and both work. The in game XMB isn't all that great either and doesn't seem to really serve a purpose.

Logan1659 "This is why the Xbox360 is better,AT! least the online there is better and more implement then the PS3!" Do I have to mention the RROD fiasco? So what, Sony made a mistake. But at least it wasnt a fatal mistake. The systems that were affected by the freeze aren't bricked. They can be fixed. Sony isn't a software company anyways. Sony = hardware. Thats exactly why the RROD occurred with 360's, MS is a software company, therefore.... they made a mistake with hardware. Sony is a hardware company so aren't they allowed a software mistake? I think so.

Message to Sony, instead of half-assing they should come up with a unique way to compete with 360, i mean come on, this is the best you can do. Still can't listen to music while playing games, which is what's great on the 360. Trophies aren't for every game. And, apparently it causes problems. Are Sony purposely making reasons for people to dislike them? Instead of doing this, just work on the games, who cares about trophies or achievements, as long as the games are worth your money should be enough.

"Trophies will be awarded based on your progress in your existing save game," ---- THANK GOD!!! I've played it ALOT, and I don't want to earn 100% again. :) Very cool! Hope this feature is on MGS4 aswell, 'cause I've put about 50 hours into that game too. :P

Well, though I don't care for this trophy crap. But logically, it should just universally read game saves already on your hard drive. It just doesn't make any sense to me personally. If you're going to compete with XBL's achievement system, atleast do it right. For people that like this useless stuff, XBL as far as I know, still has the upper hand when it comes to this.

so 2.4 is taken off? Hmm.. I got it.. but now i am worried, that if the problem is as bad as to be taken off.. then that means I installed problematic firm in my PS3 right now.. Guess I have to postpone playing PS3.. until 2.41 comes out.

Y'know, I'm wondering how valid this article is. Every comment below seems to say quite to the contrary. Now to add to that list: I've had no problems whatsoever with my 60GB.

I'm not sure whether to be grateful or upset that I didn't download the update this morning when I first saw it. On one hand I'm beyond frustration that the massive patch Sony is implementing to counter some of Xbox Live's services is not only unavailable on the promised due day, but it's also harming systems. On the other I WANT 2.4 NOW! I'm not angry with you Sony, just very disappointed...ok I lied, I'm angry as well.

Why does everything have to be so difficult for Sony? Do they not plan ahead on this stuff. If they cant get a little download like this right, whats gonna happen when HOME is ready for DL? I can see the papers now "PS3's explode in homes across nation, retro trophies still not coming"

this is the time when you give props to the guy who invented the term "epic fail". Although i should note that me and 2 of my PS3-owning friends downloaded this update, not a single one of us has had a problem. However I should also note that another of my PS3 owning friends, the only one who still had GTA IV data on his PS3, did have it fail. Of course, he was able to reformat the HDD with his PC and put it back in and it worked fine, but still... could it be GTA yet again?!?!?

I dl'd it and i didn't notice any problems either. Although this update is really kinda worthless. I tried using custom playlist during Warhawk and it wouldn't let me. Only thing good about the 2.40 update is the clock. Oh well, i guess i'll just go back to waiting for a patched version. BTW, first forum where i don't see any 360 fanboys. Go fig.

i downloaded the update early this afternoon and so far i haven't seen anything wrong. also, to those complaining about sony pulling the update, STOP COMPLAINING! sony pulled it for a good reason. would you rather they NOT fix it and, basically, just give the finger to all ps3 owners by letting people suffer through system troubles because of that update? they're trying very hard to please everyone, and, even if everything isn't perfect, i think they're doing a damn fine job of getting the ps3 up to a point where people can say "it's a great gaming system".

I don't understand why everyone's bashing the trophy system. I think it's great. It allows me to really try for stuff I probably wouldn't do. Typically, I would just play the game, beat it, and probably never play it again. With trophies or achievements (which I have many of), I consistently go back and try new stuff, challenging or otherwise. Not to mention, it gives me a satisfied feeling of accomplishment that others can see, and it allows me to tease my friends for not having the achievements.

Achievements rock. I find them surprisingly motivating and I end up trying things I wouldn't normally do just to see if I can get an achievement for it. I think it's awesome that it's persistent from game to game and it makes me feel like all of my gaming hours are amounting to something more than a happy feeling. What would be truly awesome though would be if Gamer points would earn you points for the X-Box/PS3 store. THAT would rock.
