Sony pulls v2.40 firmware, denies full retro-trophy support

[UPDATE] Sony says it is "working diligently to isolate the problem," shoots down reports claiming all past games will get awards; Burnout Paradise first to give trophies retroactively, Uncharted next for prize patch.

As was announced Monday, today saw the launch of the v2.40 firmware update for the PlayStation 3. The long-awaited update--previewed by GameSpot Hardware--adds the ability to access the console's XrossMediaBar (XMB) and use select features from it in-game. (Players can also access other XMB features directly, but will have to quit gameplay.) It also came alongside a slight tweak to the PlayStation Store, which adds list views and caches images, preventing the need to load previously viewed art assets each time one visits the store.

The v2.40 update will also launch the long-awaited trophy system, the PS3's answer to Xbox 360 Achievements. Though every game for Microsoft's console bestows awards, only three already-released first-party PS3 games--PAIN, Warhawk, and Super Stardust HD--will get the feature this week in the form of patches.

Sony also announced this week that a spate of upcoming titles will sport trophies from the get-go, including LittleBigPlanet, MotorStorm Pacific Rift, NBA 09, PixelJunk Eden, Resistance 2, and SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation. Speaking with GameSpot, director of PlayStation Network Eric Lempel also said that eventually, all new releases for the PS3--both first-party and third-party--would have trophies.

However, Sony today refuted a spate of online reports claiming all past, present, and future PS3 games would one day get trophies, dashing hopes that Lair completionists would be rewarded for revisiting their efforts. As Sony previously stated, it is putting the onus onto both third-party publishers and its own internal studios as to whether they want to take the time to add trophies to games already on the market.

While Konami hasn't said whether or not it will add trophies to its multiplatinum Metal Gear Solid 4, Sony today confirmed that a pair of PS3 hits--Electronic Arts' Burnout Paradise and Sony's own Uncharted Drake's Fortune--would soon be patched with their own awards. No date for either update has yet been set, with Sony saying both will get patched "soon."

The official Web site of Burnout Paradise's developer, EA-owned Criterion Games, also revealed the patch will be the first update to retroactively award trophies automatically. "Trophies will be awarded based on your progress in your existing save game," the developer said in a statement. "When the update arrives the trophies you have earned will reflect the progress you've made in the game at that time (so you won't have to replay the game again to earn trophies)."

Speaking to GameSpot last week, Lempel indicated no PS3 games would be awarded trophies retroactively, and no other such patches have been announced. It appears that Criterion was able to include the functionality by planning ahead for trophies' inclusion. "We can reveal that this is why your Burnout Paradise save game has always been locked to your PlayStation Network id--so we could guarantee that when PlayStation Trophies arrived that your save game would reflect your progress," the developer stated.

Unfortunately, it appears as if the v2.40 update wasn't available for long. A rash of complaints on the official PlayStation message boards claim the heavily anticipated update caused many PS3s to lock up when owners attempt to load a game. The problem does not appear to be exclusive to an individual hardware model, as owners of 40GB, 60GB, and 80GB consoles have all reported problems.

Sony did not respond to GameSpot's request for comment, but apparently took action by pulling the update from the PlayStation Network. Following reports from forum-goers, GameSpot attempted to download the v2.40 to a PS3 running v2.36 firmware--only to find the update is no longer available.

[UPDATE] Thursday morning, Sony posted a note on the PlayStation Blog explaining the situation. "We have temporarily taken firmware v2.40 offline," said Sony Computer Entertainment America corporate communications director Patrick Seybold. "We've received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up."

ctg867: Very well stated post. I had a friend who did a firmware update for BioShock and it gave him the RROD. In the past forums here and on other gamer sites, there have been people with the tales of 360 updates that brick their system. Of course, the Fanbots jumped all over that as well. It's the old, "My dad can beat up your dad!" routine with these Fanbots. It's good to see posters like you keeping level headed and not being a immature tool who posts, "BLANK system rules!" or "EPIC failure" and without any intelligent facts to back it up.

Yeah, I agree with everyone; Sony really blew it bigtime. Saying that "all" PS3 games would have trophies in them was nothing more than yet another big lie from Sony. The fact that only 3 (yes, only three) Playstation 3 games actually have the trophies in them is quite pathetic. What's even worse is that 1st party, 2nd party, and 3rd party developers are not required to add trophy features to games. The same can be said for the background music feature, and the chat-while-playing feature that exists in such a small number of PS3 games. This firmware update really is allowing the defects of the PS3 to be exposed in very high numbers, regardless of the size of the hard drive. When defect happens after you download this firmware update, this is yet another reason why you will be forced to completely reformat your PS3 hard drive, which will take hours and delete all your files.

What I don't understand is that there are Fanbots jumping all over the PS3 glitch. Was the red ring of death an illusion? Before I get flamed, I own BOTH PS3 and 360. I have no loyalties. I think each system has unique capabilities. I thought that the PS3 was outselling the 360 since the price drop and yet the fanbots are here making false claims. If I am wrong then I accept it. See, kids? Making a civil posting isn't difficult.

@ Cipher92 I can't believe you just tried to justify the RROD situation by saying that at least more then half of the people won't get it. Seriously, get a grip. There are a lot more problems other then the ROOD that people get. Repeated overheats, disc read errors, freeze ups, graphical glitches, etc. And problems other then the RROD are only covered for the first year. After one year, you gotta drop $100 to get it fixed. The three year deal only covers the RROD. Their service is the worst part. You call some idiot in India who doesn't know what he's doing, he finally puts you on the repair list, and you gotta wait a day, then 3-5 business days for the box to ship. Then you send in your broken 360, one day wait, then another 3-5 business to ship it to Microsoft. Then another day while they figure out if they can easily fix it or if they give you a refurbished unit. If they can fix it, it's another 3-5 day business right back to you. It's a 360 that is still broken and will break again. If not, your box goes on the shelf, get's fixed later, and becomes a refurbished unit. Instead, you get one of these refurbished units from some other person. That way, they never have to give anybody a new unit, they just keep cycling broken 360s. Sony on the other hand, has intelligent tech support, located in the US, they fix your problem quick, and put you on the replacement list. Then the shipping to you, to them, and back to you 1 day air every way, not crappy 3-5 business day ground like Microsoft uses. And guess what, the majority of the time they will give you a brand new unit, even if it's a problem as simple as a lens issue or a firmware issue. Unlike Microsoft who will just keep giving you broken consoles. And news flash: 360 firmware has bricked 360s before. They've had this problem before, just not en masse. And they've actually turned a free repair to anybody who was out of warranty when their own firmware bricked the console. And if they even did fix it, they would just do a quick fix or give you a refurb, while Sony will give you a new one. So while this situation sucks, they're doing the best you could physically do, and given that this firmware makes in-game XMB superior to the Guide Button on 360, people aren't complaining too much. Let me know next time I can launch an XBLA games directly from Halo 3 okay? Seriously, quit being a fanboy. Know both sides of the situation. This really does suck, and nobody should have to deal with it. Just like the dual-layered Wii disc issue on Brawl, or the GTA IV problems on PS3/360, but **** happens. I'm not happy that it happened, but I'm glad they're fixing it right. And since their service is better then the competition, you need to take that into consideration.

see, i don't like the backpedaling. i love Sony.If you put something out there, doesn't seem to work, thats it, just say that. say we put it out, seems to not work just right so we pulled it so we can fix it, my bad. and thats fine, you'd get more respect that way. When you say we have barely anyone say there were problems, and we had such a low call volume to report the problem.....BUT we pulled it anyway just for kicks to fix it. Its BS, if it was such a limited number they wouldn't have pulled it. Just be Honest....whats so wrong with honesty anyway

martinriggs77 Please. Who really cares about trophies anyway? Gaming should be a fun thing, not one with intense, crazy competition to win the most virtual trophies. Yeah, like chicks will think you're cool for having those. Good luck on getting laid you dorks. ================= Well said. I prefer that the PS3 allow us to play music while playing a game.

@CloudyWolf Why do you even bother posting? I consider the 360 copying the Wii "Miis" a failure to MS for not being unique after all this time with Live's features. Quit butt humping the "one console rules all" and get a life. And aren't you late for your 360 fanboy sleepover anyway?

Mine works great. Only problem I've had is one case of slowdown on GTA IV but apart from that all smooth. Just wish that music could be played in game as the music in the background of SVR08 and Virtua Tennis 3 is so annoying. I'd rather have my own music in the background but hopefully one day..

I got a problem with this 2.40 update. I cant turn the cross-color filter on, I mean, I put the filter on while on the XMB, not in game because you cant, but then I put a game and the cross-color filter is off, how can I fix this problem?

Sony players will now be able to see why the 360's achievement system is so addictive. We all love to be rewarded for things. Now reward us with in game music playlists.

The new update nothing or much new for me, first of the XMB is useless unless you going online and let to see if you buddy online then is helpful, other than that, nothing else would work in game, they tell you the exit, and the trophy system is so less supported, i mean if ps3 gonna copy 360 feature, aleasy be bettter not half ass done .

What difference does it make? Seriosuly, some of you sound like spolied brats. You have to wait a few days for XMB bars in-game. To think there are people starving in this world. I hope you don't go up to hot girls complaining about the XMB updates. They'd laugh in your face.

Sweet. I hope the Uncharted trophies come in the next few weeks. I surprisingly want Uncharted to not be retroactive because i want 2 play it again but never really got to it. With trophy support I'll play it again. Now we need an announcement for MGS4 and CoD4 trophies.

My 80GB Motorstorm pack back in 2007 works just fine with V-2.40 However, some stuff that Sony claimed would be in the update was obviously not there. There screw up, they'll fix it soon, no problem and life goes on...

@AJ-2K7.... I had the same problem. It crash twice on me now. The second time it did that, it ask me that there was something wrong with the hard drive and wanted me to reformat the hard drive, meaning everything would've been deleted. I didn't reformat it and just restart the system, and then it booted up normally. I just hope Sony fix this soon.

09231991 Thank For Reading My Comment! I think Sony Said : he he.. we've been in the console market for ever.. we have dominated it with PS2, we know what game developers want. we are not gone put RESTRICTION on them. Those arrogant boys at Redmond will scare devs with all of this crap! Well guess what Microsoft ended up knowing couple of things about software, that help it SHIFT the console war in a different direction. Sony is DEFINTALTY late in the game in recognizing the importance of the dash board, and COMMUNITY building. Sony came in with the PS3 war with the OLD MINDSET Build the best the Hardware, strong game line up (if it ain't broken why fix it attitude). Microsoft with fresh look manged to create a new dimension where Sony is weak and Microsoft is king. How many player online playing COD4 on PS3 Vs Xbox360? XBOX360! 60% more then PS3? Why? for many reasons, but they all boil to Microsoft vision on focusing on the software/dashboard/community of the console. In this, they created a whole new battlefield for Sony.

I dont like the fact the new update makes you sing to your PS3 to turn it off. I really dont have a good singing voice, and my PS3 has a weird taste in music. I mean, I had to buy a Hootie and the Blowfish CD off itunes just so I would know the words. Also, why wont the Blu-Ray work unless it smells BBQ cooking? I dont eat that much grilled meat, its really biting into my budget.
