Sony pulls v2.40 firmware, denies full retro-trophy support

[UPDATE] Sony says it is "working diligently to isolate the problem," shoots down reports claiming all past games will get awards; Burnout Paradise first to give trophies retroactively, Uncharted next for prize patch.

As was announced Monday, today saw the launch of the v2.40 firmware update for the PlayStation 3. The long-awaited update--previewed by GameSpot Hardware--adds the ability to access the console's XrossMediaBar (XMB) and use select features from it in-game. (Players can also access other XMB features directly, but will have to quit gameplay.) It also came alongside a slight tweak to the PlayStation Store, which adds list views and caches images, preventing the need to load previously viewed art assets each time one visits the store.

The v2.40 update will also launch the long-awaited trophy system, the PS3's answer to Xbox 360 Achievements. Though every game for Microsoft's console bestows awards, only three already-released first-party PS3 games--PAIN, Warhawk, and Super Stardust HD--will get the feature this week in the form of patches.

Sony also announced this week that a spate of upcoming titles will sport trophies from the get-go, including LittleBigPlanet, MotorStorm Pacific Rift, NBA 09, PixelJunk Eden, Resistance 2, and SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation. Speaking with GameSpot, director of PlayStation Network Eric Lempel also said that eventually, all new releases for the PS3--both first-party and third-party--would have trophies.

However, Sony today refuted a spate of online reports claiming all past, present, and future PS3 games would one day get trophies, dashing hopes that Lair completionists would be rewarded for revisiting their efforts. As Sony previously stated, it is putting the onus onto both third-party publishers and its own internal studios as to whether they want to take the time to add trophies to games already on the market.

While Konami hasn't said whether or not it will add trophies to its multiplatinum Metal Gear Solid 4, Sony today confirmed that a pair of PS3 hits--Electronic Arts' Burnout Paradise and Sony's own Uncharted Drake's Fortune--would soon be patched with their own awards. No date for either update has yet been set, with Sony saying both will get patched "soon."

The official Web site of Burnout Paradise's developer, EA-owned Criterion Games, also revealed the patch will be the first update to retroactively award trophies automatically. "Trophies will be awarded based on your progress in your existing save game," the developer said in a statement. "When the update arrives the trophies you have earned will reflect the progress you've made in the game at that time (so you won't have to replay the game again to earn trophies)."

Speaking to GameSpot last week, Lempel indicated no PS3 games would be awarded trophies retroactively, and no other such patches have been announced. It appears that Criterion was able to include the functionality by planning ahead for trophies' inclusion. "We can reveal that this is why your Burnout Paradise save game has always been locked to your PlayStation Network id--so we could guarantee that when PlayStation Trophies arrived that your save game would reflect your progress," the developer stated.

Unfortunately, it appears as if the v2.40 update wasn't available for long. A rash of complaints on the official PlayStation message boards claim the heavily anticipated update caused many PS3s to lock up when owners attempt to load a game. The problem does not appear to be exclusive to an individual hardware model, as owners of 40GB, 60GB, and 80GB consoles have all reported problems.

Sony did not respond to GameSpot's request for comment, but apparently took action by pulling the update from the PlayStation Network. Following reports from forum-goers, GameSpot attempted to download the v2.40 to a PS3 running v2.36 firmware--only to find the update is no longer available.

[UPDATE] Thursday morning, Sony posted a note on the PlayStation Blog explaining the situation. "We have temporarily taken firmware v2.40 offline," said Sony Computer Entertainment America corporate communications director Patrick Seybold. "We've received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up."

Ugh, when will people get it about not releasing stuff until you know it works? I have had all 3 systems, and I'm always a little wary when I download firmware updates.

Silvermane, in rebuttal, last week I was on a 360 fansite and all anyone wanted to talk about were rumours that the 360 was getting its own "Wii-mote". Copycatting will happen anywhere you have competition. Personally, I like this system a little better because the Platinum trophy suits my completist tendencies. BTW, my v2.40 also works fine, but now I'm stuck staring at an empty trophy cabinet until LBP or Resistance 2 comes out, which kind of sucks.

Goes to show you should ALWAYS wait for the green light that new FW upgrades are safe, and ready to go. With my PSP, for example, I wait about 2-3 weeks before upgrading my firmware...well also because I use certain FW... About PS3 and 360, just wait to make sure the FW updates are fine before rushing out and saying OMG NEW FW FOR TEH PS3!!!111!!!11!!

This stuff just happens. So can all 360 fanboys now just go away? Or do I need to remind you guys of the fall 2006 upgrade that bricked 360 consoles? On topic: running 2.40 without problems. << LINK REMOVED >> (though I still think that with a console that only has a few hardware variations you should be able to test all of them...)

but its seems microsoft was more prepared then Sony when the launched their system. ... I think it's more than safe to say that PROD affected a lot more people than firmware update mishaps like this one. MS hasn't been shy of firmware update problems either. Firmware feature-wise, for sure, but not hardware quality or physical features (common 2.5" SATA, HDMI, WiFi etc,) Anyway, whoever is claiming that playing PS3 games actually crashes the console with firmware 2.4 is having too much fun trolling. I've played Uncharted and watched 3 movies on my day off yesterday, and everything works fine. The people who had the mishap can't boot the system at all. It just freezes at the wave screen after the boot symphony sound byte.

I am now wondering if the crashes are specific to the games you are trying to play of the games you have installed on your system. My freind has an 80 GB, he installed it an no problems. My cousin on the other hand had the same exact problems, and we both had DMC 4 installed. And the comment I made about the 360 being more prepared when they launched their system compared to sony, I was refering to features the systems have to offer for gaming. As far as hardware goes, I think the Sony was more prepared with Hardware reliablity. If Sony does fix 2.4 though, I think the features it offers PS3 fowner will appreciate

My hasn't crashed. I haven't got any trophies yet because I don't have any games that support it yet. So I hope they make so more games use the trophies system soon.

I have an 80 GB model, I downloaded the 2.4 firmwire. My PS3 kept locking up and certians game would load and freeze. After restoring the system and downloading 2.36 update, the freezing and locking stopped completely. I really think not allowing retroactive trophies really is disappointing. There are certain games I won't go back and play for the trophies. I certianly am not a fan boy for any system, but its seems microsoft was more prepared then Sony when the launched their system.

Whether they retroactively put all the trophies in all the games is respective to how serious I'm thinking of buying a PS3. Nice to know you won't have to do everything again if you've already done the games pre-Trophies era. I also have an idea. Why not go further with retroactive trophies? Put them in all the old PS1 and PS2 titles (backwards compatibility should also be sorted out, another thing that's stopping me buying a PS3). If there's anything that would make me play old games again on a PS3 besides probably better loading and clearer graphics, it would be trophies. You have all those fanboys going on about defeating all the Weapons in FFVII or finding everything in a platformer. How cool would it be to back it up with a trophy in your Home room? That's another key thing they need to get right as well. Home-Trophy intergration. I want to show off when I have my e-buddies over at my e-pad, damnit.

console-deity said "if an update can brick random systems then something is seriously wrong." It does make you wonder, however this is certainly not a problem isolated to Sony. When Microsoft updated their marketplace, that update bricked systems as well and it was also widely reported that the last fall update was also bricking 360's. I think a little patience is in order. Besides, when I bought my PS3 it wasn't for custom soundtracks, XMB and trophy support. It's nice they thought to add them but for me it's all just gravy on top of what has already been an excellent gaming experience. I've gone a year without these features already and I'm doing just fine.

It says something really profound when Sony's own programmers have trouble with this system, if an update can brick random systems (not modded ones) then something is seriously wrong.
