Sony pulls v2.40 firmware, denies full retro-trophy support

[UPDATE] Sony says it is "working diligently to isolate the problem," shoots down reports claiming all past games will get awards; Burnout Paradise first to give trophies retroactively, Uncharted next for prize patch.

As was announced Monday, today saw the launch of the v2.40 firmware update for the PlayStation 3. The long-awaited update--previewed by GameSpot Hardware--adds the ability to access the console's XrossMediaBar (XMB) and use select features from it in-game. (Players can also access other XMB features directly, but will have to quit gameplay.) It also came alongside a slight tweak to the PlayStation Store, which adds list views and caches images, preventing the need to load previously viewed art assets each time one visits the store.

The v2.40 update will also launch the long-awaited trophy system, the PS3's answer to Xbox 360 Achievements. Though every game for Microsoft's console bestows awards, only three already-released first-party PS3 games--PAIN, Warhawk, and Super Stardust HD--will get the feature this week in the form of patches.

Sony also announced this week that a spate of upcoming titles will sport trophies from the get-go, including LittleBigPlanet, MotorStorm Pacific Rift, NBA 09, PixelJunk Eden, Resistance 2, and SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation. Speaking with GameSpot, director of PlayStation Network Eric Lempel also said that eventually, all new releases for the PS3--both first-party and third-party--would have trophies.

However, Sony today refuted a spate of online reports claiming all past, present, and future PS3 games would one day get trophies, dashing hopes that Lair completionists would be rewarded for revisiting their efforts. As Sony previously stated, it is putting the onus onto both third-party publishers and its own internal studios as to whether they want to take the time to add trophies to games already on the market.

While Konami hasn't said whether or not it will add trophies to its multiplatinum Metal Gear Solid 4, Sony today confirmed that a pair of PS3 hits--Electronic Arts' Burnout Paradise and Sony's own Uncharted Drake's Fortune--would soon be patched with their own awards. No date for either update has yet been set, with Sony saying both will get patched "soon."

The official Web site of Burnout Paradise's developer, EA-owned Criterion Games, also revealed the patch will be the first update to retroactively award trophies automatically. "Trophies will be awarded based on your progress in your existing save game," the developer said in a statement. "When the update arrives the trophies you have earned will reflect the progress you've made in the game at that time (so you won't have to replay the game again to earn trophies)."

Speaking to GameSpot last week, Lempel indicated no PS3 games would be awarded trophies retroactively, and no other such patches have been announced. It appears that Criterion was able to include the functionality by planning ahead for trophies' inclusion. "We can reveal that this is why your Burnout Paradise save game has always been locked to your PlayStation Network id--so we could guarantee that when PlayStation Trophies arrived that your save game would reflect your progress," the developer stated.

Unfortunately, it appears as if the v2.40 update wasn't available for long. A rash of complaints on the official PlayStation message boards claim the heavily anticipated update caused many PS3s to lock up when owners attempt to load a game. The problem does not appear to be exclusive to an individual hardware model, as owners of 40GB, 60GB, and 80GB consoles have all reported problems.

Sony did not respond to GameSpot's request for comment, but apparently took action by pulling the update from the PlayStation Network. Following reports from forum-goers, GameSpot attempted to download the v2.40 to a PS3 running v2.36 firmware--only to find the update is no longer available.

[UPDATE] Thursday morning, Sony posted a note on the PlayStation Blog explaining the situation. "We have temporarily taken firmware v2.40 offline," said Sony Computer Entertainment America corporate communications director Patrick Seybold. "We've received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up."

I downloaded the update at just after midnight this morning and have had no problems. I have enjoyed hours playing Metal Gear Solid 4 as well as watching Divx videos on my ps3 with no freezing. The XMB is available during Divx playback which is nice. My PS3 is the origional 20gig

The v2.40 is a nice addition but it still has some minor flaws that needs fixing and improovement. Its good to see the Ps3 on a comeback tour, lets see how good these trophy add-ons will get!!

I do not care what they say, bring out, update orrepair!!! I am sick and tired of this whole PS3 mess. I WAS a major PS fan for Years. but the PS3 with all its problems, bad quality Blueray etc...I tell you the best machine in performance and image is still XBOX 360 and it hurts to say it...but the truth must be told!!!!!...at least my truth...hehehehehe...

Hm, I got the patch this morning with no issues. I had a bit of a display hiccup later, though. I hooked up my PS3 at a relatives house to play Rock Band via HDMI the same way I always do and I had audio but no visual. I just hooked it up with high def cables instead and it worked. I'm happy with it other than that.

This patch ruined my PS3 (well not literary). Before i was able to get sound from both my TV through HDMI and my speakers through the optical cable (yeah i was using the bug when you turn on your TV just before your PS3). After i patched my PS3 i ain't able to do this anymore which sucks alot, since my TV has almost better sound than my speakers and its the best sound all in all when it plays through both.

Let's see? 1st it was pricing and lack of games... Then B/C issues, right? Then pricing again. then the wholeinferior online play (which was never defined clearly). Along with the only came the issue of not accessing the xmb. and now the delay of in-game xmb & the whole trophy system. did I miss something? I am sure I did because I was not complaining and playing a good number of enjoyable PS3 games (enjoyable enough that I didn't miss/complain/bash/etc about stuff).

Accessing the PS3 menu while in a game is pretty cool. Now I can respond back to people that send a message while in a game. The date and time in the right corner isn't a bad feature either. I just wish games like Lego Starwars, or Call of Duty 4 was supported.

kinda sucks. I downloaded it at midnight last night and so far the only problem I have had is while playing RSV2, my headset appeared to still be connected but no one could hear me although i could hear them. I checked to try and reconnect it and it wouldn't let me showing that it was still connected. I double checked the ear piece with my phone and it worked fine, so I assume it is a problem with the 2.40 update. anyone else experience this issue?

Ugh, this isn't good news. Pretty big update, so there's opportunity for things to go wrong, but this really does suck. Luckily, they were smart about it, they cut off the downloads so nobody can update it anymore, and per Sony policy, all the consoles will be replaced free of charge. Not to mention the fact that, unlike Microsoft, all the shipping Sony uses now is 1 day air, unlike the 3-5 business day ground shipping that most companies use. So anybody who's having a problem will get a BRAND NEW UNIT, not some supposedly fixed crap or refurbished crap that Microsoft will give you, as quickly as possible. And let me clear this up, since GameSpot did an awful job reporting on trophies the first time, and did it wrong yet again. The only game to have the trophy support from the start is Super Stardust HD, with others getting them down the line. Warhawk will be getting trophies with the 1.5 update, which should be in a month or two, and 10 of those trophies WILL BE RETROACTIVE. While Burnout Paradise will be getting them in a separate update after the July 10th update. Aside from that, everything else announced and heavily rumored is listed below. Anything with a * is heavily rumored, and most likely will be revealed at a later date. Uncharted and Burnout were formerly heavily rumored before they were confirmed in the last couple of days. Former Games To Be Patched: -Burnout Paradise -Dark Sector* -Devil May Cry 4* -Heavenly Sword* -PAIN -Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction* -Resistance: Fall of Man* -Super Stardust HD -The Darkness* -Uncharted: Drake's Fortune -Warhawk Future Gamest To Get Trophies: -Bioshock -Buzz: Quiz TV -LittleBigPlanet -MotorStorm: Pacific Rift -NBA 09 -PixelJunk Eden -Resistance 2 -Socom: Confrontation

This is one of the sad problems with internet being connected to consoles. Don't get me wrong it's great for games, but I think it has made the console makers a bit lazy. Now they have to patch everything rather than doing a very good job the first time. The same switch happened when the internet became used for downloading patches for PC games. All the companies are in such a rush no one seems to test these things well. It's happened on the XBOX and the PS3. These are the sorts of things that should be easily detectable BEFORE release. The hardware is all more or less the same. They can't blame it on vastly different configurations of video cards, memory, and CPUs.

it's cool but only one game support the trophies right now, wich is sad. Sony said 70% of the game support it, yeah, but they still haven't patched their games... I'm hoping for an assassin's creed patch soon. Also, I found a bug, when playing enchanted arms, you can't access the XMB at all. It's really wierd, like it's a ps2 game (wich it isn't)

Mango, how can you NOT say Sony copied the Achievement system? It's BLATANT. Icey: It would be awesome, but it will never happen. It's more profitable that way. Personally, I can't stand the PS3. I'm happy with my 360; until LittleBigPlanet comes out, that is :D

Icey_YaDig I'm not so sure this would be a good thing in the long run. With no competition in the console industry they would be no incentive for them to strive to making a better console. The competition between the two, and in fact all competition between game designers and developers, is the reason gaming is where it's at today

I agree with the person who said that Sony and MS should work together to make a super system. I love my 360, but I fear the inevitable day when I'll get the red 3/4 of a power ring that will mean I'll be without a console for about a month.

I downloaded it last night on my 60GB, and played all day and had no problems. I feel bad for all of the people with problems, but at lest Sony cares enough to listen to the forums, to give us all in-game XMB, and took the download off right away before more people had problems.

Man.... this is a total letdown. I hope that they fix it quick so that I can enjoy it. Also, why did Sony wait until the day of the launch to clear up the rumor of the trophies? Why let everyone be excited for it to be disappointed when they upgrade?!? Come on Sony! I have been by your side from day one, but your pushin it with this constant waiting crap.....

LOL at strawberry9, a stupid MS fanboy commenting on a Sony article. I agree with a past commenter, Sony & Microsoft should work together to create one supersystem. Sony has good hardware, but some software issues whereas Microsoft has good software, yet hardware bugs. The profit they make from that would make nice revenue for both companies, even after they split it amongst themselves. However, this is probably just a stretch of imagination...

And Microsoft fanboys are going crazy... all the while, BLATANTLY FORGETTING that the Xbox 360 has had updates that have BRICKED the console!!! The truth is, MS is a software company with hardware problems and Sony is a hardware company with software problems... It'll work out eventually :)
