Sony planning more Ape Escapes

Forthcoming PS2 game will pit players against mech-equipped monkeys in real Japanese locations. First screens inside.

TOKYO--Sony Computer Entertainment is developing a new Ape Escape installment for its PlayStation 2 console. The company announced it is currently working on Sarugecchu: Million Monkeys (Ape Escape: Million Monkeys) for a scheduled release in Japan this summer.

In Million Monkeys, players will once again take on the comical (and not so bright) Madcap Monkeys. But this time, the monkeys are heavily equipped with high-tech arsenals and mechs, and they're ready to conquer the world. The player will be fighting against an army of the monkeys in stages that are based on real locations in Japan, such as Shinjuku and Akihabara.

In related news, SCE also announced that an anime series based on Ape Escape will begin airing in Japan from April 8. The 15-minute episodes will begin airing on Saturday mornings on the TV Tokyo network.

If anyone form Sony reads this: PLEEEEEZE Bring back Parappa. I love the monkeys, but Parappa would be an awesome late-generation sequel.

If those screenshots are real then I am incredibly happy that they are returning to Pumped & Primed's graphical style. I think it fits the game better. Of course, what really made the Ape Escape series for me was the sheer level of spoof quality that (at least in the case of Ape Escape 2) made it hilarious and fun to unlock new things and play through the whole game. In 3 that sense of humour seemed more absent, and I honestly am not sure how much longer I can stick with the series if it loses its charm and strictly focuses on the "omg monkeys lolz" factor.

For a PS2 title, the graphics aren't bad (as far as the characters and mech looking stuff at least.)
