Sony on why it won't hinder PS4 used games--flexibility creates value

PlayStation boss Jack Tretton says ability to freely resell games creates value in the initial purchase; PS4 won't require online check-in because many countries don't have stable broadband access.

The PlayStation 4 is a consumer-focused machine, and that's why it will not limit used games or require users to connect to the Internet once a day, according to executive Jack Tretton.

"We're most concerned about the consumer. And we really appeal to consumers on a worldwide basis," Tretton told Bloomberg TV. "And I think in the United States, we realize there's a high degree of broadband adoption, but we're in a lot of countries where people don't have the ability to connect on a daily basis and we want to appeal to consumers worldwide."

Speaking about used games, Tretton said the ability to freely share titles with friends or resell them to retailers creates value for the initial purchase. If this flexibility were to be taken away, consumers would be less likely to buy games, he argued.

"The other thing as it relates to the ownership of the game, if people pay a lot of money for that, they equate the value with the flexibility they have in that," Tretton said. "To do with it as they choose; to give it to their friends, sell it to their friends, trade it in to another retailer; that creates value in the initial purchase that they make."

Competitor Microsoft has adopted a policy for the Xbox One that requires users to "check in" with a broadband connection once a day. In addition, though the system will allow used games, decisions will ultimately be left up to individual publishers.

Also in the interview, Tretton spoke about the PS4's design. He called it "beautiful" and "very, very sexy."

"People looked at it, and their jaw just dropped," he said.

Regarding the PS4's $400 price point, a full $100 below Microsoft's $500 Xbox One, Tretton said Sony hit the sweet spot with balancing technological power and a consumer-friendly price point.

"The goal is always to reach the most consumer-friendly price point so you can drive volume as quickly as possible," Tretton said. "But you walk that line between wanting to deliver the ultimate technological experience at a reasonable price and we think we hit a really nice chord at $399 with PlayStation 4."

Riddle me this, riddle me that,

rye96 just told me he got fucked with a big splintered bat.

He wondered how big, bent over and looked towards the floor.

Give it to me harder sir, may I please have some more.

He hollered and yelled, louder and louder it seemed,

Microsoft said "deal with it", I'm out of anal ease.

Gamer s beware M$ will still try maneuver us to all online games, why wouldn't they? they'll make a fortune off us if they could do that plus ISP will want their cut of the extra band with use on line requires. I would suggest seeing which has more games to play off line and quality issues before jumping any ship. beware of M$ wagging tail it may turn around and bite.

digital is an absolute part of the gaming future. that aspect of gaming will need to be regulated and controlled.

we need to make sure it's done appropriately and in a consumer-friendly manner.

@udubdawgz @GS2GZ But who will buy it? I wont and many others will not. They need to think how to making better games, if they want our cash. Somebody will make what we want if money is there to do it. If I wanted my kitchen painted white and painter gave quote for yellow and refused to paint it the color I want for me I would find another painter that would paint it the color I want it to be. First painter would be looking for some other sucker.

i'm always on the lookout for entertaining and inspired free games on the internet.

having that turn into a viable alternative would be great, but, the games would need to improve dramatically.

@udubdawgz @GS2GZ Also who's to say someone wont make game development kits for home users to make any game they want and sell or open source it on a website making game consoles obsolete all together? Some great minds are out there they just need to apply it and become the next billionaire tycoon.

who will buy digital games? not sure i understand your point, since, huge amounts of people already do.

the system needs to be addressed .

as far as, creating better games? lol, i'm right with ya. i am of the opinion that the devs aren't ready for the next-gen consoles, since, they weren't able to make great, quality games on a consistent basis this generation.

gameplay, gameplay, gameplay.

Avatar image for Ragnoraok

@udubdawgz @Csdabest89 buying games at less than %50 off the price you paid then selling them for $5 less than a new copy.

Avatar image for udubdawgz
udubdawgz

@Ragnoraok @udubdawgz @Csdabest89

the problem with your comment is that it's incorrect. used games are my primary method of purchase. i rarely spend more than 19.99 for my games and 15$ is probably the actual norm.

used or unopened "new" games are always those prices after a year or more. oh, and, yes, i wait a long time to buy my games, except, for those very few that i am willing to buy at the full outrageous price;) i'm a very smart consumer.

however, that really isn't the point. the actual problem is that foolish consumers sell their games back to gamestop for such outrageous prices. that's all on them.

gamestop is not the problem.

@1tch @TheFlawedGoblin There is no exclusive game that is worth buying a Spybox that requires the internet and demands used game fees. Technologically speaking it is SLIGHTLY better than PS4 but is it worth it for all the restrictions? No it is not. Plus, I give it one year before PS4 has all the exclusives for the future. Why? Because no one with a brain is going to buy an XBox One.

Avatar image for lawfrye

Why not just buy a PC and game on that? This is the best option, indeed the argument for PC gaming has never been a more viable one. Then you can tell M$ and Sony to eat shit and die like I did a long time ago. I don’t know about you but (Nobody tells me how I’m going to play my games or what I can and can’t do with them). These greedy companies are only going to stop screwing you over when you cut off their “$” supply. But therein lies the rub, most people talk a good game on the internet but when it comes time to act, they just bend over and take it in the ass!

PC gamers on the other hand are generally much more stubborn…and sophisticated than that. Yes we have DRM and shit companies like STEAM to deal with, but at least their pricing is reasonable. For a matter of fact their pricing is downright excellent compared to the amount of $ you console gamers are going to be shelling out for a “download” no hardcopy, no trade in value, and a system that has to be “always on” the internet.

Oh yea, and to all you Sony “fan-boys” out there don’t start rejoicing just yet. Even though Sony say they are not going to be messing with your ability to buy, trade, and use your games the way you want I STRONGLY doubt that they will keep that promise. Buying a PC is your best option…in my case it was the only option. Even with all this DRM and downloadable games my friends and I have no problems with our gaming, and I can make hardcopies of any games I own…easily. Finally if all that wasn’t enough for you remember, these shiny new consoles will only be impressive for about the first couple of years. after which they will start to show their age and even a mid-range PC game machine will be able to outperform these crappy consoles.

Even though you may miss out on some of the exclusive stuff who really cares? There is no “one” game out there worth buying an entire game system over. The PC gets just about every game that comes down the line. Do yourself a big favor this generation… buy a PC!

@lawfrye

A good PC to play games is expensive and needs to be upgraded on a regular basis. On top of that it's easy to get bugs installing games, in great part because of badly created DRMs made by piracy obsessed game publishers. And once an installation is fucked it's often back to "format c://", back to reinstall windows and everything.

Still I agree the PC is fun for games and seeing them in max resolution is great. On top of that some games need a pc, games who use more than the few buttons on a controller (flight sims for instance).

It's up to publishers and since they're obsessed with piracy, while their is little on consoles, you don't see much offering on the pc any more. Thanks to all those who couldn't stop themselves pirating every single game they saw...

Mercgamer74

@lawfrye PC's are good platforms but some gamers aren't as knowledgeable with computers to be able to build a good gaming PC which is one of the reasons use consoles because they are simple to use.

@hngj2002 Why would I cancel a pre-order of the cheaper more powerful system who didn't screw up to begin with? Microsoft has been screwing up for years then going "opps" a "sorry we would do it again" is hardly reassuring.

They've said a number of times their goal is to get rid of disk base gaming and I'll bet money they'll push that idea at ever turn they think they can.

Try harder Microsoft it's not happening.

@Simplythebest12 IMHO I think that's just because people are buying what they hear from online without researching it for themselves. I was ready to abandon ms after I heard the initial rumors but then I researched it and thought it isn't as bad as people think. So it comes down to a matter of preference. I don't think you can wrong with either system. PS: don't think that sony wouldn't screw you. they are a big company, and big companies care about money in the end.

Avatar image for ixSasquatchxx

I hate internet arguments nobody ever wins them. All I'm going to say is that I am leaning towards Xbox One. The features on it that everybody is worried about are only very minor inconveniences to me. The reason I want a Xone is for Halo. I've loved Halo ever since Halo CE came out on the original xbox. That being said I have nothing against sony and would very much like a ps4 myself. And to sony and MS fanboys. Do your research. There are many articles on press conferences that address many issues on the Xbox one. And there are also a lot articles that show innovation from sony.
