Sony has laid off an undisclosed amount of staff at three of its UK developers: Evolution Studios, Guerrilla Cambridge, and SCE London Studio.

VideoGamer reported that "numerous" people from each studio have been let go.

In a statement, Sony said that a recent internal review triggered the need for restructuring at the studios

Sony also adds that developer of delayed PlayStation 4 racer Driveclub was "unaffected" at Evolution Studios. It is not known what projects Guerrilla Cambridge or SCE London Studio were currently working on.

"Regular reviews take place throughout SCE Worldwide Studios, ensuring that the resources that we have in such a competitive business can create and produce high quality, innovative and commercially viable projects," said Sony.

"As part of this process, we have reviewed and assessed all current projects and have decided to make some changes to some of our European Studios. As a result of this, there will be a focused restructure within London Studio, Guerrilla Cambridge Studio and Evolution Studio to ensure that the SCE WWS is in the best position to achieve their goals going forward.

"Our first party development studios are key to our creative strategy and we are very excited about the future projects being worked on."

The economy of Japan is the third largest in the world by nominal GDP, the fourth largest by purchasing power parity and is the world's second largest developed economy. According to the International Monetary Fund, in 2012, the country's per capita GDP was the 22nd highest. Moreover, Japan is the world's largest creditor nation, generally running an annual trade surplus and having a considerable net international investment surplus. As of 2010, Japan possesses 14% of the world's private financial assets - the 2nd largest in the world.

Also, Japan just like the US isn't totally devoid of 'planning' as much as we pretend to not fiddle with our economy like communist planning committees. Just as the US didn't allow GM to fail, Japan is not really going to allow Toyota, Mitsubishi or Sony to fail.

So, yeah, Sony might get smaller or get in or out of different industries...but it is NEVER going away.

You know in monopoly when you're in trouble and you land on a property with a hotel and you are liquidating everything to try to stay afloat? Selling off buildings, and selling property and trading off your stuff for money while keeping your one or 2 groups of property open because they might save you? Sony is in the middle of this.

Now the project lead for Drive Club just left. Something is up and it doesn't look too good.

They've lost $20-30 billion since 2005. The PS3 cost them nearly $6 billion alone. Maybe all of that money lost is catching up on them.

You guys can try and spin this any way you want. But, I would be just a little worried as a PS4 owner.

And this has me worried as well. I'm holding off on getting a PS4 and waiting for the right time but if things like this keep happening I'm not too sure. Not only did they have huge layoffs at key studios, they lost some very important and influential people. Ill wait for another year to see where Sony is at. Maybe that could explain why no key AAA games are coming out. No money to fund them.

Why worry? Is your name on any of those pink slips? You can buy a system today and enjoy life now -- or you can spend another several months worrying about any negative news you read about a system you'll most likely replace in a few years anyway.

No console is an investment. If Sony's viability concerns you, read financial reports from a respected source instead of game blogs that instigate conjecture and "Chicken Little" theories from the undereducated and misinformed. You'll quickly realize that much of the concern is exaggerated. Or, get an XBox.

I'll spend the several months waiting. I want to see where Sony is before I make an investment. The Sony and playstation brand isn't looking too hot and I'm really concerned about them. I don't want to buy another Dreamcast.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I'm not worrying that much. Just "a little" worried. Not sure that I'm going to invest in a platform that doesn't have the financial stability that it needs to back it.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I should have said, IF I was a PS4 owner. I'm a proud XBO owner, but am thinking of getting a PS4 next year. I wonder what's going on over there? Financial situation must be quite dire, and they're cutting back on funding any projects with high RISK, which is definitely something that a game can be.

Personally I don't want Sony Microsoft or Nintendo do go,I want them to stay in the gaming industry for as long as possible because they each have something to offer for a different gaming community, personally I prefer more Nintendo than Sony or Microsoft, but I still play their games as well because they have 1st party games that I like to play and for that sole reason I want all three companies to stay in gaming industry.

They've lost almost 20 billion in the past 8 years, their stock is in junk status, they laid off tens of thousands, and their cutting off a lot. They're in bad shape. Analysts say they're gonna claim bankruptcy in a year or two.

<< LINK REMOVED >> People can freak out all they want. Sure their electronics division is in trouble, but for the games division? They're just being careful with their money. I see it like the sports industry; players get traded and cut every year. Why? Is the franchise bankrupt for cutting players? No, because they're going to spend the money on better players, i.e. Corrine Yu from MS.

Also, investors wanted MS to get rid of the Xbox division. Why? Are they bankrupt because investors believe they're not making money?

Freak out all you want. I can't wait for E3!

<< LINK REMOVED >> agreed. they are trying to do too much and dabble in everything under the sun. they need to keep the profitable sectors (such music, films, games and insurance and expand them even further) and trim off the fat. they have already cut out their laptop division which is a great move. next, they should pull out of the small electronics division such as mp3 players and all that junk.things should improve in their favor over time if they become more focused.

@Blazen702 Remember when the Mini disc was gonna rule the world?? They have a bad habbit of trying to be ahead of the curve on some things that really just seem to have more down side than up. VR is a cool thought but I just dont see it selling unless its really affordable. I could be wrong but its less than a 50/50 chance imo and they dove in.
