Sony Gamers' Day: Hands-onATV Offroad Fury 2
We check out the sequel to Rainbow Studios' Offroad Fury.
ATV Offroad Fury 2 was on display at Sony's Gamers' Day. The game features a number of improvements over the original game, one of which is a refined graphics engine. The rider model is much more detailed and can actually be customized before the start of the race--there's a wide selection of helmets, visors, boots, jerseys, and other accessories to choose from. When you're riding through the environment, mud and dirt can actually get kicked up on your rider and ATV and can be washed off by driving through some water. The environments are incredibly large, giving a good sense of the freedom involved in offroad racing, though there are also plenty of objects, such as trees, to collide with.
Controlling the ATV during a race is pretty easy. Naturally, since you're driving through dirt, there tends to be less traction, so you have to adjust the timing of your turns accordingly, otherwise you'll go careening into a tree or other environmental hazards. ATV Offroad Fury 2 also offers several different camera options, including a first-person view, where you can see your rider's hands on the handle bar. This perspective gives a better sense of speed, but it's a little more difficult to pull off tricks since the camera has to pull out of that view.
While the game will offer online multiplayer support for up to four players, that particular option was unavailable at the event. ATV Offroad Fury 2 is scheduled for release in November.
