For a long time Sony Europe kept quiet about the PlayStation2. Now it breaks the silence and so do we.

In a surprise announcement today, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) unveiled a couple of new titles coming for the PS2 which are meant to ship at the end of the year. Since the PS2 will launch in Europe around fall, many of the unveiled titles should become launch titles in Europe.

Be aware though that the mentioned titles only include games from Studios that are managed by Sony. Third-party games are not considered in this report. Juan Montes, vice president of development at SCEE, said, "Since 1995, SCEE has operated a policy of supporting the best creative and programming talent in the industry. The studios mentioned below have demonstrated the vision and the necessary technological grounding which will allow them to exploit the massive potential of PlayStation 2. All the teams have been extremely enthusiastic about developing on PlayStation 2. The leap in technology between the two platforms is vast and it will be incredibly exciting to see just how far the teams have been able to push the machine in what is a relatively short time."

For sure the biggest surprises in the announcement are the titles Wipeout Fusion and a sequel to Drakan, the popular PC game. When looking at Sony's presented titles, it's recognizable that the company focuses on the biggest markets: racing, sport simulation, and action-adventure.

The announcement includes the following games: Wipeout Fusion, Drakan 2, Spin Sprint Car Racing, Evo Rally, Dropship, The Getaway, Formula One 2000, and a PS2 version of This Is Football. Some of the games will most likely undergo a name change before they are released, but we'll keep you informed as soon as anything changes.

It's also being stated that Studio Cambridge (which created MediEvil and MediEvil 2), Studio Leeds, and Revolution Software (Broken Sword, Broken Sword 2, and the upcoming In Cold Blood) are working on games for the PlayStation 2, but they are in too early a stage of development to report about details of the games.

It looks like after months of interview prohibitions, Sony Europe seems ready to light up the PS2 fires, now that the European launch is only half a year away. It will be interesting to see what European developers come up with for the PS2 in the future, and we've got our people right at the heart of where it happens in Europe. So don't worry; you'll get everything here on GameSpot, hot and cooking. Now join us on a trip through the new PS2 titles in the stories to come.
