Sony E3 2015 Interview: Final Fantasy 7 Exclusivity, Faith in The Last Guardian, Backing Vita

GameSpot speaks with PlayStation Europe's chief executive, Jim Ryan.

During the second-half of the PlayStation 3's lifespan, Sony was publishing acclaimed and exclusive titles with such regularity and creative flair that it made the whole operation seem easy.

Things don't seem so easy at the moment. As we now approach the second anniversary of the PlayStation 4's release, the system still lacks flagship first-party exclusives. Key releases, such as Uncharted 4, have been delayed to 2016, and the slate for this year is, by its own account, "a little sparse."

And yet, PlayStation has entered into one of the most prosperous periods in its 20-year history. The PS4 has become the first choice, both for consumers and the publishers who serve them.

At this year's E3, Sony revealed a powerful and promising line-up of exclusive first-party games, Horizon: Zero Dawn and Uncharted 4 among them. It also put an end to years of speculation by finally reintroducing The Last Guardian--complete with an awe-inspiring gameplay demo--and made dreams come true by announcing a Final Fantasy 7 remake. All of these titles are scheduled to ship in 2016 and beyond, which makes you wonder, if Sony has such incredible momentum already, just how dominant will it be in the months and years ahead?

GameSpot sat down with Jim Ryan, the chief executive of PlayStation Europe, to discuss that future in greater detail.

No Caption Provided

Hi Jim. How has E3 been for you so far?

All good. I enjoyed Monday a lot, I enjoyed all the shows, and you really get the sense that developers are now really confident about next-gen development. They're getting into the swing of things.

It's great to see so many publishers making bigger bets on triple-A games. In the three years prior to the release of Xbox One and PS4, I found that publishers were a little more reserved in terms of how many games they were working on.

Yes absolutely, I think there were a lot fewer games than we would have liked.

Now there's a lot of major franchises in production again, across the industry, and I think a lot of it has to do with the commercial success of the PlayStation 4. I think it has given more incentive for publishers to invest in consoles.

Yeah, and this industry is all about cycles. If you start a virtuous one, you're in a good place. If you're in a vicious cycle, things can get very tough.

With regards to that virtuous circle, Sony has been striking a number of major timed-exclusivity deals with third-party publishers. There's the Capcom deal for Street Fighter V, the Square Enix deal for Final Fantasy 7, and the Activision deal for Call of Duty. These are the kinds of partnerships that you appeared to struggle with during the PlayStation 3 days. What's changed?

I think a few things have changed. It certainly makes discussions with publishers easier when you have a significant installed base, and one that is fast growing, and one that is noticeably further ahead than the competition. I wouldn't say we have become the industry's default option, because there are other factors come into play, such as amounts of cash. But I would say we're starting to become the first thing a publisher thinks about when they consider partnerships.

The last Guardian re-reveal is one of Jim Ryan's E3 career highlights
The last Guardian re-reveal is one of Jim Ryan's E3 career highlights

Was getting to that position the hardest job for you? Because only a short while ago, Microsoft was the first thought for publishers, because of the success of the Xbox 360.

Well, I think the vast majority of people running third-party publishers are rational executives, who are very observant. They are making the right decisions for their business.

"It certainly makes discussions with publishers easier when you have an installed base that is fast growing, and noticeably further ahead than the competition."

Going back to the press conference, you must be relieved to finally announce The Last Guardian project on PS4.

[Laughs] Yes. Relieved. If only to stop you constantly asking me about it. I'm so happy just for that alone. You can't imagine how much of a relief it is.

Jim, when is The Last Guardian 2 coming out?

[Laughs]

Could you give us a bit more detail about what was happening to the project during that long period of silence?

Well, clearly, when a game has a gestation period as protracted as this one was, not all could have been well. If all had gone swimmingly the game would be out by now. So, it's fair to say that there were times when the publishing side of the business wondered if the game would ever happen. But the pedigree of the developer is such that we kept the faith.

I think that faith was justified by the reaction we got. When we showed the game on stage, I think it was one of my favourite moments in all the years I've been doing E3. It was wonderful.

I heard a rumour that Mark Cerny was called in to help the project. Is there any truth to that?

Well, as you know, I'm not closely involved in the development side of the business. But, y'know, Mark gets active in all sorts of areas of PlayStation.

Sony won't say when the FF7 exclusivity PS4 deal will expire
Sony won't say when the FF7 exclusivity PS4 deal will expire

Another big E3 reveal for you was the HD Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which was a huge crowd pleaser. How long does the timed exclusivity deal last?

We don't have anything to say about that at this point in time.

I understand. I remember when Microsoft announced the Rise of the Tomb Raider exclusivity deal, and Phil Spencer was engulfed by the press who were asking him how long the exclusivity lasted. I feel this issue deserves the same scrutiny.

Yes, but that whole thing was very ambiguous.

Yes, but this is ambiguous as well. No one knows how long Final Fantasy 7 is a timed exclusive for.

[PR spokesperson: "At this stage, we are announcing that it's coming to our platform. There's nothing else we can say, in terms of exclusivity."]

But that is ambiguous. People who want to buy this game don't know how long it will remain as a PlayStation 4 exclusive.

[PR spokesperson: "At this stage, we are just saying announcing the title, so it's very common, especially at this stage, to say it's coming and that it's coming to our platform.]

Ryan: What we're not doing is saying it's an outright exclusive, which I think is a subtle difference [compared] to what happened last year.

I'll move on. You also have a deal with Activision on getting Call of Duty exclusivity for add-on content, and some would say you need key third-party deals right now, because your first-party slate is looking a little thin.

Yes I'll admit it's not the strongest we've ever had. But if you look over the full year, we've had Bloodborne, we're getting Until Dawn, and Tearaway Unfolded. I think the latter will surprise many people, and we also have the Uncharted trilogy. So taking all that, and added with all the third-party games in the pipeline for this year, we're feeling confident.

Ryan insists that Sony is still backing PS Vita
Ryan insists that Sony is still backing PS Vita

Sony is in a unique position, because there's no flagship, must-have, first-party game for the system yet, but it's also remarkably popular. How does that make you feel?

Well, it certainly gives us some cause for optimism in 2016 [when Sony will ship major titles, such as Uncharted 4].

Certainly in the UK, it's still rather close [when compared to Xbox One sales], but we have been edging ahead every month. But across Europe, it's fair to say we're beating [Microsoft] by a considerable margin. Once you get into that position, the popularity of a console can start to become its selling point.

So when you look at what drives sales of a console, obviously exclusive games do help, but if you have 75 to 80 percent of the market, it makes the system easier to sell.

"We've had Bloodborne, we're getting Until Dawn, Tearaway Unfolded, and we also have the Uncharted trilogy. All that, and add in the third-party games in the pipeline for this year, and we're feeling confident."

I'd like to talk about PlayStation Vita too. Is it over for the system?

No, not at all. We're still selling respectable quantities. We have a hundred games in development, and you might say, "Well yeah but they're all indie games," but many of these games review very highly. Also the PS4's Remote Play feature is something that is valued a lot.

Sure. I'm not sure if the handheld market has long-term potential. I know you still support PlayStation Vita, and I know people who own it swear by it. But the handheld market has collapsed, has it not?

There's no disputing that it's not the size it used to be. It's a much smaller market than when the DS and PSP were in their glory days. But that market still does exist.

But is it still a profitable market, is what I wonder. Do you think that PS Vita will be Sony's last handheld?

You know, that would be a great headline for you there if I answered that, but I'm not going to give it to you [laughs].

you know what, FF VII remake SHOULD be a PS4 exclusive. and it has nothing to do with being a fanboy, or a fan or one over the other.

Final Fantasy WAS a Sony exclusive for YEARS. I think FFX was the first one on a Microsoft console. History has shown us that Microsoft gamers don't care about RPGs, and we already know that Microsoft doesn't care about JRPGs as evident by their recent "If you want JRPGs on Microsoft consoles....keep asking." article.

why waste time, money and resources for a system that couldn't care less about it? for gamers who couldn't care less about it?

It's not going to hurt Microsoft at all.....they couldn't care less. So why not be exclusive to Sony?

@Jdzspace: By that logic FF7 should go back to Nintendo after all these years, maybe they will announce an NX version next year?

Also, first FF game on the Xbox platform was FFXI, their MMO, first single player was FFXIII.

In all reality, any true fan of the game would want as many people as is possible to be able to experience what is often regarded as the best rpg ever.

@suicidesn0wman: First of all. Did you ever play FF7 ? You said you did but you just said "FF7 should go back to Nintendo ." It was never on Nintendo . After 6 Nintendo stopped caring about it. PlayStation made it theirs and more popular to those who were all " what a JRPG ?" with FF7.

@hard_serpent: You obviously know nothing of the history of FF7, FF7 was in development for the N64, but because of the limitations of the cartridge(15mb vs 700mb) and the cost to produce the cart vs cost of cd's, Square decided to leave Nintendo. They still had 6 games on NES & SNES, and several on the gameboy. Over the years Nintendo has had just as many games on their systems as Sony has, infact it is almost neck & neck if you leave out the renames like Final Fantasy Legends 1-3 and Adventure on the GB. I could be wrong but Nintendo has 13 Final Fantasy games and Sony has 14.

I would ask you the same question, and amend to it, how many FF games do you currently own? I've got 3 copies of just FF7(black label, misprint, greatest hits), and I have a copy of FF4 on like 5 different devices.

If anything, FF7 should go back to Nintendo because for Nintendo, FF7 is the one that got away.

@suicidesn0wman: I don't think it's regarded as the best rpg ever by anyone who has played more than 10 RPGs in their lifetime.

It's good, but it's not anywhere near the best. it was the first mainstream.

and like I said, i don't care if microsoft gets it. all i'm saying is that Microsoft as a company and their fans and supporters don't care about the game.

I don't have a problem with Nintendo getting the game, they brought Final Fantasy over here in the first place and has shown consistent support for the franchise with remakes and ports of old games. I have no problem with that at all.

just seems like a waste of resources to put the game a system that doesn't really care, or doesn't really want it in the first place.

@Jdzspace: Ok, I kinda see what you are trying to say, but you are wrong. I played the first Final Fantasy when it came out for the NES. I also played all the other Final Fantasy games that were released on Nintendo systems. I had to argue with my wife to get my first Sony system and I won the argument with Final Fantasy.

I have become an Xbox fan since then and own a One. My entire family is excited about 7 and I have friends that have Ones and they want it. To say that no one who plays on Microsoft products wants Final Fantasy or JRPGs in general is a broad statement. We care and we want it!

Any way, I hope you enjoy it when it comes out and I hope I get to play it soon as well.

Peace!

@R-Hunt: I'm not saying there aren't individuals who like RPGs who happen to have Microsoft consoles. It's just that they are in an extreme minority is all.

there is a reason Microsoft doesn't port over JRPGs, or even really have RPGs outside of Fable. the people who own the systems don't want it.

i'm glad you and gamers like you will get the chance to play it on your system of choice.

@Jdzspace: Well, I do hope it comes out on the One. If it doesn't I hope I can find something else on PS4 to ease the outlay of money. I wonder if Xbox RPG fans are the strong silent type? It would be interesting to do a poll and see how many fans there are.

@Jdzspace: You make too many assumptions about Xbox gamers in general. And yeah, I've played a lot of JRPGs, though not so much lately. My top 3 JRPGs are FF4, FF6 and Suikoden. FF7 is in the top 5 I'm sure, maybe throw Secret of Mana in to round out my top 5, can't think of the others that I truly enjoyed right now.

@suicidesn0wman: There is a reason Microsoft doesn't have any RPGs on it's system. It's not because they are complete idiots. It's because the people who use their system don't demand RPGs, which was the basic point of the "If you want JRPGs on Microsoft consoles, keep asking" article not that long ago.

he is basically saying, if enough of you wanted them, we will make it happen. But the vast majority of Microsoft gamers don't care or want them.

so it feels like a waste to port over FFVII , but i'm ok with it, it's not like it's my money

@cwv_rebirth: and to further illustrate my point.....FInal Fantasy Origins, or any number of the collections and HD remakes of the older games didn't make their way to Microsoft systems.

so why should this game be any different?

I have zero problem with it being a Sony exclusive OR a Sony/Nintendo exclusive, since as you said....it started on Nintendo/Super Famcom

@cwv_rebirth: who said anything about a betrayal? ......There is no betrayal here. LIke I said, every Final Fantasy since FFXIII has come out on Microsoft systems. So it's not new. It's not a big deal either way.

But at the same time, Microsoft doesn't care about the franchise or the fans of the games, so why waste time, money and resources porting the game to that system?

why give them something they don't really care about?

@Jdzspace: It's not like they're doing a favor to them or anything. Since the architecture of the PS4 and Xbox One are so similar, the effort it would take to develop for both would be insignificant. Sure, it will likely sell more on PS4 than it will on Xbox, but the benefits of that extra install base outweigh the cost.

@cwv_rebirth: I agree, like I said. I don't have a problem with them porting the game to Microsoft.

but at the same time, it's not hard to craft a case for why they shouldn't bother and put those extra resources they wouldn't used to port it to that system to either enhance the game further optimizing it, or putting it towards a different game.

that's all

PS Vita is a phenomenal handheld (specially the phat one with that beautiful screen). With a PS+ account, I was able to get the best of its game roster and I still get more games every month. In short, I'd say Vita is a godsend if you have been on PS+ since the beginning. Right now you won't have access to the best AAA games since they're not available on the service anymore. And that's a pity because many people won't buy a Vita for that reason.

I'll say it.

Final Fantasy 7 should remain exclusive to PS4. PC is fine but it should not even come to Xbox. And here's why.

FFVII is synonymous with PlayStation . It's why many bought their first PlayStation . Like many was my first PlayStation game and JRPG. It was the first PlayStation game and JRPG I beat. Fond memories ok.The people that were asking and hoping for the remake finally got the announcement its coming are more probably than not primarily PlayStation fans more than the rival brand . Final Fantasy does the best on PlayStation . Square Enix doesn't need to make it for multi platforms to turn a huge profit. Its not a Call of Duty or BF game . Its a JRPG . Its going to do best on PlayStation 4. Then there are the personal side of things. Things that wont matter to some but hopefully does to those that have a say can appreciate and hopefully do right by is.

Dont f*ck with my memories. If you are going to take a iconic PlayStation game and remake it for the PS4 and know , and you damn well know that is a big reason you know why you have such loyal fans to this day and dont make it exclusive like it originally was you, Sony would be losing. Letting such iconic PlayStation exclusives albeit 3rd party go to Xbox is not only embarrassing but disrespectful to your own fans. I mean for God's sake Square Enix is a Japanese company and So are you. Where is the comradeship at? Microsoft dont try to partner with you Sony. They always try to take you out. Quit bending over for them. F that. I dont care what anyone thinks but what the hell is wrong with you guys?

@hard_serpent:Here's the thing, if you play it on your PS4 why do you care how I play it? My first Final Fantasy memories are with Nintendo. As a matter of fact my first game experience was on a Pong console. All games should still be played on a black screen with white bars! How dare the game industry advance away from that? Sorry, i know that was a little extreme.

There is nothing personal in this arrangement. If it's exclusive, even if timed, Sony paid for it. Do I blame them? No, Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo all do it. This was a very strategic business move their part. Be happy you can play it the way you want and don't wish less for others.

Peace.

@hard_serpent: Thats fine and all but lets face it FF as a series is synonymous with Nintendo before anything else but that didn't stop it from jumping ship. Nothing embarrassing about it. Just business. Besides the game is being made first for PS4. Why are you so concerned with where else it plays on? That just means more money for the studio. I think you need to get our life priorities straitened out. Just a game and you get to play it first. that should be enough.

@rob9999991: I said clearly the Final Fantasy 7 is synonymous with PS. I clearly didn't say Final Fantasy the series is. I know that. Also you can bet if a Xbox exclusive like Halo ever comng to PlayStation that people would be outraged as well. And I am happy tobe getting the remake regardless but why make it for a crowd who didn't care for it back then and didn't clamor for it now? Dont give me that more profit crap be multi platform either. It would cost more to make on Xbox than the return they would get.

@hard_serpent: I had the same thought about Kingdom Hearts 3 going to Xbox One instead of just PS4. A lot of us consider KH to be synonymous with Playstation, not to mention no one who only played Xbox the last ten years will have never played KH anyway, but knowing how the industry is obsessed with cash grabs these days, it wouldn't surprise me if they made the KH HD collections on the Xbox, which would really devalue the KH brand for me.

@Arkhalipso: They both did pretty good, but I think Ms edged Sony this year simply with the bc, Halo 5 Christmas release and RotTR only on the X1 for this holiday season. Seems a lot of heavy hitters will be out Christmas 2016 for both MS and Sony. Christmas 2016 is going to be nuts and maybe the best Holiday season in a half decade, maybe more!

@rob9999991: MS definitely has the edge this year. Most PS titles are coming out next year, but I still think Sony is looking better in the overall run. The BC is pretty big though, not because of what it actually is, but because it seems that MS is listening and willing to please their customers. They seem to care about them now. I guess we'll see.

--last game i played on wiiU was MK8(i played it twice~borefest~i 100%ed the hell out of MKwii~so..??IDK its not my fault MKwas so dull)
--i spent a few dozen hrs(or maybe 20 hrs) in hyrule warriors
--pretty lackluster also

--my comparison was pointing to the fact that vita and wiiU have sold about the same amount of consoles units
--which is around 10 million each
--which is pretty sad
--so they make a sad little combo(hanging on to the bottom on the barrel)
--weekly still getting outsold by ps3 and 360(we wont compare ps4 and xb1~its just too sad)

@mesome713:
--wiiU is failing so hard
--because nintendo is COMPLETELY out of touch with what the modern home console gamer desires

@TheZeroPercent: Cool thing is Wii U is outselling Vita and PS4 combined in Japan. Wii U is for Nintendo fans, PS4 is for shooter fans.

@mesome713:
--ps4 sells an average of twice as many units in japan as wiiU does(wiiU sales are DISMAL)
--and wiiU is NOT outselling vita(they basically sell the same amount~but vita has a small edge)
--ps4 and xb1 are for hardcore consoles gamers
--and nintendo quit making and 'real' wiiU games last year(with a tally of 2 'real' AAA wiiU games for the whole of 2014)

I would buy a PS4 just to play the Final Fantasy 7 remake alone.
