Now Playing: GS News Update: Xbox Play Anywhere Program, Gears of War 4, and Xbox One S Revealed

Microsoft's push to unite its Xbox One and PC audiences won't impact Sony's plans, according to Sony Interactive Entertainment president Andrew House.

During Sony's investor relations event House was asked whether Microsoft's new unification strategy was being perceived as a threat, and if PlayStation would do anything to counter it.

"I always hesitate to be drawn into discussions of someone else's strategy," he said. "I'm more than happy to talk about our own strategy. Yes, there was a big emphasis from the folks at Microsoft on Xbox and PC cross-play. It remains to be seen wether there is latent large consumer demand for that.

"But we don't see it as really effecting or prompting any change in our thought process and strategy," he continued. "We've always tended to believe that a proprietary ecosystem offering a very well crafted, unified client experience is the way to go, and that sort of remains our strategy."

One of the ways Microsoft's vision of bringing together PC and Xbox One players has manifested is cross-platform multiplayer for Rocket League. Microsoft has invited Sony to also connect its audience. Sony hasn't shown much interest in doing so.

Another way Microsoft is bringing together the Xbox and PC audiences is through Xbox Play Anywhere, which allows games to be purchased once and then played across both platforms at no extra cost. You can see the list of upcoming games that support Xbox Play Anywhere by clicking here.

Of course, the cross-pollination of audiences is also enabled by the inclusion of an Xbox app in Windows 10. The next major update for Microsoft's operating system will have "key gaming features," according to Xbox engineering lead Mike Ybarra. Among these are the ability for all Xbox Ones to act as development kits, as well as background music and support for the Siri-like Cortana digital assistant. Read more about the update here.

Sony will have to follow, or be left. I own Both Sony / Microsoft consoles and play on the Microsoft one just because of the easy of use with Xbox Live on the PC, Voice Chat, DVR etc. My PS4 little fan drives me crazy just playing any game, The menu is a nightmare. Easy of use go a long way, and yes even for a game console, Plus my PS4 controllers don't hold up has much as the Xbox Ones.

Both consoles do have pay for access to play online yes, But Sony started the free games but Microsoft is doing so much better with games for gold. Was mad when my PS Plus went out i lost all my games tell i got Plus again so dumb, And the dumb indie games they give every month where all crap.

Sony has very little incentive to do this. They have the larger install base on console and they have no store on Windows. Microsoft has all the reason to do this. They have the smaller install base so they want to grow it by joining it with PC, they want to get people to use the Windows Store in Win10 and they want to look like the good guy.

Everywhere you said "PC" in that article, you should have just said "Windows 10", because that's the unification strategy.

Xbox and Windows 10 platforms, Xbox and Windows 10 storefronts, Xbox Live services.

If Microsoft was just heroically jumping into support of all PC platforms and services and storefronts (and previous OSs) in a unification strategy, that might be interesting. But it's decidedly not that; it's a strategy to expand the walled garden of UWP, Windows 10 store, and associated Xbox Live services.

The almighty MAU (Monthly Average Users) is all that matters to MS, not what particular box you're using with Windows installed (Desktops, Laptops, Hybrids, Tablets, Phones, Surface, Xbox, etc.).

@runstalker: It would still be nice to cross-play with friends on PC or X1. I had a great go cross-playing Portal 2 with a friend on PC, so there's that. Not for competitive multiplayer, but co-ops, especially in RPGs and such.

But I do understand that MS has advantage here, both Xbox and Windows gaming being under their roof to start with. Sony's connection to PC gaming is pretty much non-existent. They don't make PC hardware, OS, nor do they have PC app store.

Plus, they are in that sweet "top of the world" spot that, frankly, is less motivating for company to try harder. If Xbox starts catching up, then maybe. Maybe.

I'd gladly forego cross-play between PC and console if it means I don't have to have Windows 10 shoved down my throat. F that noise.

Surprised? They said backwards compatibility wasn't possible then flooded the PS4 with remasters and PS Now. The only reason it wasn't possible was because greed won out over customer service after they realized they were going to be number one and didn't have to go the route MS did after Don Mattrick ruined them.

Avatar image for kelseyjb

@VAJoiner: the cell processor was just to difficult and costly to do backward compatibility on the PS4 do research. I'm not crazy about it because i never get rid of my old consoles.

@VAJoiner: I have full BC its called a $75.00 PS3 console that can be gotten now. For those who traded up when PS4 launched and got over $100.00 dollars its called a profit when they buy back.

This would expose the premium subscription fee for online multiplayer for what it really is. Why do PC gamers get to online for free with console gamers who have to have a premium subscription for buying games on their consoles? My guess is console gamers are being deceived. On that note, I will have to give MS credit for having guts to send this signal by letting PC gamers play with XBO gamers without PC gamers needing to pay a fee as it is the first step towards correcting the mistake they made since the original XBox.

Avatar image for deactivated-5b63f02158cce

@Jinzo_111887: $60 a year is nothing for the support of Xbox Live, Better then dealing with bad game companies anyday.

Avatar image for Ravenlore_basic
Ravenlore_basic

@Jinzo_111887: Give it time. Microsoft will find a way to charge people to play online on PC. And Microsoft followers will defend Microsoft. saying hey the game is free, $60.00 a year is very little to pay to play.

Avatar image for nikon133
nikon133

@Ravenlore_basic: I'm sure that can (and would not mind) - after all, all they have to do is introduce obligatory XBL account for PC gamers wanting to play MS games online.

However. Since Steam, EA, UPlay... don't charge for on-line (beside being able to rent your own server for some games), that would be hard pill to swallow. Additionally, XBL is in charge of all the Xbox games' online. On a PC, it would apply only to those few distributed by MS, like Forza etc. Much more questionable value than with console(s).

So... no, I don't really expect that we will see paid online for MS PC games any time soon.

@lonesamurai1: Sony has an ecosystem with games being cross-play/cross-buy across PS4, PS3 and Vita.

Or... they had an ecosystem. PS3 is no longer relevant and they've all but completely abandoned Vita.

I think it would be cool if Sony followed suit and had it where all there games were both available on Windows and PlayStation and you could purchase either version and get the other for free. That way you would be able to pick and choose which platform you wanted to play on but didn't have to be worried about missing out on games Although I admit I'm not even sure if Sony could do something like this because with Microsoft Windows is their OS but as far as Sony as concerned I really have no clue what the logistics of doi g this would be. I'm assuming they would have to partner with Microsoft is some capacity to get something like that going which I think is definitely a no go. Either way it's a nice thought to think about.

Avatar image for kelseyjb

@Marky360: That's not good for them from a buisness perspective.

@kelseyjb:

Well I just thought the way I understand the console business to work both Sony and Microsoft make more money off the games they make and the servieces like PSN and Xboxlive then the consoles themselves that's why they are able to sell the systems at a loss most of the time. So I figured if Sony could extend their reach by putting their games up for sale on Windows as well as on PlayStation they could potentially make a much greater profit. This is just a thought I don't know this for a fact I just assumed this would be a good move for them and why Microsoft was doing it.

Avatar image for yadsar

@Marky360: Why would Sony want to shoot themselves and do the same thing that MS is doing. I'm not a PC gamer but if I was I would buy a game on the PC before i even buy one on the Xbox one. It's so much better on the pc. MS is screwing all Xbox one owners by doing this because they are simply telling them that the PC will be better so why bother with the Xbox one version. There was a rumor once about Bloodborne coming to the PC but Sony said NOW WAY which was very smart of them. I think is a bad idea unless you have a portable to take and continue your games on like the PS vita.

Avatar image for Marky360

@yadsar:

WTF? How is cross platform play between Xbox and Windows 10 screwing Xbox gamers what you say makes no damn sense at all. I play on both Xbox and PlayStation and I sure as **** don't feel screwed over knowing that now whenever I buy an Xbox exclusive I get 2 versions of the game one on my Xbox and One on Windows 10 I mean seriously how the **** is that a bad thing I get more ppl to play games with AND if I ever buy a PC that is capable of playing games I already have a whole bunch of them to play FOR FREE! Your whole comment makes no sense you say that having the games available on PC makes the Xbox irrelevant but what kind of sense does it make for me to sell my Xbox and then run out and buy a PC which would cost 3X as much as the Xbox did just to play the same games I already could play? This would only make the Xbox irrelevant for those that don't already have one and do have a good enough Windows 10 PC which like I already said just gives me more ppl to play games with online whether they are on an Xbox or a PC. What you said made absolutely no sense I mean Sony USED to do the samething with PlayStation they HAD a cross buy feature where you could buy a PS3 game and it would come with a digital code for a free PS Vita copy was that stupid too? "Oh why would I want to play the stupid Vita when I can just play it on the PS3" See how dumb that sounds?

Avatar image for xbhonner

@Marky360:

are u crazy? Windows and exbox are micro$ofts product, thats the reason why m$ start to sell the same games for both. Why would Sony release all of their games for their competitor??? Unless sony have their own OS for computer, thats possible.

micro$oft basically is just copied sony's cross buy feature. Some games on ps4, and ps vita are Cross Buy. M$ is just As unoriginal as before

@xbhonner: It's clear to anyone in these comments that you're either a PS fanboy or at the very least an XBOX hater.

Your grammar is horrendous.

Your arguments about copy-cat tactics by XBOX is retarded. You think Sony has been any more inventive than XBOX over the years? You're delusional.

I'm a PC gamer, don't own an XBOX and will probably never buy one. I'll probably be getting a NEO and an NX so just know there is no bias here other than wanting the best gaming experiences available with the widest variety to pick from. That and my continual quest to battle fanboys who can't have a logical conversation without replacing "S" with "$" or be somewhat objective.

PSA: Your comments are painful to read btw.

BILL GATE$ (or B$ as I like to call him) is responsible for child labour in the poor countries of the world, where children are kidnapped & forced to work in fields without food, shelter, or pay! They work them `till death! When asked on Reddit why does he have stock in this company, he never answered. They're all morbidly obese piggies rolling in money mud & gold.

Google it!

Then Google MON$ANTO....makers of "Franken-food" or "lab food" I'm Constantly posting against them on Twitter & Facebook!

You just got hit with REAL logic by someone who LOVES to use the $$$ for truly evil corporation$ because it is OBSCENELY appropriate!

You're the one who shouldn't be takin' seriously, because you're so delusional you don't know crap from sh*t! And you're welcome.

I'm simply saying that calling out MS for being unimaginative and propping up Sony is hypocritical at best and asinine at worst.

You don't really deserve a reply since you can't stay on subject but I enjoy watching your kind get worked up on the internet. Keep up the good fight against big bad Bill Gates who's donated the majority of his fortune to charity, disease research, and countless philanthropic organizations, you jackass.

I never said I was offended, just that it makes you look foolish. Just like if I always referred to Sony as $ony it would make people think I was a raving fanboy instead of someone that is able to objectively look at a situation and determine the pros and cons without being blinded by my belief that one piece of plastic is drastically inferior to another piece of plastic.
