Sony Could Buy Warframe, Gears Tactics Parent Company
Sony could be looking to acquire additional studios as it approaches the PS5 generation.
Sony is reportedly considering a bid on the parent company of Gears Tactics and Warframe developers Digital Extremes and Splash Damage. The company is said to be scouting the idea of an offer for Leyou Technologies Holdings Ltd.
Bloomberg reports that Leyou is seeking a buyer as soon as this month, and that Sony is hoping that it can win the bidding war with more solid financing than its competitors. This is being helmed by Sony Corp. itself, not the PlayStation division in particular, but the report notes that executive officer Kenichiro Yoshida is looking to strengthen the company's offerings including adding value for the upcoming PS5 launch.
Another Leyou subsidiary, Athlon Games, is currently working on a Lord of the Rings MMO with Amazon Games.
Sony is planning to launch its next-gen platform, the PlayStation 5, sometime this fall. It will be going head-to-head against Microsoft's Xbox Series X. Sony recently showed off an impressive slate of PS5 games, but Microsoft has been acquiring several studios in the last few years so it will likely have some of its own first-party games to show at an event later this month.
