Sony confirms 250GB PS3 for UK, announces PSP Go Rewards

£284.99 250GB PS3 coming Oct. 1 in various bundles; PSP owners who upgrade to UMD-free system will receive three free games to download.

At the opening of the 2009 Tokyo Game Show today, Sony announced that sales of its PlayStation 3 Slim had surpassed the 1-million-unit mark in three weeks.

Time to get bundled up.
Time to get bundled up.

Following the news, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe announced yet another variation on the console. As had been widely rumoured, it will ship with a 250GB hard drive and will launch in the UK for £284.99 ($462) on October 1 via a handful of hardware bundles. This compares to the recommended retail price of £249.99 ($405) for a standard 120GB PS3 Slim.

At first, buyers can choose to take two titles from the Platinum range of best-sellers (called Greatest Hits in the US) or Sony's recent open-world action game Infamous. On October 16, an Uncharted 2 bundle will also become available, and on October 19, a final Blu-ray movie pack will be released containing X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Dark Knight, and Sony's official Blu-ray Remote. Apparently this last configuration was the "movie bundle" that had been rumoured, but it does not include the PlayTV DVR option which had been speculated about.

Sony UK also announced its long-awaited scheme to reward current PSP owners upgrading to the PSP Go. Unfortunately, owners of vast UMD libraries hoping to get digital copies of their games on the UMD-drive-less PSP Go may be disappointed. The PSP Go Rewards programme will allow owners of a PSP-1000, 2000, or 3000 and at least one UMD to download three free games when they buy a PSP Go. In the UK, there will be 17 titles available, including Killzone: Liberation, SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo 3, Wipeout Pure, and Everybody's Golf.

PSP Go Rewards will launch alongside the console on October 1 and will run until March 31, 2010. The scheme works by having users sign up to the PlayStation Network with both their old PSP and the new PSP Go they have purchased. Once players have applied to the PSP Go Rewards programme with a UMD in the drive of the older model, a voucher is e-mailed to claim the three free downloadable games for the PSP Go.

At press time, both the 250GB PS3 and the Rewards programme were confirmed only for the UK, and Sony Computer Entertainment America had not responded to requests for comment regarding a North American release.

The full list of titles available in the PSP Go Rewards programme is as follows:
Killzone Liberation
MediEvil
Wipeout Pure
Buzz!: Brain Bender
Buzz!: Master Quiz
SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo
Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters
Everybody's Golf (Hot Shots Golf in the US)
Resistance: Retribution
Syphon Filter Dark Mirror
Lemmings
LocoRoco
Patapon
Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow
Echochrome
Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice
Daxter

Yeah, see this is what I've been saying all along. Sony is trying to abolish the used game market. I see through the crap, and I'm not falling for it. Unless there's a way I can buy a UMD and get it on to my Go for free, sorry. 3000 for me.

I'm a little peeved over the lack of support for games. These are the same games that have been on the Playstation Network for the past year or two. In many cases the games also cost twice as much as buying them in UMD form at a Gamestop. I think I'm gonna take a wait and see approach, and hold onto my PSP-2000 for now. For a system being released in about a week, there's too many questions with software support.

@df-1 The majority don't buy umd games, they download them for free. Sony has to go this way or the psp is dead.

if sony would start marketing UC2:AT more that game would be their killer app and this bundle would sell A LOT of ps3s, but this is Sony and they are the laziest at marketing, this game is killer, just from the betas, i can say it is a blast online and from all the reviews, it will definitely be a blast in the SP component but we all know Sony will not market this thing aggressively :(

@sthbytesn The collectors edition of the Xbox 360 which comes with 250gb is $400 because I pre-ordered 1.I'm just saying giving Sony's history this new PS 3 might cost more then the Xbox 360 250gb model. Now to nerds running around screaming update your drive it's cheaper well not everyone has the knowledge to upgrade a PS 3.

I don't see many people doing the PSP Go rewards for 1 simple reason. People who have the PSP1000-3000 have bought games.. games that are in UMD discs.. you cant play all the games you bought with the PSP go because it has no UMD drive!

Be nice if sony released a totally striped down version of the ps3 that just plays games and nothing else and maybe retailed it for $150, for the simple reason that it would get the game market going again and get the designers to focus a bit more on PS3

120gb is more then enough space Dragdar* , you could get an hdmi cord and game for the price of a 250gb unit bundled with a game. The hdmi cord is very necessary.

@TheMistique dude... you can't call it a laptop hard drive... it's an SATA hard drive... the size of the ps3 one is 2.5" that's the only difference

@TheMistique... actually the HDD you found is a 3.5", which is not a laptop HDD. The Western Digital that Havoc0120 linked is a 2.5", which is a laptop HDD. Just sayin'. This sounds like pretty good news to me. If I didn't already have a 80GB BC PS3 then I would definitely get one of these bundles. This holiday season is going to be neck and neck and neck with all the price cuts and special bundles available... that's an epic win for every gamer.

@sthbytesN Actually, they are talking about British Pounds. They don't use Euros in the UK. EVERYTHING is more expensive there in comparison to our currency (speaking of both Canada and US), but they also make a lot more money than we do so it balances out.

I'm an American, and I've come to notice that everything seems to cost more in terms of video games and consoles in other countries. Why is this? Because the new PS3 slim is nowhere near that expensive here.

I'm going to pick up a PS3 soon depending on the bundle. I haven't decided it I'll get the 250 or the 120. The 120 is at such a good price, that I may go with that.

If they offer the PSP program here I might consider actually getting one. We will see though, as $250 is wayyy too much for that.

The PsP Go is such a terrible idea for people who already own a PsP. Why would you buy another when you can't play your UMD's on it? Love the PS3 bundle though. I really think Sony should have developed the PS3 for an extra year or so. It seems like they are just ironing the kinks out now and it has cost them a pretty penny in production fees.

Lousy "rewards" program. Love the PS3Slim, but this is an insult to the money I've poured into my 2 PSP's and the (literally, sadly) hundreds of UMD Games I've bought (all legit, collector *sigh*)........3 free games? That's pathetic. I'm not remotely interested. The games now cost Sony nothing, they're completed games simply converted into downloads, you goddamn cheapstakes, Sony.

Save $50.. Buy the PS3 Slim at $299, then get a Western Digital 250GB from NewEgg for ~$50 Or choose from any of these 1TB HDD's from $70-100 and have more storage. NewEgg isn't the only place that offers HDD's at these low prices, but the point is that you can save yourself money or get more hard drive space for the same money if storage is your only reason for buying the 250GB package. _

The price for the 250GB Slim seems about right in the UK. Some places sell 120GB models for £230, a cheap 250GB 2.5" HDD is about £35, plus Platinums go for £10-£20 each. Not a bad deal, I'll probably get mine with Uncharted 2 when it's out.

@Bashers79 No adding a 3rd party HDD doesn't affect warranty at all. The extra $$$ is worth the 250GB, and don't forget the sweet paint job on the FFXIII bundle.... if you can get it. << LINK REMOVED >>

Seriously, if they announce this rumor that PS2 games will be downloadable the PS3 is going to be kickin' some serious butt into the future! I've already got a 500GB drive in my PS3 so the 250GB doesn't excite me. I'm actually more excited about the reality that Sony shows you how to replace your drive. That's pretty cool.

I'm looking to buy a PS3, is it worth paying the extra £35 quid to get the 250GB version? 35 notes doesn't seem much for an extra 130GB of harddrive space. also, does adding a third party hard drive effect your warranty?

psp rewards is rubbish. a lot of people will have traded in their old psp to get the new one, but they cant get the 3 games (not exactly generous) without having another psp. the list of games is generic, and small. no rpg's. no purchase.
