Sony Closing All Its Stores in Canada

Sony will sell and support its products through authorized retailers.

Sony is shutting down all its stores in Canada, the company has announced.

Sony confirmed the news to the CBC News, saying that it will close all its stores in the next six to eight weeks, and that it will redirect all of its business through its national network of Sony retailers, its online stores, and the "Sony-trained Telesales team," which handle sales by phone.

“Our network of Sony authorized retailers offer a full range of Sony products and will be supported by our in-store Merchandisers and Product Trainers on an ongoing basis in order to ensure that our past customers have continued access to knowledgeable Sales consultants who can support their ongoing Sony electronics needs,“ the company said in a statement.

Sony announced the news on the same day that Target announced its shutting down all its stores in Canada as well, two years and more than $1 billion after it first opened in the country. Target said it was "unable to find a realistic scenario that would get Target Canada to profitability until at least 2021."

The PlayStation 4 was the most sold console of 2014 in the US and globally, selling 18.5 million units in the 14 months since its launch, but Sony has had issues with its other divisions. In February 2014 it announced that it's selling off its VAIO PC brand and restructuring its TV business.

This is sad to hear and especially the employees. This news came when Target was doing the same thing.

Our dollar is dropping with the price of a barrel of oil. It's our biggest export.

Sony has been losing billions since 2006. This quarter they said they will lose another 1.2 billion. So closing all their stores in canada is no surprise.Sony's biggest investor just pulled their stock out they said sony was a sinking ship this is just more proof.I said they would be bankrupt by end of 2015.Even though i can't stand sony fanboys i hate to see anyone lose their jobs we all have family's and bills to pay

<< LINK REMOVED >> yea i love how you think you have become some economist overnight, but i can ensure you dont have the foggiest idea about what your are talking about. SONY has a hell of alot of assets, its highly unlikely the company would go down within a year. its closer to ten years before that become the final option in which case the playstation brand would just simply be bought by a major company who are looking at console gaming.

befor you say "fanboy" let me point out that i have all the consoles, and work off common sense and logic.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> no they have a lot of assets, but thats the last resort a company would ever go to anyway. they have a hand in many other things that could easily be sold off befor the SONY would go under. its ludicrous to think that there a year away from closing they have years and years till it hits critical.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Sony is streamlining it's operations being they are losing a lot of money on divisions that was once fruitful. When you have divisions losing money and one division that is making profit which is the PS4 the profits from that one division cannot possibly hold up all the other failing divisions and why sink money into them. So Sony is shutting them down which they need to do if they want to thrive.

Before this, I had not idea that they had their own stores. I doubt that their stores were really profitable in the first place when you compare it to giant retailers, therefore they are simply trying to maximize profits and cutting their losses where they can, any company would do so. It's not exactly a sign of disparity in profits as many are suggesting.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Strange... your in a gaming forum and did not add Ubisoft to your "all I can think of" ? Thou the headquarters is in France but about 85% developing AAA games comes from Canada itself.

Also add extreme cold temperature too... celsius...

and add Elisha Cuthbert, Ryan Reynolds and hate it or love it Ellen Page !

Darn boy..you are missing a HUGE pile of "knowing Canada" !

The economy collapsed with the closing of industrial factories. There is no factual information supporting your blatant racism.

@bubba_1988 Corruption and an infinitesimal tax base are what is crippling Detroit now. The auto industry adopted a policy of "planned obsolescence" a long time ago. A weird idea where they thought people liked buying new cars every five years, so why build them to last longer than they had to? For some reason, "the big three" couldn't figure out why the bulk of their market started buying Toyotas and Hondas. The car companies started failing, the production jobs left, the blue collar workers left and the housing market collapsed. As long as the city officials could keep their pockets stuffed they didn't have to do anything to stop what was happening.

This is why I no longer buy trucks past the year 1999. It's a lot easier, and cheaper for me to repair old ones, than buy a new one every time the warranty wears off.
