Sony Closing All Its Stores in Canada

Sony will sell and support its products through authorized retailers.

Sony is shutting down all its stores in Canada, the company has announced.

Sony confirmed the news to the CBC News, saying that it will close all its stores in the next six to eight weeks, and that it will redirect all of its business through its national network of Sony retailers, its online stores, and the "Sony-trained Telesales team," which handle sales by phone.

“Our network of Sony authorized retailers offer a full range of Sony products and will be supported by our in-store Merchandisers and Product Trainers on an ongoing basis in order to ensure that our past customers have continued access to knowledgeable Sales consultants who can support their ongoing Sony electronics needs,“ the company said in a statement.

Sony announced the news on the same day that Target announced its shutting down all its stores in Canada as well, two years and more than $1 billion after it first opened in the country. Target said it was "unable to find a realistic scenario that would get Target Canada to profitability until at least 2021."

The PlayStation 4 was the most sold console of 2014 in the US and globally, selling 18.5 million units in the 14 months since its launch, but Sony has had issues with its other divisions. In February 2014 it announced that it's selling off its VAIO PC brand and restructuring its TV business.

Well if their tv and smart phone(I doubt the smart phone division will be sold) division gets sold, I'd say they should sell their tablet divison as well and keep making everything else

37 years in this country and visited Sony's store twice, maybe 3 times. It gives you an idea on how much we give a flying F****k

Meh really no point in those stores since PS4 sells like hotcakes pretty much everywhere. Target closing out there is kind of a surprise.

It amazes me Walmart has customers who buy videogames. Their selection is crap, never properly discounted, and their bargain bins are simply a messy mess. I know it's trendy to hate on EB or Gamestop. But their pricing is at least fair with very good bargain bins.

I honestly don't like hotcakes (assuming we're talking about pancakes). Too doughy and that thick syrup bugs me.

Yuck!

Whenever I passed the sony store where I live I was always confused. It's a small store in a huge mall and you could get their products for the same price just a couple of stores away. Even if they where doing amazing financially I still think it's a waste of resources. Plus it doesn't seem like too many people will be affected I read in the newspaper a couple days ago that only 90 people will be laid off. As for Target closing down, it's their on fault the store is always half empty and when you go into the game section most of their stock is sold out, it's been like that in multiple Targets since it came here. Sadly thousands are going to be laid off.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I completely agree, Target just couldn't carry enough product up here to fill their stores. There would be whole isles with like 2 brands of paper towel to fill the shelves. They expected to make money within 2 years as well and we all knew that was not going to happen. Give it time...Zellers WIL be back ;)

This is why I'm glad I don't have ps4 yet. How much longer will Sony be around, I've been getting into digitally owning games so what happens to those games if Sony dies

The PS4 division is profitable. So buying yourself a PS4 has nothing to do with the rest of Sony

<< LINK REMOVED >> i would not be worried in the slightest, they have years till they will start to be forced to sell off any of the profitable divisions and even so sony has a hand in a lot more then just consoles and video games they have game licenses, studies and stock in other companies to sell off. the playstation brand is likly to be around for easily 10+ years before anything will happen.

<< LINK REMOVED >> If it does ever happen, although I highly doubt anytime soon, then they'll probably move over as a third party publisher. Support for the PS3 would probably vanish before that also (unless you have a Vita i guess), if it happens.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Some experts expect them to be back to making money in 5 years, they have enough assets to keep them going at least a couple of decades so your worries are misplaced and even if Sony does vanish PS won't and defo not in the PS4s lifetime.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Stores closing is no biggie, I mean high streets the world over are closing because of the internet simply. It all come down to them cutting to get back into constantly making profits which they are doing. Look at a company like BP in the UK, cutting jobs and selling off buildings yet they are making billions.

They are selling and streamlining the struggling parts. It is predicted they will be making profits consistently within 5 years the way they are going, no expert or numbers point to their collapse for at least a few decades. So you should worry...if you worry decades in advanced.
