Sony Closing All Its Stores in Canada

Sony will sell and support its products through authorized retailers.

Sony is shutting down all its stores in Canada, the company has announced.

Sony confirmed the news to the CBC News, saying that it will close all its stores in the next six to eight weeks, and that it will redirect all of its business through its national network of Sony retailers, its online stores, and the "Sony-trained Telesales team," which handle sales by phone.

“Our network of Sony authorized retailers offer a full range of Sony products and will be supported by our in-store Merchandisers and Product Trainers on an ongoing basis in order to ensure that our past customers have continued access to knowledgeable Sales consultants who can support their ongoing Sony electronics needs,“ the company said in a statement.

Sony announced the news on the same day that Target announced its shutting down all its stores in Canada as well, two years and more than $1 billion after it first opened in the country. Target said it was "unable to find a realistic scenario that would get Target Canada to profitability until at least 2021."

The PlayStation 4 was the most sold console of 2014 in the US and globally, selling 18.5 million units in the 14 months since its launch, but Sony has had issues with its other divisions. In February 2014 it announced that it's selling off its VAIO PC brand and restructuring its TV business.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I didn't even understand why they opened so many branded stores, or any branded stores. I get it that some brands want to follow apple's business tactics, but apple often does things that only work for them.

It's ashame how Xbox fanboys see this as gloom and doom for Sony. Hoping Sony fail but don't realize that the Playstation division won't die lol. The Xbox Division only exist solely because shareholders allow it to for now. We all know how mediocre the Xbox One hardware and gaming software sales have been compare to the Playstation 4 sales.

Oh god I can already hear any army of folks marching and using this as absolute proof that Sony is going out of business. Like most of these old, huge companies Sony has saturated itself with too many products across too many divisions and market segments. These branded stores don't work these days since we can buy whatever we want, whenever we want, and wherever we want when it comes to consumer goods. The issue Sony is having is that they've just got too much stuff. Some streamlining and a more "back to basics" approach will turn them around right quick. No company in existence needs to have like 100+ models of televisions. Sony used to mean quality and the premium price tag reflected that. But other companies over time, naturally, have crept up and provided the same products of the same (or better) quality at lower prices. Sony will shed off what is no longer profitable and be fine in the end...they're not going anywhere and neither is Microsoft. All of us gamers will be fine...trust me.

I broke this story in the comments several days ago! And in the same comment I mentioned Target too :)

Seriously though, as I commented then the news I saw on TV said there are 14 to be closed, the one in my area closed years ago. Normally I would never shop there or the online store, but I did get my PS4 from their online store because I had a lot of Sony points. However, the only reason I had a lot (and I do again now actually) is because Sony used to frequently run credit card promos. You simply sign up for a Sony MBNA MasterCard and make a few purchases of any amount, even like $1, you'd get a lot of $50-$100 worth of points. The best part was they didn't care if you already had a Sony CC, you could just get a second or third, at one point I had 3 :). Technically you could spend them at any Sony authorized reseller, and they'd later credit your card back, but it was a process and it took a long time and I never trusted it, so I just use the points directly on Sony's site where it deducts them from your price automatically.

Good move. They're on the right track. Now if they will just drop all of their products except for PlayStation they'll be doing wonderful.

Exactly we have no Circuit City in the US, you have no Targets now. Companies stick to where the money is, so one gets it. Unlike these Xbox fanboys they see Sony in an article. They start taking shots because of the PS4 success over the Xbox One.

<----Die hard Sony fan, but even I think Sony stores were a stupid idea (just like Microsoft stores). You can buy any of their products on Amazon, and cheaper.

<< LINK REMOVED >> That's a better for them as they don't pay anything as Samsung does. Its smart move by them to save money and so many other companies will do the same. They don't need any retail store to pay rent, labourer. electricity, and so on.

I can't believe Sony had so many varied products to warrant a store, much less a bunch of stores. Sony is smart to close the stores, but they should have done it years ago, along with cutting TV and Computers and Phones. Focus on the insurance and banking. That is where their money has been at for a while now. Without them Sony would be in serious trouble.

<< LINK REMOVED >> lol I was about to say. You could never find one. Their fault though. Yes, you could find any Sony product at their store, including some rare games, but you could do the same at GameStop, and Sony never had any good sales (like Target). Canadians are a shrewd bunch.

Doubtful on boxed goods - it'll be floor demo units. I can't see them losing any money on relative electronics or software when they can just send them to their nearest DC for resale.

Target was stoopid thinking they could come to Canada and charge more for less. Walmart was kicking their ass without even trying.

Closing down Sony stores is a smart idea. Why even have those stores when all the other big box stores carry your products, and often in the same mall? Company specific stores are more about beeting your chest like a gorilla than making the company profitable.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Like another news article said, Target came into Canada "flying blind", they thought Canada's market works the same way the American market does, Canadians are not the kind to buy junk at premium prices.

Plus their inventory is horrible.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I'm shocked Americans shop there myself, and I'm American! I think Target is so successful here because Wal-Mart attracts...um...a different group of people. Target shoppers in the states go there and pay the outrageous prices to avoid the..."crowds"...at Wal-Mart I think. I don't shop at either. I have my little Dollar Tree down the road from my house that's got almost everything I need and the store has nice kids working there that keep the place well stocked, cleaned, and organized.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I would have loved Target if they had what we didn't have - a variety in products. But it was the same old thing we could get elsewhere, and cheaper.

It would be difficult though, since everything already is expensive here and they had to try and make money, I just think they could have had they offered product you cannot get in Canada.
