Sony Closing All Its Stores in Canada

Sony will sell and support its products through authorized retailers.

Sony is shutting down all its stores in Canada, the company has announced.

Sony confirmed the news to the CBC News, saying that it will close all its stores in the next six to eight weeks, and that it will redirect all of its business through its national network of Sony retailers, its online stores, and the "Sony-trained Telesales team," which handle sales by phone.

“Our network of Sony authorized retailers offer a full range of Sony products and will be supported by our in-store Merchandisers and Product Trainers on an ongoing basis in order to ensure that our past customers have continued access to knowledgeable Sales consultants who can support their ongoing Sony electronics needs,“ the company said in a statement.

Sony announced the news on the same day that Target announced its shutting down all its stores in Canada as well, two years and more than $1 billion after it first opened in the country. Target said it was "unable to find a realistic scenario that would get Target Canada to profitability until at least 2021."

The PlayStation 4 was the most sold console of 2014 in the US and globally, selling 18.5 million units in the 14 months since its launch, but Sony has had issues with its other divisions. In February 2014 it announced that it's selling off its VAIO PC brand and restructuring its TV business.

Seriously I hope everything is going ok in Canada. I'm American and our news doesn't knwo other countries exist so I'm pretty ignorant on the subject. What effects them effects us and vice versus. I hate to see anybody losing their jobs in this day and age of the new world order.

Good thing Sony is looking to save where they can and are prepping for the future. Target couldn't even expect a profit and they're offering goods that cater to more people. Feel bad for the people who were employed in those stores though.

Retail will always be around. I'm not sure of the wages earned in Canada or at Canadian retail, but many of those employed probably won't have too many issues. It's the same from a Sony store to a target store to a GameStop store, you sell goods, stock shelves and provide customer support.

The difference between the U.S. and other countries is that our gov't lets companies create monopolies, even though we say it's illegal. Walmart is a prime example, I think Sony and target wanted to create situations where they could control the cost of items to beat out other local retailers. I wonder if there are Walmarts in Canada?

There are some things that Walmart is good for, certain electronic purchases and such. Nonparishable food items and the like. Do not buy produce and do not buy clothing there, it may be cheap but you get what you paid for and cheap is cheap. Kohls and the like are your best bet for clothing as the selections are usually better, Burlington Coat is good too. What Walmart does is price matching, if you can find a good product that is lower than your local Walmart, like say you find an ad selling a new game item for 80% normal retail but Walmart has it at 90%, you bring that ad and hey will price match. The add and item must be legit though, if anyone remembers the eBay article about the 50$ PS4 from a couple months ago. I may be wrong on some stuff here, but retail will always be around in some form or another.

Sony is broke and cant afford to ship there products to a canadian store so just sticks them all in a warehouse instead. besides it really is pointless having a store when you got nothing to sell there as its all being sold off. Theyll have the PS4, 3 phones, 2 4K TV's no one can afford and a $1200 MP3 player that will sell 1 unit per month. Dont need a store to show off 6 items!!!

It seems that Sony's stores will close in emergent markets too, like Brazil.
