Sony Closing All Its Stores in Canada

Sony will sell and support its products through authorized retailers.

Sony is shutting down all its stores in Canada, the company has announced.

Sony confirmed the news to the CBC News, saying that it will close all its stores in the next six to eight weeks, and that it will redirect all of its business through its national network of Sony retailers, its online stores, and the "Sony-trained Telesales team," which handle sales by phone.

“Our network of Sony authorized retailers offer a full range of Sony products and will be supported by our in-store Merchandisers and Product Trainers on an ongoing basis in order to ensure that our past customers have continued access to knowledgeable Sales consultants who can support their ongoing Sony electronics needs,“ the company said in a statement.

Sony announced the news on the same day that Target announced its shutting down all its stores in Canada as well, two years and more than $1 billion after it first opened in the country. Target said it was "unable to find a realistic scenario that would get Target Canada to profitability until at least 2021."

The PlayStation 4 was the most sold console of 2014 in the US and globally, selling 18.5 million units in the 14 months since its launch, but Sony has had issues with its other divisions. In February 2014 it announced that it's selling off its VAIO PC brand and restructuring its TV business.

Someplace else said it was 14 Sony stores in Canada that will be closing, not really all that many. Especially when Target had 133 stores there.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Well Target can be its own stand-alone store. Sony stores exist within a mall... probably only the really big ones in Canada which once you cover places like Toronto, Vancouver, Ottawa, Edmonton, Calgary and Montreal... there's really nowhere else to open one.

I don't know why Sony stores even exist. If you want gaming, you go to GameStop. If you want TVs, you go to (in Canada) Future Shop or The Brick or stores like that. It's for the best anyway if Sony is shutting down some of its excess weight. Sony's sold off Vaio, they're considering getting out of TVs, their phones and stuff aren't doing well and they may eventually get the drop too though it seems like they're going to focus in on that market as if it's going to be a last hurrah... but again you'll probably go to a carrier's store over a Sony Store for that. It was a silly concept since its inception.

I've only ever set foot in one because I was curious on why they needed such a large storefront.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> They may not get out of the TV business altogether any time soon but its been reported that they're at least slashing the division so you're probably not going to be seeing 1800 versions of Bravia TVs in the future. Less models equals less floorspace needed in a Sony Store to show them off. Knowing major malls they'll replace the Sony stores with some ugly fashion outlet full of overpriced crap.

Canada has a lot of retail issues which is why people there go to the US to buy stuff. At a 13% tax rate in Ontario, you would too.

<< LINK REMOVED >> It's not easy to do business retailer in Canada, if you cant compete against Walmart consider yourself a failure. But for Target pricing wasnt the only problem, there is quiet alot of flaws like limited selection, empty shelves, no goods from USA but goods from Canada and more list....
