Sony Closing All Its Stores in Canada

Sony will sell and support its products through authorized retailers.

Sony is shutting down all its stores in Canada, the company has announced.

Sony confirmed the news to the CBC News, saying that it will close all its stores in the next six to eight weeks, and that it will redirect all of its business through its national network of Sony retailers, its online stores, and the "Sony-trained Telesales team," which handle sales by phone.

“Our network of Sony authorized retailers offer a full range of Sony products and will be supported by our in-store Merchandisers and Product Trainers on an ongoing basis in order to ensure that our past customers have continued access to knowledgeable Sales consultants who can support their ongoing Sony electronics needs,“ the company said in a statement.

Sony announced the news on the same day that Target announced its shutting down all its stores in Canada as well, two years and more than $1 billion after it first opened in the country. Target said it was "unable to find a realistic scenario that would get Target Canada to profitability until at least 2021."

The PlayStation 4 was the most sold console of 2014 in the US and globally, selling 18.5 million units in the 14 months since its launch, but Sony has had issues with its other divisions. In February 2014 it announced that it's selling off its VAIO PC brand and restructuring its TV business.

I truly feel for those that lost their job and hope they find something soon and make out okay. Sony has been closing a lot of stores and it's sad. A lot of places have been closing doors due to Internet sales and better deals elsewhere. I used to love to see what they had there and remember around the PS1 and 2 era and loved the niche things they had to show. That's when Sony meant the best you can get. I remember getting my 28 inch Vega flat screen tube TV and thought it was the greatest thing. The only thing I wasn't a Sony product was me Denon receiver. Man have times changed.

They used to be cool around the late 90's early 2000's. Then they just because a place of getting the worse bang for your buck.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Not really. The one in our city was just an oversized electronics section like you'd find in Future shop. They never had sales. The only good thing about it was it had sound rooms so you could check out surround systems in an average sized room.

Overpriced. Had one where I grew up and the tvs were more expensive than at the futureshop literally next door to it. They were redundant anyways.

Sony should cut Playstation loose and just face facts, their stuff isn't that popular. May as well save the one thing they are decent at before they drag it down with the rest of the company.

Well considering that Sony hit a huge loss with their mobile phone division it would make sense that they have to make some cutbacks to make up for it. You can't blame Canada necessarily

Why would you blame Canada if Sony can't afford stay in business there?

They should just let them do it for free?

<< LINK REMOVED >> lol, if you have a PS4 in 30 different stores in your area, why would you go all the way to the one Sony store in the city to pick one up? Most people go to wherever is closest or buy online. Why should Sony bother paying rent and utilities on buildings when people can just go to Walmart, Best Buy, Future Shop, EB Games or the host of other places that sell Sony products? They are going to save a huge amount and it won't affect their sales at all. It's smart business. Has nothing to do with Canada's economy.

The Canadian economy isn't looking good right now. Target is leaving completely, and everyone who has went there has left or downsized. I blame Canada more than Sony

<< LINK REMOVED >> The fact of the matter is that Canada isn't a large place. We cannot have Walmart and Best Buy and Future Shop and Costco and Target and etc etc etc when the population of Canadian cities doesn't warrant it. There are only three cities in the country that have more than 1 million people living in it, and 47 cities that have six-digit populations. America has 9 cities with over a million people living in it and over 200 that have six-digit populations. If that's not enough, online shopping is more popular now than it ever was before... which if you're in the heart of the Canadian winter is probably an attractive option over going out and making the trip for whatever it is you need.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Target is just not a good store in canada. They don't even have a webpage with products here. If I want to make a purchase or see what kind of deal somebody has, I check their site. The thought that they could be the next walmart and it didn't happen. The Sony store I found was useless unless you were a pure Sony fan. I know me and all of my friends would rather go to a big box store and compare different brands when buying something.

The economy is not that bad either. Lower oil prices have been putting a lot more money into people pockets. The government may even raise loan rates this year for the first time in what 5 years?

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> That's the thing I never got about the concept of having a Sony Store. Sony doesn't offer anything that's unique to their store or even their own brand (outside of Playstation that is... and what gamer shops at the Sony Store over a GameStop or EB Games?).

The Apple Store makes sense because iOS is theirs and OSX is theirs. They can sell peripherals that are designed to work with their products like headphones with controls that work for the iPhone/iPod. They've turned shopping into an experience there. They really know how to grab young people when it comes to marketing.

The Microsoft Store makes sense... not much but it's enough for a store with Windows being theirs, and that covers PC, phones, laptops and tablets. Peripherals aren't going to do a whole lot there because PC peripherals and laptop peripherals can be had anywhere. It's an attractive place to go if you have a Windows phone or a Surface because peripherals for those are probably a hell of a lot harder to come by anywhere other than a Microsoft Store. That's on top of the whole Xbox thing which if you're driving home something like Kinect, you can offer floorspace to try that out the way that no GameStop or EB Games ever could.

Sony... again, it's just Playstation. Their phones and tablets use Android, their laptops use Windows, and peripherals for both of those can be had at any major electronics retailers, though peripherals that cover the form factor of their stuff (like Microsoft) can probably be found much easier at a Sony Store versus a big box retailer. Peripherals for TVs? Again, universal.

I am an Xbox guy through and through. I am just looked at the big picture. One of the keys to ending a recession is jobs. If the opposite is happening, it is not good. All I am saying is Sony isn't the first, and they probably won't be the last.

<< LINK REMOVED >> i agree with you its not good at all.. believe me we are not celebrating this in canada.. but the model of business is changing and you have to realize that canada is only 10% of the USA's population... with online retailers.. canadian competition there is only so much room in the market.. if you are not operating well someone will eat your lunch.. simple enough

<< LINK REMOVED >> Canada's economy is fine. Sony needs to cut costs. Has nothing to do with the Canadian economy. Some stores just don't do well in some countries. Target never went over well but, Walmart is huge here. Any department store has a hard time competing with Walmart.

Also, I'd blame online shopping more than anything else. Brick and mortar stores are going to start failing. That's just the way it is.

In fact, before the Target announcement unemployment was at an all time low in my area. 4%. Compared to 10% this time last year.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I guess Canada's retail sector might be suffering a bit but sadly, they simply have higher living standards than the US. But they're not really alone in that sense, we are far behind many other 1st world nations when it comes to living standards. The wealthy here in the states have a tighter grip on the government than their 1st world counterparts do which sucks for most nonwealthy people.

Anyway who cares? They're a bunch of socialists anyway. Socialists with better healthcare.
