Sony Closing All Its Stores in Canada

Sony will sell and support its products through authorized retailers.

Sony is shutting down all its stores in Canada, the company has announced.

Sony confirmed the news to the CBC News, saying that it will close all its stores in the next six to eight weeks, and that it will redirect all of its business through its national network of Sony retailers, its online stores, and the "Sony-trained Telesales team," which handle sales by phone.

“Our network of Sony authorized retailers offer a full range of Sony products and will be supported by our in-store Merchandisers and Product Trainers on an ongoing basis in order to ensure that our past customers have continued access to knowledgeable Sales consultants who can support their ongoing Sony electronics needs,“ the company said in a statement.

Sony announced the news on the same day that Target announced its shutting down all its stores in Canada as well, two years and more than $1 billion after it first opened in the country. Target said it was "unable to find a realistic scenario that would get Target Canada to profitability until at least 2021."

The PlayStation 4 was the most sold console of 2014 in the US and globally, selling 18.5 million units in the 14 months since its launch, but Sony has had issues with its other divisions. In February 2014 it announced that it's selling off its VAIO PC brand and restructuring its TV business.

Sony is a sinking ship that is already showing signs of its inevitable bankruptcy and total company wide collapse. For anyone who solely owns a PlayStation 4 I would be very worried, even though the PlayStation division is the only profitable side of the company, it's not a massive amount of profit and it's not enough to keep the company afloat, no where near to.

Why you should be worried is exactly this, they do not and will not have the money to update and secure their network, ever, their online services could cease entirely if they can no longer afford to maintain them or if they go under, they will not be properly updating the platform similar to how Microsoft is with the Xbox One and the monthly updates, there are already signs of this, very weak system updates that are spaced very far apart.

You PlayStation 4 only adopters bought into a solid hardware package, no doubt about that, but the company providing the software to move it forward and maintain it as a platform cannot afford to do so and is utterly falling apart. The PlayStation 4 over this entire generation is going to be left insanely far behind, it could even fail because of all of this.

It may be leading in sales at the moment but when people realize just how far Microsoft is ahead of them in software and how little the platform is being maintained it's going to be a blowout in Microsoft's favor.

<< LINK REMOVED >> well i dont know if you somehow became the leading authority in server security but if you think a few DDOS's and finding out a few email passwords has anything to do with actual security i must tell you you dont know j@ck about it. theres literally no defence to a DDOS attack other then trying to block incoming data (needle in many haystacks) and trying to boost server capacity and hoping it doesn't go down (which simply requires more bots to end).

the fact that you think that SONY is in "a sinking ship" when they have buttload of assets that they haven't even attempted to sell off and whole divisions if needed be, even if they required to go that far (which they wouldn't start doing for at least 9 more year) that money would recoup the debt back for another 10 years at least.

sony updates the console every 3 months, they have always done this even with the ps3 so that "point" your trying to make is flawed as hell because you are are literal ignorant.

even if somehow you are correct and in 20 odd years SONY went down (thats a big if) you REALLY think theres not a company out there that wouldn't buy the playstation brand? only a f00l would think that. there plenty of giant companies that want to get into the console market, they would buy this up in a heartbeat and continue.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Sony has an intrinsic and somewhat small network with no ability to divert attacks, they can't handle an attack and divert it to other resources without the entire network going under. Microsoft on the other hand has a massive network and the ability to divert incoming traffic to specific servers without the integrity of the entire network going down, Xbox Live never actually goes down, it only has outages in certain areas.

Sony's asset's come from unprofitable divisions, in other words they're essentially worthless and no one would want to buy into them in the event they tried to sell them. That's like someone trying to sell you a car with knocking rods and ticking valve's any sane person would walk away.

Look at what they accomplish in three months and look at what Microsoft accomplishes in a single month. One of Microsoft's system updates in a month eclipses what Sony has provided for over an entire year, this is entirely due to the inability to afford the development costs because... They're broke.

Sony is so far in the red and continues to take on so many losses they could go under in the next year unless something changes, I don't know why you're talking about 20 years. Yeah I know a company would buy the PlayStation brand, it's the only saving grace for Sony, and do you know who would buy it? The highest bidder, and that would be Microsoft.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> "divert attacks" you can't just "divert" a DDOS for starters how the hell you meant to know if you are getting DDOSed its not possible. even if you did you could, it would cause more problems diverting the attack as you would need to take everyone offline to do that. and MS did go down they have gone down twice to a total of only 2 DDOS attacks when sony has had 5 and guess what they sent down as well. MS has no "better" "security" at defending a DDOS then maybe having a bigger server capacity (which is meaningless to anyone who can afford to buy bots as you simply buy more) on christmas day they fully went down everyware. so dont try and up MS they are just as likly to go down as well.

you dont lose money on valued good thoes are assets, they aren't worthless in the slightest anyone with basic knowledge of business knows that any assets in a business can be sold off. the fact that your analogy makes no sense and is completely incorrect as its more like selling a ferrari at half its original worth, anyone's body would buy it even if its just to resell.

your wrong again they update every 3 months, they are from japan they do everything in 3 month cycles you idi0t learn some culture. MS on the other hand U turned so much that for 6 months there updates were removal of unwanted policies and software.

lets put it this way in simple terms as "far in the red" they are a total of an inch away from black on meter long line (which black in the middle) they have assets (that aren't worthless) that are studios that are worth millions, game license and stock in businesses. you dont seem to grasp how much stuff SONY has their hands in that they could sell off. stop being an idi0t and look at facts and figures instead of fanboy stup!dity comments that have no actaul logical thought in them.

Their shares continue to tank and investors continue to pull out, if it continues to get worse the pull out could reach a point so large that the company could actually cease to exist. Investors don't like to lose money, they invest for gains, if they fail to make those gains and see continued loss they go elsewhere.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Sony Vaoi was losing money, Sony sold it for $500million. Who would buy it? Investors who think they can turn it around, simple. Remember they don't take on the debts or staff, merely the brand and patents.

You are correct about all those things thus the trimming and cutting, thus the lowering loses, thus some experts saying they have a long way but are at least going in the correct direction.

It cannot be stressed enough how far away they are from collapse. No experts, no numbers point to them going anywhere for at least 10-20 years.

Instead of responding like a blind brand loyalist you should at least be prepared in the likely event that all of this happens. They're broke, they're actually beyond broke and are completely in the red.

Their software and platform development has been piss-poor with the least amount of change due to obvious development cost, their network has always been junk and continues to be due to cost. This is not something which cannot be readily seen with the naked eye.

I'm on this ship with you guys all the same but I at least have a Wii-U, Xbox One & a gaming PC to fall back on... What do you have? Hopes and dreams?

Nothing I said was incorrect, they're broke and showing signs of bankruptcy and company wide collapse, their software & updates have been of very poor quality and content and their network continues to be extremely problematic...

Like I said, continue living in denial, it won't save them or this brand.

As a Canadian all I have to say is good riddance. I've never patronized a Sony store or Target. I shop Canadian owned retailers whenever I can. Sadly, it's difficult to do as so many stores are foreign owned (Perto Canada isn't even Canadian owned - yet has Canada in it's name!).

Sony stores weren't even competitive with their own brand compared to the competition. Software was never in line with competing discounts, and Sony electronics no longer have superior quality compared to even the Korean manufacturers.

Do Canadians even buy the PS4 after they jacked the price up 50 bucks? Everyone I know seems to own an Xbox One, PC, or a WiiU - yes, a WiiU. I'd love to see a breakdown of market share here.

i like how people like to think this is the doom of SONY or something, there's a total of 14 stores in the whole county, its not like closing them down would do anything in terms of finances for SONY. consoles will be sold in most supermarkets and gaming shop in canada, so its not like there missing out on profit either. anyone who thinks more into this is simply an idi0t because they can't comprehend the basics of business, it most likly was "we aren't making a profit close down these shops". my local supermarket tesco closed down a shop near my town, i dont instantly think the companies failing because of it.

Do you know what a Supermarket is? Other than a Super Store, you won't find a console for sale at a supermarket.

Must be a regional thing. In Canada - you cannot buy new videogame software or hardware at Supermarkets. Loblaws was the last Supermarket to do it but they stopped it years ago. Occasionally, they have bargain bin games (that aren't even a bargain).

Those Sony stores didn't see much business lately. I was in one the other day, and there was no deals on anything. You can't compete if you don't have competitive pricing. Target had a similar problem. Low stock on shelves, and very little competitive pricing (opposite of the U.S.), people just didn't have a reason to shop there.

The price of products rise to meet the dropping dollar. I'm talking about competitive pricing compared to other retailers here, like Walmart. Target was a rip off here, compared to them.
