Sony Closing All Its Stores in Canada

Sony will sell and support its products through authorized retailers.

Sony is shutting down all its stores in Canada, the company has announced.

Sony confirmed the news to the CBC News, saying that it will close all its stores in the next six to eight weeks, and that it will redirect all of its business through its national network of Sony retailers, its online stores, and the "Sony-trained Telesales team," which handle sales by phone.

“Our network of Sony authorized retailers offer a full range of Sony products and will be supported by our in-store Merchandisers and Product Trainers on an ongoing basis in order to ensure that our past customers have continued access to knowledgeable Sales consultants who can support their ongoing Sony electronics needs,“ the company said in a statement.

Sony announced the news on the same day that Target announced its shutting down all its stores in Canada as well, two years and more than $1 billion after it first opened in the country. Target said it was "unable to find a realistic scenario that would get Target Canada to profitability until at least 2021."

The PlayStation 4 was the most sold console of 2014 in the US and globally, selling 18.5 million units in the 14 months since its launch, but Sony has had issues with its other divisions. In February 2014 it announced that it's selling off its VAIO PC brand and restructuring its TV business.

A lot of people on here who think they know the future when in reality they know as much as the next man.

Sony isn't going anywhere but you can believe what you like.

Good way to save a bit I suppose, they are heading in the correct direction. Anyway never seen the point in company specific stores: Sony, MS, Apple etc their goods can be bought online and at hundreds of different stores, even supermarkets these days. Waste of said companies money and time if you ask me.

To those saying Sony is going down, well your miles off. They have massive assets and their loses are falling, predicted to be back in constant profit within 5 years...and you can guarantee if Sony was going to go they would keep the PS brand until last. There would be a lot of interest in it as well, I vote for Google or Samsung...f*ck Apple.

<< LINK REMOVED >> We feel the same about them. The U.S. only cares about the U.S. Oh, and any third world country with a bit of oil.

I didn't even know there were still Sony stores in Canada. Our local mall hadn't had one since the late 90's.

It's a shame seeing so much close, nothing thrives in Canada because our consumer base are brainless sheep who don't call out for more product availability variety as well as let themselves be price gouged to high hell.

What is the point in a sony store?

You can buy their products everywhere. Same goes for MS and Apple. Seems like unnecessary overhead.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Exactly, it's pointless to compete with bigger retailers unless they can offer something more enticing or beneficial. I'm always surprised how other people can take things at such face value. It doesn't take a lot of critical thinking to figure out why they would be closing their stores, hell they should have done so long ago.

<< LINK REMOVED >> They are also going after Nvidia and their Shield tablet by advertising the Vita as a streaming device rather than a actual fucking console.
