Driveclub developer Evolution Studios has been closed by its parent company Sony. According to a statement issued to GameSpot, the closure was enacted as part of a restructure to its European studios.

"Regular reviews take place throughout SCE Worldwide Studios, ensuring that the resources that we have in such a competitive landscape can create and produce high quality, innovative and commercially viable projects.

"As part of this process we have reviewed and assessed all current projects and plans for the short and medium term and have decided to make some changes to the European studios structure. It has been decided that Evolution Studio will close."

Sony said it will attempt to shift some developers from Evolution studios, which is also known for its work on the World Rally Championship and Motorstorm franchises, to other teams. It noted, however, that there will be some compulsory redundancies.

"Where possible we will try to reallocate people onto other projects," it said. "If appropriate opportunities are not possible within the company, we will assist staff in any way we can, including speaking with local employers and with other development companies.

"It is regrettable that this decision will lead to compulsory redundancies. We accept that this decision will mean that we risk losing high calibre staff but by focusing on other Studios that already have exciting new projects in development we believe we will be in a stronger position going forward and able to offer the best possible content of the highest quality for our consumers."

Paul Rustchynsky, director of Driveclub, posted a message addressing the closure on Twitter.

"Before I sign off to take a break and spend some time with my family I just wanted to say a few words," he said. "Firstly, a big, big thank you to all the fans that have supported us throughout Evo's storied history; we couldn't have achieved what we did without you.

"Thank you to Sony who helped Evo rise to the top tier of racing game teams in the world, working as a first party team has been a fantastic experience.

"Last but certainly not least: A massive thank you to the whole team at Evo, it truly has been an honour to work with such a talented, passionate and determined group of people. I hope you will all join me in celebrating Evolution by picking up a pad, throwing on your favourite Evo game, and giving us a victory lap."

Evolution community manager Jamie Brayshaw also released a statement on Evolution's closure, confirming that Driveclub will continue to be supported by other teams at PlayStation.

"It's the end of an incredible era for Evolution Studios," Brayshaw wrote. "Driveclub will live on under the care of the awesome team at PlayStation and we hope it will continue to thrive in their safe hands and with continued support from all of you, the players, our community.

"Community has always been at the heart of everything we've worked hard for at Evo. Your endless enthusiasm, support, honesty, and energy was always our biggest motivator. You all helped Evo to become one of the greatest racing gaming studios in the world, and we can't thank you enough for that. You will continue to inspire us while we all take a little break and work out what we're going to do next ... Thank you once more, for everything. The best is yet to come."

Since its launch in October 2014, Driveclub sold over 2 million copies. Although the game was initially criticised for being a barebones experience at launch, Evolution has released numerous content updates and, over time, it has improved significantly.

Maybe developers should stop making these run-of-the-mill arcade racing games and focus on adding new or different game mechanics instead. Why don't you add all out carnage and complete destruction to cars and tracks? Add all types of weird or unusual vehicles (ex. monster trucks, tractors, snow mobile) and power-ups to the game. I'd imagine that a mash-up between Blur, Burnout and Motorstorm would be extremely cool and fun.

Use your creativity and innovation for pete's sake instead of focusing on realism, (licence) authenticity and graphics. Damn, even those Hotwheels games back on the GameCube are more fun than these copy/paste arcade racing games.

@cboye18: A good arcade racer is a good one as a good "sim" is a good one. Driveclub was just mediocre whatever the genre.

But it isn't even about just that. If the managers had faith in the future they wouldn't be closing all of these studios. Some of these closed studios have made good games.

@PrpleTrtleBuBum: True; I think it's punishing to not give them another chance to prove themselves.

@cboye18: MotorStorm?

@brn-dn: You don't know the MotorStorm franchise? They are arcade racing games exclusive to the ps3.

@cboye18: I think the point he was making is that the MotorStorm games are not run-of-the-mill.

@i_am_kesmonkey: Not really; split-second, blur and motorstorm did try to add different mechanics to the usual racing game but they ultimately failed in execution.

That's pretty surprising and doesn't really make sense.

Sony murdering another studio after claiming they were excited to see what they could do in the future l-o-l

Not surprising DC was a big flop, despite fanboys claiming it was "fixed", can't patch a bad game, graphics all it had

@EducatingU_PCMR: Over 2 million for a new IP is now a flop?

@brn-dn: According to the fan base it is.

@brn-dn: Why did Sony shut them down, then?

They clearly didn't make enough.

Avatar image for brn-dn

@EducatingU_PCMR: I don't know, maybe Sony noticed there's a ton of other racing games out there so they don't need two studios that make them.

@brn-dn: So we don't need PGR, Forza, and Forza Horizon?

Arcade, sim, open world

Avatar image for brn-dn

@girlusocrazy: Like I said there's tons of racing games. How many AAA racing games launched this gen? Project Cars, The Crew, Need For Speed, DriveClub and a bunch more from smaller publishers.

@brn-dn: They're filling the space left by Burnout, Ridge Racer, and other franchises that have disappeared, plus it's not like we even get one of those each year apart from NFS. Choice is good and the releases are spread out enough. Those games aren't all even cross platform, and PC could actually use more racing games. Luckily Forza is coming

Wow...these guys made the Motorstorm franchise, about the only racing game that I care about on the playstation. That sucks.

Microsoft should have a job fair for them

Imagine how many Fable devs would be pissed off by that.

@LPDisturbedHU: MS took LH employees to The Coalition, Rare and PlaygroundGames. I'm pretty sure a charity fair for Evolution will be a good "deed".

@R2C25: Do you have a source for that info? I never heard anything about that.

If so, then that's a completely different scenario entirely. haha

@elheber: a bad launch but they made up for it with all the content and the finished game

Sad. Hopefully those affected can relocate to new jobs and positions quickly.

It was already gutted when DC shipped, good luck to the remaining employees that worked with the base game to make it something special. It ended up being an excellent game.

@girlusocrazy: Every AAA studio hires new people to help complete a game and then when the game is shipped they leave.

Avatar image for girlusocrazy

@brn-dn: Yeah but when it happened Sony announced it was the first step in "sunsetting" ES and only support work would be done until they reached the end. It was just a matter of when. Guess all the content and major server/client work is done.
