Sony celebrates a million Minis

Bite-sized software line downloaded over a million times since launching nine months ago; Age of Zombies is top seller, Pac-Man Championship Edition coming.

Sony's tiniest games have made a big noise, as the company today announced that titles in the Minis line have been downloaded over 1 million times globally since debuting nine months ago.

Mini is the new huge.
Mini is the new huge.

The software line was announced at GamesCom 2009 in August and hit the market alongside Sony's UMD-less PSP Go, which launched October 1. The Minis line, which is composed of titles generally priced under $10 and weighing in around 100 MB in size, later expanded to the PlayStation 3 via a firmware update.

Additionally, the Minis section of the PlayStation Store has seen many updates since it launched last fall. The number of titles in the Minis library has expanded from 15 at launch to more than 85 presently from over 50 developers.

According to Sony, the 10 most popular Minis titles are:

1. Age of Zombies
2. Monopoly
3. Fieldrunners
4. Zombie Tycoon
5. Bloons
6. Spot the Differences!
7. Pinball Fantasies
8. Mahjongg Artifacts: Chapter 2
9. Yetisports Pengu Throw
10. Breakquest

Though there were no Minis added to this week's PlayStation Store Update, Sony promises more titles are on the way, including Namco Bandai's Pac-Man Championship Edition.

Sony please add trophy support to these games so that it actually adds replay value? I don't see myself wasting money on games that you instantly get bored of in 5 minutes and then completly forget about it. Thats what I hate about mins, a poor man's PSN game without trophy support.

@Maximus_Fett I had a look at Coconut Dodge on Youtube...it looks painfully boring and very amateurish, but it also looks like one of those games that you play and, in spite of being horrible, you can't stop playing. Does that about sum it up?

Big news breaker will be when Sony reduces the ridiculously over-priced PSP Go.

I'm wondering how many out there are being overly critical because it's associated with the name "Sony"? If this were on the DS or on XBox Live I suspect many would be saying "Thez r awsum!" @berto64 Just because a game doesn't involve mindlessly dismembering non-descript enemies doesn't mean it's "boring". Quite frankly I find the countless "shoot anything that moves" first person shooters boring.

I like minis. IMO they are much nicer than iPhone games (buttons are better than touchscreen), plus many of them have nice colorful visuals, nice music and have a charming look to them :)

As long as Sony keeps in mind that low cost games should not be of shovel-ware quality, these games would continue to sell.

I didn't like the first few released aside from Tetris, but I'm sure there are good ones here and there.

Pinball Fantasies was great on the old Amiga :) Fond memories. The rest of them, well...I don't know.

Good on em - I love the minis, and they're the only games that I buy over PSN. They're simple, fun and don't take up too much space on my poor 1GB stick. I do like my PSP, but most of the games are useless for a quick play while waiting at the doctor's or for a bus or train. I do play Tekken: DR and Dissidia a lot, but connected via cable to my TV. The PSP's own screen is mainly used for the minis. I was amazed that Tetris didn't make it into the top ten though...it's a great implementation of it...

Seems that zombies are pretty much the theme for successful minis! The only problem I have with them is that there is so little coverage about the quality of minis. I know it's only a couple of quid we're talking about for each mini, but a few reviews would be helpful now and then. I know a few of the main gaming magazines have some reviews, but they are usually put in as an afterthought and usually always reviewed a lot later than the games are released.

Get iPhone(ish) games on your PS3! and then not be able to take them anywhere when you're bored like on a bus or plane. Doesn't make sense to me.
