Sony Bend-ing Uncharted on NGP

Syphon Filter and Resistance: Retribution developer will craft Nathan Drake's first handheld adventure under Naughty Dog's direction.

One of the highlights of Sony's Next Generation Portable (NGP) presentation last night was an extended demo of a new Uncharted game for the system (see below). The series' first portable outing was put through its paces on the new handheld, including a variety of climbing moves controlled by the portable's front touch screen and rear touch pad.

Sony Bend will be in charge of Nathan Drake's first handheld adventure.
Sony Bend will be in charge of Nathan Drake's first handheld adventure.

When the Uncharted game was being demonstrated by Sony Computer Entertainment senior vice president of product development Shuhei Yoshida, he said it was an original title being developed under the supervision of Naughty Dog. Today, Game Informer confirmed that the studio developing the title is Sony Bend, a Sony Worldwide Studios shop located in Bend, Oregon.

Developing a portable version of a major Sony franchise will be nothing new for Sony Bend. The studio was behind 2009's Resistance: Retribution, a critically acclaimed third-person spin-off of Insomniac's popular first-person sci-fi shooter series. The operation is also known for bringing another high-profile franchise to the PSP in the form of 2006's Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror and 2007's Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow. Sony Bend also developed the PlayStation 2 editions of both games, as well Syphon Filter: The Omega Strain (2004) and Syphon Filter 3 (2001).

I love Sony Bend, they are an awesome company. They made the hit PSP Classic Syphon Filter Dark Mirror and SF Logans Shadow. They also made Resistance Retribution for the PSP. All of them were awesome games but a bit repetitive. So hopefully this game isn't repetitive and is really good.

@Sirbobislost - very true... although, I do have one happy memory of using the Sixaxis function, and that was to steer arrows to their target on Heavenly Sword... I really liked how it worked then. One of the few moments I've enjoyed motion control this gen....

Ugh...so, Sony is trusting the portable versions of their best franchises to their second-string developers? It's like the PSP all over again.

Wow! The use of the sensor for the sniper aiming is actually really cool and a pretty good idea. Looks good, for a portable, no one can argue that.

I'm already sold. I agree that pricing the NGP will be critical to how well this will sell. But up to now, Sony has always been reasonable with pricing their products. Each dollar you spend assures you more quality when it comes to Sony hardware. :D

Wow the NGP is going to be crazy. If they get the price right I am sure this thing will sell like crazy. If any game could make me want an NGP it would be Uncharted and I can't believe the visuals. NGP makes the 3DS pail in comparison. Now I am completely torn on which one to buy!

Very impressive! And this is just a first gen title. It took years for the PSP to start showing off what it could really do graphically. Can't wait to see what the future of the NGP will look like.

@SicklySunStorm Yes like the six-axis thing on the ps3 yeah it's nice but how often have you ever used it? Off the top of my head I can only think of using it to turn a gas valve in killzone2 not exactly the most thrilling memory lol

With ND watching over them, i'm sure it will be great. Going to use the normal controles instead of the touchscreen. This alone is enough to make me buy the NGP. As long as the NGP is at a good price that wont make me wanna cry

The controls in that game looked awful. Why make a dualstick, multiple button handheld and have it play like an iPhone or a DS? The NGP is more gimmicky than the 3DS. Images looked stunning, tho. Can they sell it for less than $399? Their PS3 losses nearly sank the company, so I am not sure that Sony can afford to sell this well below cost like they typically do with console launches.

@Mr_Alexander: I'm sure 3D does seem like a gimmick but the truth is it can enhance immersion and the experience. Things coming out of the screen is good for horror / survival games which obviously try and scare people and cause a claustrophobic feel, then on fantasy / rpg games it would feel a little more magical when the blasts and magic is also spewing out of the screen and ambient energy pouring out etc. Action games would benefit from explosions literally coming at you and bullets flying away from the screen and into you etc. for rather cool cinematic scenes that engage you more. I'm not saying 3D isn't a gimmick as it was but it doesn't mean the gimmick can't be used to good effect. It's not like NGP is without gimmick with its touch sensitive screen, of which I have doubt it will be implemented well. Just look at the six axis and move support. While the move is supported more its still mostly tacked on controls to proper games and not many games developed just with move in mind. Sony has a horrible track reckod with motion devices (like eye toy too which stayed casual almost all its life) so I see there gimmick as worse but nonetheless some will use it for good so I'm happy they did include it.

Actually with Sony's 3D TV's, laptops and games streak, I'm kinda surprised they didn't make this into a 3D handheld. >.>

Geez, now i'm torn between buying Batman Arkham city, Uncharted 3, Gear of war 3, Zelda: skyward sword, Marvel vs Capcom 3, Dissidia 012, and the 3rd Birthday or buying a NGP (PSP2) and a 3DS plus games for the two of them. Either way my pockets are going to be hurting. But in all seriousness both handhelds are looking great. I'm not really into the whole 3D gimmick yet something about the 3DS keeps pulling me in and when i thought the PSP2 couldn't be much better than the 3DS, BAM!!! I'm sucked right in.

As if the 2 games they made were good references. They were decent games nowhere near the quality of an Uncharted. Not to mention they had pathetic story and dialogues (which was fine for the kind of game Syphon filter and resistance are but certainly not for an uncharted).

@sirbobislost - took the words right out of my mouth. They can include all the gimmicky controls they want if it'll help the games sell to the casual crowd, as long as they support being able to press a button also as a simplified alternative for seasoned vets...

just what we need more milking of new ps3 exclusives, thats why psp failed to beat the ds sony. at least nintendo is smart enuff to not make a real pokemon game on its console you dont have either. everything is on both ps3 and soon to be psp 2.. ypu better come up with something new thats only on the psp 2 or the high price wont be the only thing that help nintendo get another easy handheld win...
