Sonic Trailer Delivers First Good Look At Live-Action Movie

Gotta go fast!

Despite how surreal the idea of a live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie may seem, it is in fact happening and inevitable. If the numerous cast confirmations haven't been enough to convince you that we will soon live in a world where a wide-eyed blue hedgehog that runs fast will inhabit the same space as real human beings, the newly released trailer certainly will. [Update: Plans to redesign Sonic in the wake of the negative reaction to the first trailer have now led to the release date being delayed.]

The trailer, which you can watch above, gives us a nice overview of the story. As you might expect, it's a familiar tale of Sonic going up against Robotnik, who is up to no good in San Francisco. This time, though, the bad doctor appears to be affiliated with the military G-men investigating what's up with the blue hedgehog. He's also surprisingly sassy for an evil doctor, and the end of the trailer teases a more familiar look for him.

Now Playing: Sonic The Hedgehog - Official Movie Trailer

Although Sonic will be brought to life via CGI, the beloved character is being voiced in the movie by Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation, House of Lies), who is a seasoned voice actor having appeared as Dewey Duck in the new Duck Tales Show and Rutabaga Rabitowitz in BoJack Horseman.

Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik, meanwhile, is being played by Jim Carrey. In the games, he's portrayed as a mad scientist, an archetype that Carrey has played numerous times across his illustrious career. In an interview, Carrey said that that the Sonic movie will appeal to families, but will also have an edge to it. "I made sure that there are some winks and nods, and edgy things that are still acceptable to both age groups," he explained.

James Marsden, who is known for his recent work in HBO's Westworld, will also be in the film as a state trooper who catches onto Sonic's super speed. The new trailer shows him forming a buddy relationship with the speedster and getting into hijinks.

The Sonic movie is being directed by Jeff Fowler (Gopher Broke), with Deadpool director Tim Miller producing. It is set for release on November 19, 2019; it was originally expected to premiere in 2018 before being delayed.

I dunno, seems kinda fun. Sonic looks a weird, for sure, but otherwise it looks like it could be entertaining. I can get passed the weird if the movie is all around enjoyable.

It does surprise me they didn't get some fans to do the artwork for Sonic since many submitted improved versions online.

I love how everyone can know everything about everything with only seeing .5% of that thing. "Sonic looks too human, this movie is not true to the game." You mean the game where a hedgehog puts on sneakers and defies the laws of gravity with speed as he chases down some crazy guy who builds these incredible contraptions just to trap bunnies and birds. Oh and Chaos emeralds, cannot forget those. Im not sure what people expected for a sonic movie.

I wonder how most people would feel about the trailer if hating it wasn't a meme. When I saw the first screenshots, I was like ohhhhh boy that thing looks creepy. Watching the trailer it doesn't seem as creepy at all.

@rodoxthedark: Wrong. They wouldn't have used Sonic if it wasn't targeting his grown-up fans as well. Your 4 yo likely has no clue who he is, so they could have saved money by inventing a new character.

@jach: my daughter has been raised by a gaming geek she knows who sonic is, also why would inventing a new character be any cheaper in film than using sonic

@rodoxthedark: It's LITERALLY cheaper to invent a new character because there are not licensing issues to work out. That said, you are both partly right and partly right. It is clearly aimed at people who grew up with Sonic (and boy is it insulting to those people after seeing the trailer), but it is also aiming at the kids of those people that will basically watch anything dumb and comedic and animated, etc.

Man, these guys are good. This is by far the biggets garbage I have ever seen. It takes a real genius to come up with something like this. Impressive.

It really makes me wonder what kind of people are willing to direct movies like that. And how this would benefit their career. "Oh yeah, I've made that Sonic movie last year." "Oh, you did that? I see..."

And the even bigger question: who funds this crap, flushing money down the drain for no reason?

In limminy Snicket Jim Carrey portrayed the perfect pedahh (forget I mentioned that) I mean villain.

However I'm not sure the new sonic version fits Jim Carrey look, maybe they should have did a star wars type CGI with egg man, not everything needs a celebrity maybe the voice.

So we have fresh Prince of Bel air, and Aladdin (oh boy) and hellboy (with worse voice to date) alot of poor remakes.

Hopefully lion kings great.

But back to sonic design, it clearly couldn't have been designed by Hollywood because something looks wrong with sonic, is he to shiny, does he have a monkeys ass on he's face, something definitely wrong with sonic.

Remember folks, Sega does what Nintendon't. And Nintendo doesnt put their key characters in movies anymore thanks to that awful Mario movie from the 90s.

@KerenskyTheRed: I have bad news for you. Nintendo confirmed a new Mario movie is on the way. But they're hands on this time, which I doubt the Sonic Team was for this, so you're still correct in the first half.

I'm not sure what to think. The Sonic like character certainly does not look like the classic Sonic from any of the games or even the cartoons. The visuals give me a Smurfs movie kind of vibe. Though the song really throws everything off. I can't tell if the movie is going to be for a younger audience or try to be a serious inner-city crime movie for an older audience.

Can't really say much on one trailer, but movies based on video games rarely do well. Sonic has had a mini comeback recently and I don't want to see a potentially terrible movie ruin that.

@lion2447: It's trying both. I think they realize what age most Sonic fans are now, so they're going the Michael Bay route for some parts, but also realize that Sonic himself is targeted for children, so they combine it with the Smurfs movie.
You can clearly see the Bay-ishness in the action, and the loss of any imagination from Smurfs, by pushing Sonics world away and forcing him into some place in America.

I'm hoping that thanks to Carrey, they are pushed to make a better script, to make this entertaining, because it just looks formulaic.

@jach: Hopefully not like the Transformers movies. I couldn't get through those movies. Especially Age of Extinction. It was just too long and I gave up once the Dinobots showed up. I haven't seen Bumblebee, but I heard that one is a good movie, so it's not all bad.

I'm hoping for a good script as well, but it's an uphill battle. It just seems the curse of game to movie adaptations never doing well.

@Pwnslaught: I think you'll find that the majority of people on here are triggered by Sonic and pretty unimpressed with Jim Carrey. He's just not funny anymore and he's got a bit of an unsettling personal life that puts people off. Also, I can't tell if you are trying to ironically use the word 'snowflake' or not, since that is primarily a tactic of internet trolls and uninformed elderly conservatives, but you should probably just stop. It makes you sound like a real dumb$hit. And I say this as a 'liberal snowflake' myself.

@YellowSublimaze: I don't seem to recall the word "extremist politics" being thrown around by people when the right was having a meltdown over Obama. Jim Carrey criticized Trump and anyone still in denial over how the president has carried himself is deeply adherent to his cult of personality, whereas Brie Larson simply asked for more diversity in her press meetings which also the right seems to have a huge problem with.

@Henry518: Yes I listened to everything she said and she didn't say anything remotely offensive. Also if you're going to use logic properly at least mention that my response about Trump and diversity are directly attributable to Jim Carrey and Brie Larson rather than make it seem like I'm the one who is saying it.

@stealthy1: Then you are pretty good at being blind to your own side of the political spectrum when it serves your purpose since I see plenty of comments of triggered crybabies criticizing Jim's personal life rather than talking about his acting chops. Which is funny since he has done many many stupid movies before that did well at the box office yet it's only now conservatives are complaining about him, I wonder why ;D.

@Pwnslaught: Ok I will bite, How do you identify who the so called conservatives are below? Because I don't see the first one that claims to be a conservative. Jim Carey has always been a polarizing actor. People generally love his work or hate it, including actors that have worked with him Tommy Lee Jones hated him (I use the term hate loosely) when they were making the Batman movie.

@spartanx169x: Jim Carrey - Made left wing political statements.

Conservatives - Complaining about his political statements

While everyone on the left does not always agree, nobody there would complain about what he said, not even all conservatives would.

@spartanx169x: Because further down someone directly referenced him making political statements? Also the comments here sound exactly like the ones directed against Brie Larson. Not a peep about her before and on these very comment section the crybabies were literally losing their damn minds about her and calling her a shit actor when she is a critically acclaimed Oscar winner just because she said she wanted more diversity in her press meetings and a comment about her target audience taken out of context.

The same goes with Jim. He made some comments criticizing Trump and once again the snowflakes come crawling of the woodwork to cry about it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

@Pwnslaught: Ah, I think you are mistaken. I looked thru the comments. Not one that I saw mentioned anything political but you. Lots of comments about Carey not be funny anymore , but not a single comment Carey making political statements at the time I posted. My point was and still is you were making assumptions based on nothing other than your own issues. Why you feel the need to bring politics to a gaming site is baffling to me. I would also add that its also in part to the poor moderating on this site. Politics should be left on the politics sites. Its simply not needed here regardless of where people stand in their views and drags the site down.

It looks like Jim Carrey is trying to play one of his "90's" goofy characters and as we all saw from Dumb and Dumber 2 that just doesn't work with a 2019 audience.
