Now Playing: Sonic The Hedgehog Movie Delayed As Sonic Gets A Redesign - GS Universe News Update

The Sonic the Hedgehog movie's release date has been delayed to February 14, 2020. The film was originally set to be released this November, but following a negative reaction to the design of the titular character, which was showcased in the first trailer (watch it above), the movie has now been put back three months while he is reworked.

The news came via a tweet from director Jeff Fowler. The tweet reveals the new date, and states that the filmmakers are "taking a little more time to make Sonic just right." Check it out below:

The trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog was released in April. There was much criticism online about Sonic's appearance, and within a day Fowler had stated that the character would be redesigned ahead of the film's release. There was some concern that a complete Sonic redesign in short time would lead to rushed VFX work, but at least now the filmmakers have more time to get the design right.

Criticism for Sonic's design in the movie was aimed at pretty much every part of the speedy blue hedgehog. Much of the dislike seems to stem from the movie version's legs, torso, teeth, and eyes. The initial Sonic design in the movie made him appear uncannily human, which some fans have found unnerving.

Sonic is voiced by Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation), with Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik. Westworld's James Marsden will feature as a state trooper who catches onto Sonic's super speed.

It's annoying how film makers always try to make cartoony things so realistic. I wish we could have super hero movies where the characters actual wear their super hero/super villain costumes.

Funny the people that were complaining probably won’t even buy a ticket to see this movie. I thought the redesign was weird but hey, it’s a redesign. It’s not like you didn’t have to get used to how ugly and weird the old Sonic was

"How can this be any worse than the stories Naka presented to us is in SA1 & SA2, and Sonic06?"

I am surprised Paramount took the fans suggesting the design was terrible. My nephews both wanted to see this movie and they aren't even fans of Sonic nor have played any of the Sonic games. What's even interesting is they didn't complain about how Sonic looked in the trailer. Hopefully they reshoot the entire movie as a redesign wouldn't be much. Still i plan on seeing it with my nephews next year, hopefully the extra time means Paramount makes it good though I have my doubts.

Those fans crying foul were never going to see the movie anyway. Other fans of Sonic didn't like all the other aspects of the movie in addition to the design, so they're out. The only hope they had for this movie were the curious fans and possibly the young child audience dragging their parents to go see it (and they don't care about the "authentic" design, so this is wasted on them). Spending who knows how much more money to redesign and replace the old design in the movie seems like a bad idea. They were already looking at a low gross, and now they are going to have to make more money to cover the added production costs with no real reason for more people to watch. They should've just released it as-is and crossed their fingers to make some kind of profit.

@lodoss900: I'm an adult and I'll probably see it just because I'm a big sonic fan. It's probably going to be like detective pikachu, where it's made with older fans and adults in mind, but is still kid friendly

Major props for changing it. With all the time and money they have to put into it just for the fans, must not have been easy for the higher ups to agree too. I'll go see it.

@Lord_Sesshy: Believe me, Paramount is not making the changes "for the fans". The studio is sinking $90 million into a film that they hope to be a new film franchise for them, and that doesn't even count what they are spending for merchandising and countless product tie-ins. They changed the release date because they know they won't be able to compete with Frozen 2 in November, or the new Star Wars movies in December. Add in the backlash that the design and trailer received, and you got a studio that's scrambling to salvage some sort of profitability from the whole mess.

@hallenbeck77: Well more so "because" of the fans and not for them, but still, they wouldn't have changed the design if no one said anything. I'm sure they are only doing it so it will please them and in turn hopefully make more money. The director seemed to care so it's whatever.

And Frozen 2's release date has been known for a while, if they didn't want to release next to it why not just make it for January or something in the first place. Many people have been saying that 6 months doesn't seem like a long enough time to make the cosmetic changes to Sonic so maybe the release date change is just in response to needed more time. I try to just take things at face value. It's too stressful to think everything is corporate greed, I'm sure some of it is but perhaps maybe not all the time.

@Lord_Sesshy: I think the revamp is more the studio's decision, and not so much the director's. Had not the negative reaction of the trailer and Sonic's reveal took place, the studio would have been content with its initial release date two weeks before Frozen 2 opens. Now with them deciding to revamp Sonic at the last minute, they have no choice but to move the release date to February, which is not the ideal time to release a big-budget movie. January and February is know as the time where new film releases go to die--it's a dumping ground where movies with little to no financial expectations are released. If the studio had more faith in it, it could have pushed for a spring release, but at this rate, I think they might try to make an attempt for this to be a hit, but it's slim at this point. The whole thing seems like a movie that was made by committee by out of touch studio execs who hope to capitalize on the nostalgia that people have for Sonic. it's a 2019 (now, 2020) movie that feels so out of date.

Maybe they'll fix Sonic being unable to dodge a dart in one scene and then in another being able to dance around missiles seemingly frozen in time. Or they won't. Because they think people still have the same sh***y standards they did back in the 90s. Which some do...

@p0tent: I'm sure the higher ups have the mindset of "cartoony/anime style is for little kids only; we must make everything grittier to appeal to a wide audience". But Sonic's original iconic cartoony design has survived for years as one of the most recognizable characters in gaming; they shouldn't have tried to fix something that wasn't broken.

The voice actor for sonic seems to be good enough..(at least form the preview that I'd seen recently.) He didn't look TOO bad, though making him closer to what he normally looks like will be a good thing. What I'm wondering is why they didn't get Jaleel White to voice Sonic...he's been voicing the character for YEARS in several versions of the show.

@Artha_Penn:

Jaleel White voiced Sonic in The Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog and Sonic Underground in the 1990's and 1995. He hasn't voiced Sonic since then as Jason Griffith voiced him in Sonic X and the videogames.

@Artha_Penn: That would have made no sense, considering Jaleel hasn't voiced Sonic in close to 30 years and he was never that good anyway. It would have made much more sense to approach Roger Craig Smith, since he's the current voice, but he's not really that good either. A completely new casting choice is probably the most sensible decision.

I don’t understand why people get so upset over these movies, maybe it’s because they have a free social media platform (that’s paid for with their privacy and identify credentials without their knowledge). If you want to do something about it, vote with your wallet or quit your job and learn how to get funding to make movies to make your own movie. If you don’t want to take any action then don’t complain. The movie is going to have one of those hollow plots that is still entertaining and cute...just like the current crop of Fast and Furious movies.

If they missed the mark so bad the first time why do we think they got the plot, feel, writing, humor or cinematography right?

They would have been better off scraping the whole thing. Sega should have been all over this long before any of the audience was.

If this movie is quite violent, then Carrey will probably go cry in the corner just like he did after Kick-Ass 2. But he could make a good Dr. Robotnik.

@JustPlainLucas: I work in TV animation and in my experience, believe me, there definitely would have been plenty of people that would have thought he looked horrendous. The problem is... a lot of the time the final visual direction is determined by people further up the ladder who generally don't have an artistic background and will often disregard the artists' professional opinion because they believe they know better.

I've seen my fair share of character designs get watered down and turned to complete mush by higher-ups over the years. In the end, we artists know that we are being paid to fulfill someone else's vision... so we bite our lip, do our part to make it as good as we can, and take our paycheck. I used to try push back more on that stuff but now I find its much more rewarding to funnel that unused creativity into personal projects.

(Sorry for the rant... just wanted to let people know that most of us artists DO care, we're often just ignored)

I don't get it why they think design is the problem. The problem is everything else. The template plot, the lame jokes, in fact how people consider Jim Carrey a ray of light shows how hopeless this movie is. He's just as about as lame as his old Ace Ventura stchicks. Even The Smurfs was still better. However bad it was, I still got genuine laughter from Gargamel.

@cetaepsilon: Jim Carrey is a very animated character with extraordinary control over his facial expressions and an over the top personality. For playing a cartoon villain as silly as Robotnik is, choosing him actually sounds like a reasonable decision. Disliking him is just being irrational. He's a great casting choice.

Of course, that doesn't mean the movie will be any good. I'm just saying the choice of Carrey makes sense and suggesting otherwise is just silly.

@Barighm: Some people just don't like Jim Carrey. Deal with it.

Also, they don't even advertise Jim Carrey's name on the posters or in the preview. That should tell you how much faith studios have nowadays in Jim Carrey's star power.
