If there's one trait Sonic the Hedgehog lacks, it's patience. Despite that, patience is now the keyword for Sega's mascot, as the publisher has delayed the downloadable debut of Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 from this summer to late 2010.

Maybe now Sonic can slow it down a bit.
Maybe now Sonic can slow it down a bit.

In a post on the official Sonic blog, a Sega representative said the delay was imposed "to ensure that Sonic 4: Episode 1 is a game worthy of bearing the weight of its name." The post also notes that the extra development time is allowing the publisher to incorporate fan feedback into the final game.

In addition to the delay, Sega announced that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is also in development for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The game had already been confirmed for release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii.

While diehard fans have often pleaded for a new 2D installment in the Sonic series, the publisher has for years pursued 3D projects and spin-offs. Recently, the series incorporated gameplay revolving around transmogrification in Sonic Unleashed. The iconic hedgehog also tried out high-speed driving skills in Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing and character progression in the BioWare-developed DS role-playing game Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood.

For more on Sonic the Hedgehog 4, check out today's episode of On the Spot (set to go live at 4 p.m. Pacific time), featuring an interview with Sega associate brand manager Ken Balough.

I hope they do a good job, Sonic was my favourite platformer series growing up so I really hope for a good 2D sonic game again :).

@Maxor127 Couldn't agree with you more... I'm glad I'm not the only one that doesn't want 1/3 of a Sonic game.

Here's some feedback: dump the episodic crap and release a full game.

This game is going to be Sonic's best game in a while.

I honestly thought Sonic the Hedgehog '06 wasn't that bad. But if this game is even a little bit better than that one, I'll be blown away.

If a delay can prevent this game from repeating what happened to Sonic the Hedgehog for Xbox 360/PS3, I'd be more than glad to wait so Sega can polish it up for release.

Fan feedback? I wonder what fans have they been listening to for the last couple games. Possibly the down syndrome ones

@Flint247 Well most of the mainline games since the Dreamcast era have been at least of inferior quality if not down right horrible. I know the Gameboy Advance and DS Sonic games are decent but they don't match the quality of the original Genesis classics although they are probably as good as the old Game Gear Games. The only good 3D sonic games were Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, Heroes is only ok, the 2006 Sonic game was horrendous, and Sonic Unleashed was so so. The glory days of the Genesis era has long passed Sonic, and Sonic 4 obviously seeks to follow. I hope that Sega uses this extra development time to make Sonic 4 a game worthy of the hedgehog's roots.

I'm glad they decided to do this. I'm a fan, so make it like a modernized Sonic 2 or 3.

@JaxxRaxor Not all Sonic games after the Dreamcast were horrible, there were quite a few good ones: Sonic Advance 1-3, Sonic Rush 1, 2, Sonic Battle and Sonic Heroes (I know that last game is hated, but I thought it was pretty good. Not too amazing, but good)

It's good to see them taking their time for this game, but even most important, to see them hearing what Sonic fans want after all those failed experiments. The racing game was really nice, tough.

"The post also notes that the extra development time is allowing the publisher to incorporate fan feedback into the final game." ... uhhm, is anyone else concerned about this? IMO, what most gamers/critics think they want, isn't actually what they'd enjoy the most. "DUHH SONIC IS ALL ABOUT SPEEED" *facepalm*

I like 2d and 3d Sonic games, just as long as the gameplay isn't too messy.

GREAT NEWS. I've played episode one already and it wasn't good. Sonic moves much too slow and the level design needed some improvement. The music was also terrible, which is a slap in the face to the classic Sonic games. I was concerned about the graphics before I played but after seeing it I can safely say that they rock

Disappointing, but I hope that Sega can rendeem Sonic's name by making Sonic 4 a game that is actually good. I mean Mario has soared but ever since Sega went out of the console business Sonic has sucked bad.

I dunno, I don't think we really need another Sonic game after so many years. We have some really hight quality DLC-only games being launched this year, I'm anxious for Deathspank personally. Sonic belongs to 1990 imho, it didn't age well.

And with this delay they have changed the fate of the Sonic franchise......for the better.

Good. They should have stuck with a successful formula in the first place instead of doing all these weird off-titles.

I look at this as a good thing,it will give them more time to make it as perfect as it can get! Until then,Super Mario Galaxy 2 will get my mind off Sonic 4.

Avatar image for deactivated-57ad0e5285d73

Good news. Hopefully it gets handed off to fix the game, which was probably terrible. My guess is that all the focus went to the pretty graphics, and level design went unnoticed.

dude, I remember playing sonic 1 back on the sega genesis. It was cool back then, but If this is just a nostalgia buy and a bad game, that would be a shame. Let it die already!?!

So they're delaying a game that is a return to the style from the early '90s where a "dev team" consisted of four people and games got made almost yearly because...

Well figures the game's delayed. that's okay it's better than releasing an muttled game to die from bad reviews.
