Last month, retailer listings suggested that Sonic Generations would be receiving a special edition exclusive to Europe with an extra stage and other digital goodies. Although that package has since showed up on North American retailer sites as a preorder bonus, today Sega announced that there will be a second premium edition that's definitely exclusive to Europe.

In addition to the game, the Sonic Generations Collectors Edition will feature a 20th anniversary statue with both modern and vintage versions of Sonic, as well as an individually numbered prop gold ring. Rounding out the package are an art book and soundtrack covering the mascot's two-decade run, a documentary titled "History of Sonic: Birth of an Icon," and an assortment of downloadable content. Sega has not said how much the premium edition will cost gamers.

Sonic Generations will touch upon three different eras of the Sega mascot: the classic 2D Genesis days, the move to 3D with the Dreamcast, and then today's modern HD graphics phase. Sega has rebuilt a number of levels from games gone by for Sonic Generations, and players will be able to speed through these stages in 2D and 3D perspectives. Sonic's abilities will also depend on the incarnation that players choose, as the spin dash and spin attacks will be open to Sonic 2D, while his 3D persona will be able to use the homing attack and sonic boost abilities.

Though the stages will be reimaginings of classic levels, Sonic Generations will feature a new storyline. In it, a "mysterious new power" opens up rips in space time, which pull Sonic and his crew back in time, where he battles new challenges alongside his former self.

Sonic Generations is set for a November release on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, with a Nintendo 3DS edition planned but with an unannounced release window. For more on Sega's latest, check out GameSpot's previous coverage of Sonic Generations..
