Sonic Frontiers Is An Open-World Game Coming In 2022, First Screenshot Has BOTW Vibes
A new "open-zone" Sonic game is coming next holiday season. Check out the first trailer here.
Sega took the wraps off its next Sonic game at The Game Awards, an open-world title called Sonic Frontiers. The trailer showed the new adventure in action and teased a release window of late 2022.
Sega is calling this an "open-zone-inspired" game, marrying Sonic's iconic zones with open-world mechanics. Sonic Frontiers takes place in Starfall Islands, a new setting with open landscapes including forests, waterfalls, and deserts. The first trailer gave us an overview of the environments and teased a massive boss encounter.
Frontiers is being developed by Sonic Team Japan, and led by Morio Kishimoto, who also directed Sonic Colors, Sonic Lost World, and Sonic Forces.
"Sonic Frontiers is a huge leap forward for the franchise, delivering an evolved gameplay experience that can be enjoyed by longtime Sonic fans and action-adventure enthusiasts alike," Sonic Team USA creative officer Takashi Iizuka said in the announcement. "With the effort of the talented developers at Sonic Team Japan, we’ve created an all-new style of gameplay experience for Sonic the Hedgehog, where players will be able to explore lush and expansive landscapes with Sonic’s signature speed and abilities. There's sure to be lots of twists and turns around every corner in Sonic Frontiers, and we’re excited to unveil more information about the game over the coming months."
2022 is looking to be a big year for Sonic the Hedgehog, as he'll also be getting a big-screen sequel film as well. That movie is coming out on April 8, 2022.
