The Sonic movie sequel has passed a major milestone in its production process. Director Jeff Fowler said on Twitter that filming has wrapped in Vancouver.

"Thank you to all the amazing cast/crew in this city... so much incredible talent helping make Sonic Movie 2 truly special (and spoiler alert... EPIC!)," Fowler said. You can check out Fowler's celebratory image below, which appears to have been captured from the set.

Production began in mid-March, so the shoot lasted around two months. While filming may have wrapped on Sonic 2, it's likely the film has post-production and effects work still to be completed ahead of the movie's 2022 release date.

2020's Sonic the Hedgehog became the highest-grossing video game movie of all time in the United States. Detective Pikachu, Warcraft, Rampage, and Prince of Persia: Sands of Time did better globally, but Sonic is No. 1 in the US.

Sonic 2 is scheduled to release in theaters in April 2022. It's expected to bring back Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic, while Tika Sumpter is returning as well. We don't know if Jim Carrey will be back as Dr. Robotnik or if the rumors of Tails appearing in the sequel are true.

The Sonic movie was well-loved here at GameSpot. In his Sonic movie review, Phil Hornshaw said, "As video game adaptations go, Sonic the Hedgehog is among the stronger ones. It's smart enough to stand on its own, making use of longstanding aspects of Sega's supersonic mascot and his franchise, while making sure that what really shines through are its characters."
