Solo To Have Worst Opening For A Star Wars Movie In A While But May Still Set A Record

The Han Solo origin story is tracking below the three other recent films.

Solo: A Star Wars Story, opens in theatres this weekend, and it's expected to make a mountain of money over its first weekend in the US and Canada--but not as much as the three Star Wars movies that came before it. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Solo is tracking to make between $130 million and $150 million over the upcoming four-day Memorial Day weekend. The current Memorial Day weekend record-holder is Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, which made $139.8 million over the four-day long weekend in 2007.

Solo is the first of the new Star Wars movies that releases in the summer, and it comes just five months after Star Wars: The Last Jedi came to theatres in December 2017. The first of the new films, The Force Awakens, came out in December 2015, with Rogue One following a year later before The Last Jedi premiered a year after that.

Solo is the first of the new films to not open in December, and the first to come less than a year before the previous instalment. It also could be the worst-performing of the four new movies, unless it comes in well ahead of projections. Rogue One is currently the lowest, having made $155.1 million for its opening weekend in December 2016.

The Force Awakens, which benefited massively from being the first new entry in the series in over a decade, holds the opening-weekend Star Wars record with $248 million, while The Last Jedi made $220 million for its opening weekend last year.

The Han Solo standalone movie is launching around the world this week, in markets including China. With all countries accounted for, the film is expected to make more than $300 million worldwide for its opening weekend.

All three of the new Star Wars movies went on to make more than $1 billion during their theatrical runs, so it will be interesting to see how Solo fares in the long run.

Yet this movie is going to be above the abominations thats the new trilogy and even better than rogue one. But for real the ''a star wars story'' branch is the true authentic star wars experience and is what the new trilogy shouldve been.

That's too bad. Seen it a few hours ago and it was pretty damn good. Could even make it in the top 3 for me, but I have to let it sink in first. In any case, definitely miles better than the prequels (even though that's not saying much).

I wasn't left with a bad taste in my mouth after seeing The Last Jedi, since I liked it pretty much, but to those who did, this may very well bring a smile to your face. It seemed like a really well made movie with great action scenes, mostly on-point humor, good performances, terrific overall cinematography (absolutely loved the sets, costumes and basically all the practical effects) and a lot of heart.

Hopefully it'll be as good as Rogue One and not like the new numbered SW trash movies.

@whiteheartx: Rogue One has been the only good star wars movie so far. TLJ was horrible for reasons I don't even need to get into and the one before it was ok but it relied to much on using stuff that happened in the original movie to the point it was almost a remake.

Can't wait to see it, everyone complains about the new "direction" star wars is taking but it each movie disney made was incredible. People seem to forget that out of the last 4 star wars movies George Lucas made only 1 was good. Return of the jedi, attack of the clones and revenge of the sith all were very mediocre

Thr main series has pretty much killed any interest in the spinoffs. If Han Solo is such a great character to promote in between the main series, why is 80% of the focus on new Star Wars characters that nobody likes? And an "evil villain" who gets his butt handed to him by a stormtrooper and someone who just 10 minutes prior even knew she had Force powers? And Luke Skywalker is afraid of this guy?

The main series just doesn't make any sense. They old cast is just kind of thrown in to get older viewers interested while they introduce new characters, but they have no real "evil" villain to battle and thr older cast seems lost and not focused on enough. Case in point: Chewbacca should have lots more interaction with Luke on the island. They barely talk. Instead you get two characters who go to the gambling planet and ultimately what those two do has ZERO effect on the story. They just needed to do SOMETHING, so they gave them a lame side story.

I'm done with Star Wars.

Gonna pass on this one, at least while in cinemas.

For what it's worth, in protest. Against a few of the key decisions and path they're taking for Star Wars.

One of the few Star Wars movies I really don't care to see in cinemas. Releasing one per year is turning this franchise into something like COD. It's not for art anymore, it's just a business. Mark Hamill even said something similar before the releasing of VIII

Even comparing to Marvel, where they release multiple films per year, at least Marvel put a lot of effort into their creations. You can tell. They love the content they produce, the actors love it, the passion is there. Hence why there are so many fantastic movies. It's an art-form.

Star Wars is different - it's a very obvious business right now. They're trying to produce stories out of thin air and it's just not working. It's exhausting, in fact.

@VampireLord123: They're doing pretty well, because they have the Star Wars brand behind them. Not because they are very good films, but Disney doesn't care about that, as long as it sells. They will continue to make films, without a care in the world of the quality, or whether the fans come out satisfied. There's a line in Courtney Barnett's song 'Pedestrian at Best', which pretty much sums up Disney's practices with Star Wars: 'Tell me I'm exceptional, I promise to exploit you'.

I'm burnt out by all these Star Wars movies. Which is why I am skipping Solo. Wait for it when it streams on Netflix or something.

@idakooz: It will never stream on Netflix since Disney is lunching their own streaming platform in fall of 2019 and already slowly removing all its content from other streaming companies

@duki25: Yes and they'll be coming back when that eventually fails. No one is paying just for Disney content.

There was something special about the long wait for a new Star Wars movie. Now that Disney has made the franchise become basically a Call Of Duty, it's just not the same feeling anymore.
