Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 Takes Almost 5 Minutes To Load On PS4

Being a sniper is about patience, after all.

New technology hasn't eradicated long load times in video games, and Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 is no exception. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Eurogamer has put together the video below illustrating just how long it takes to go from the main menu to the in-game action on PS4. It compares this particular instance--a wait that takes 4 minutes and 50 seconds--against the amount of time needed to do other things, such as speedrun Gone Home or complete a race in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Our reviewer has also experienced similar problems in terms of near-five-minute load times (you can look for GameSpot's full review tomorrow). These long waits are present when loading a save game from the main menu or traveling to the four different territories but are greatly reduced after a death or when fast-traveling.

The long load times can be perhaps attributed at least in part to Ghost Warrior 3 adopting an open-world style, leaving behind the more linear nature of its predecessors. Ahead of its release tomorrow, a new patch has been released that addresses a variety of technical issues, but load times don't appear to be among the problems fixed in the update.

Speaking with GameSpot, CI Games acknowledged the "long initial loading times" but said that this approach allowed it to "shorten any loading times during missions, respawns, and fast-travel to a minimum." It estimates that fast-traveling takes 4-15 seconds, loading the last checkpoint takes 15-30 seconds, and restarting a mission takes 25 seconds.

"Ultimately we feel like this inconvenience is rewarded with a comfortable experience once the game is loaded," it added.

We don't know how the game performs on PC or Xbox One. Ghost Warrior 3 launches on all three platforms on April 25, so we should know soon how the PS4 load times compare to those on other platforms.

The open world is too large. They need to break it down into smaller areas in order to avoid loading so much data into memory. However, they probably designed the game aspects (level, progression, story and gameplay) to use all the data in that level, meaning they need to load all that data anyway. So most likely they will not reduce the load time unless there is spare ram which they can use to allocate more buffer space to load data faster. This is a design oversight, or maybe done on purpose in this case, which should have been addressed at the conceptual stage of the game, before starting to program it.

@sebb: On PC there's no problem. Initial loading was 2:30, Of course i've SDD. I'm curious how this game works on PS4pro. Anyway. after first load, next one are less than 30 sec.

@vuori2003: Loading speed depends on cpu (processing speed) and ram (type DDR3/4, speed). PS4 pro's cpu is about 30% faster than PS4's according to articles online. RAM is the same (although I see online that PS4 pro has 1 extra GB of ram not sure what that's used for). So ps4 pro should take around 3.5 min for the initial load. I see how they designed for most of the content to load from memory and other variables to be defined (procedurally or randomized) and used for gameplay. But having 2 - 5 min initial load time is, to me, only worth waiting for if you plan to play the game for at least 1 hour knowing other loading times will be 30 sec. Anyway, it's a design choice but ps4 pro players will tolerate this better due to a shorter loading time. If the game is really enjoyable I would not mind waiting. After all, I did play through all of Deus ex human revolution with the game stuttering the entire time. Because the gameplay and story were enjoyable. :)

@plind12: The draw distance is massive so I guess it's just that the PS is a bit outdated. If you want to play new games you're going to have to play it on a new console or an old PC

@pasullica: If you play SGW 3 on a PS with a SSD the game will load very fast. Sure there is no comparison between a PS with SSD and a high end PC

Havent had a game take that long to load since the Amstrad CPC. I bet it takes a few seconds to load on PC.

Just a terrible engine by CI. There are many examples of large open world games that don't take near as long. Their excuses just are just masking having crap coders on their team.

How can this even be a thing? The open world craze already started last gen and games didn't have any ridiculous loading times like that back then, nothing that might even come close to this. Are they loading the whole game world now at the start with everything in it instead of streaming whatever you need when you actually need it? Maybe if the current gen came with SSD drives they might still be able to rely on streaming but I assume HDDs are way too slow for that in current games.

Well, at least reloading a checkpoint "only" takes up to 30 seconds. Totally worth it.

@anthonyp452: It seems more like around 30% in this gen, last gen you could easily get a 50% improvement though. And with ridiculous loading times like this it wouldn't even make much of a difference, you'd be doing something else anyway whether you're waiting for 5 or 3 minutes.

I'm more bothered by repeated 30 second loading times during games, than by one 5 minute waiting time at the beginning and then no loading times at all.

I'm all up for waiting longer at the beginning to reduce load times in-game,

but these in-game load time are nowhere near good either.

Basically you just f***ed up and there's no upside.

I'm loading the game right now on my Xbox One. I'm also going to keep writing until the loading stops, so there will be an abrupt end to this conversation. I'm also timing the load and I'll put the allotted time at the end.

Anyway I'm using an external SSD for a little speed. Still loading. Unfortunately USB 3.0 does bottleneck because it can't transfer the full speed of the SSD.

This is going to be interesting to see how many paragraphs I can write before I'm in. So maybe 2 minutes have passed and I'm still loading. I'll bet some people who buy a hard copie of SE3 will return the game thinking that their copy is broken due to the load times.

Donald Trump is the man by the way! Kim Jung Un's secret weapon is talking too much. What a fat bastard he is, I'll bet he has a nuke implanted in his belly in case he gets captured. Remember James Franco mocking the fat kid in "The Interview?" lol!

Anyway it should be starting anytime, I really hope, this is horrendous, Ghost Recon had way better loads. Shit I could have made a sandwich and poured a glass (4:14)

@wrestlingdude: It's not USB 3.0 that's the bottleneck, it's the console's hardware. I think Eurogamer or one of their sister sites made a comparison video a while ago for SSD vs HDD on a PS4 Pro, which now has SATA3 support, and it showed that even with an HDD loading times were improved compared to the standard PS4 and there was barely a difference between standard and PS4 Pro when a SSD was installed. Like up to 3 seconds difference for games with long loading times like Witcher 3.

That's shockingly bad. I wonder if an SSD would decrease the load times? Hmmmm hopefully someone could put it to the test.

@illage2: It would. There are some videos that compare loading times and it seems like you can get around a 30% improvement in this gen on average, last gen it was up to 50% for some games. I've had a SSD in my PS4 for a while now so i can't really compare it anymore to what it's like with an HDD but there's definitely a noticeable improvement when you first put it in. Even the PS4 menu and everything in it is loading faster, generally more responsive.

@sellingthings: Look it up instead of making stuff up. Up to 3 seconds is the difference between a standard PS4 and PS3 Pro when both have an SSD installed but on a standard one the difference between HDD and SSD is significant.

If the initial load time is 5 minutes every load time after that should be less than 20 seconds AT MOST. But then they estimate that they can be up to 30 seconds? And then the game is reportedly a buggy mess on top of that with ugly graphics and mediocre gameplay. Why would that be worth waiting five minutes for?

In 5 minutes you can scratch your nuts, smoke a cone, grab a drink and before you know it you are playing with no further loads ;)

I think i must be the only person on the planet who wouldnt be bothered by this. If they were 5 min loads in between game sessions that would a bit too much, but at the start only isnt a big issue.

Hopefully the Scorpio version sees an improvement with load times and other things. Turning it into an open-world level design is a poor choice as well imo. Game should've kept the linear design. Everything doesn't have to be open-world. Goodness..

@dudebropartyyo: But then you're not playing the game. If I sit down to play a game then I wanna play the game, not have to go for a walk with the dog until it's done loading.

And up to 30 seconds during gameplay is standard for loading times in this gen. Those lengthy initial loading times didn't eliminate any of those, they just made them bareable so you wouldn't have to wait for 2+ mins each time you load a checkpoint or quicktravel. Which is likely what would have been the case with this game.

@Atzenkiller: The point is, its 5 min before you start, so you dont have to walk your dog until you finished playing for the day ;)

Im re playing some classic games latelly and this load time is nothing compared to some of those, but i entertain my self while waiting.

Hey look it dont matter, its different these days, no one is happy with anything. Not like the old days, yes people still complained about this and that but nothing even close to these days :)
