Sniper Elite announced

Wanadoo and Rebellion are working on a World War II-themed stealth game for the PC, PS2, and Xbox.

Wanadoo has today released the first information on Sniper Elite for the PC, PlayStation 2, and Xbox. The game, which is currently in development at UK-based Rebellion, is set in 1945 Berlin and will see players assuming the role of an elite German sniper named Peter Mauer who has been recruited by the OSS (which later became the CIA) to carry out missions against SMERSH agents in exchange for a US passport.

Sniper Elite will feature a combination of first- and third-person gameplay, with players being required to demonstrate cunning and tactical thinking, as well as a steady trigger finger, if they're to succeed. The single-player game will consist of around 10 missions, and it will be complemented by a two-player split-screen cooperative mode and a number of multiplayer and online modes. Sniper rifles will, of course, make up much of the arsenal in the game, but other weapons available to players will include pistols, grenades, knives, stick bombs, machine guns, and flamethrowers.

Sniper Elite is currently scheduled for release toward the end of this year. We'll bring you more information on the game as soon as it becomes available, but in the meantime, be sure to check out the first screenshots from all three versions released today.
