Sniper Elite 4's PS4 Pro Frame Rate Reaches Double Xbox One's, Says Report

Sniper Elite 4 Pro.

Sniper Elite 4 is out now on PS4, Xbox One, and PC--but how do the consoles fare when running Rebellion's latest marksman sim?

Well according to Digital Foundry, the two consoles and Sony's upgraded hardware, PS4 Pro, perform quite differently. The site says that while PS4 Pro's frame rate is unlocked and mostly hangs around the 45-55 FPS region, the regular PS4 and Xbox One don't quite reach the same heights.

The standard PS4's frame rate is mostly contained within the 30-40 FPS marks, but Xbox One's can't get above 30. Sniper Elite 4 is capped at 30 on Xbox One, but Microsoft's console frequently dips below that mark, and even into the high teens in particularly demanding scenes.

All three consoles render at 1080p, says Digital Foundry--including the PS4 Pro at max settings, even when connected to a 4K TV. Otherwise, the three consoles broadly look the same, save for reduced texture pop-in on PS4 Pro. Check out Digital Foundry's full video above.

Developer Rebellion detailed Sniper Elite 4's PS4 Pro support earlier in February. The company said Sony's upgraded console would deliver an "enhanced frame rate, improved lighting, and faster loading times." Rebellion also revealed details about its game's season pass details--get the lowdown here.

In our Sniper Elite 4 review, we called the game "a natural progression for the series," which is now "living up to its long-standing potential." If you're curious about other critics' thoughts on the sniping game, check out this review roundup.

OKAY.........? And what about the Xbox S? hmmmmmm DF suddenly forgot that the Fat Xbone is not even being made anymore yet want to choose that to make a comparison to PsPro? Further evidence that DF is paid or in partnership with sony. This crap is a complete joke.

@iaruelas: Xbox one S aka Xbox one SLIM, is an OG xbox one that's 40% smaller. Even MS themselves said you won't see any difference in performance between the slim and the og. Are you mad they didn't compare the ps4 slim also?

Avatar image for sodapoppimpski
SodApOpPIMPski

@joshrmeyer: like others said but it does run better than the OG xbox. In fact games compared on the OG x1 to the x1s show improvement head to head on a lot of games.

Avatar image for joshrmeyer
JoshRMeyer

@sodapoppimpski: Yup, that extra .09 teraflops makes a difference. I've seen the reports and yes, there's a very slight difference on a few games. My point again was, it's still an xbox one, it's not the scorpio(or anything remotely close to the Pro) as some people make it out to be.

@joshrmeyer: if people are trying to make the 1s power boost out to be like ps4pro or Scorpio they're morons

Avatar image for suicidesn0wman

@joshrmeyer: The X1S actually does have a little more power than the base X1. It was necessary to facilitate UHD Blu Ray. Generally this only helps increase the resolution on games using Dynamic Scaling with little effect on FPS.

Avatar image for joshrmeyer
JoshRMeyer

@suicidesn0wman: Yeah I know... it's like .1 teraflop difference. Supposively reserved for HDR, but like you said, it's had an unexpected performance bump in dynamic scaling for resolution. I'm just amazed that people think the S is some kind of huge bump in performance. It is a much better machine as far as appearance, HDR, and 4k playback goes. But only HDR has any affect on gaming, and definitely not on fps. I had to call out the guy for saying DF is in some partnership with Sony lol. They're the first ones that showed the little differences in performance between xbox one and the S.

@joshrmeyer: I think most of the media has a bias that leans heavily towards Sony's side. Too many discrepancies, too many questionable statements or articles. It is very clear on this site for sure.

I think DF wants to be objective, but for the most part they do pander to the large and vocal PS crowd like many other sites. Less driven by games than potential ad revenue. Though again, this site is very clear on their purpose, DF walks the tight line and occasionally missteps.

I do like DF though, for the most part they tell it like it is.

Avatar image for joshrmeyer

@suicidesn0wman: Probably.. I'm pretty biased, not a fan of MS. But I'm sure you know that lol. This site is definitely pro ps, but it may have more to do with the amount of ps users vs xbox users. They definitely pick on MS for clicks.... maybe that's why I like this site more than others ;)

Avatar image for suicidesn0wman

@joshrmeyer: Yeah, I know you're pro ps, but you're reasonable and respect peoples opinions. Wish more people would show the same amount of respect for a fellow gamer as you do. Would sure make this a better, healthier community.

@suicidesn0wman: Well to be honest, I'm a super competitive person. Sometimes its good, sometimes a flaw. I root (?) For my Bucanneers, Gators, and Lightning. Not sure why, but I'm definitely not alone. I think everyone needs something to root for... maybe consoles are some people's "sports team". Thanks for the compliment;)

@joshrmeyer: I make fun of my co-worker for being a Packers fan all the time. Even though his team destroys my Bears almost every season. The difference is I don't call him an idiot for living in Chicago and not liking the Bears. Competition is great, it's what drives us to improve in every facet in life. But it shouldn't come at the expense of another. That's my point.

@sellingthings: I think you mistake fans for fanboys. Not everyone who enjoys a platform or any other product is a fanboy. There's a big difference between being a fan of a product and telling people why you love said product than there is being a fanboy of a product and telling people why you hate the product they enjoy and how stupid they are for not conforming to your personal preferences.

If we all respected each others differences we could collectively enjoy gaming a whole lot more.

Consider this, if I wanted to know if a game on the PlayStation 4 was any good, I'd ask someone like @joshrmeyer because I know I'll get a rational response from him, an honest response. The same can not be said for any of these fanboys whose sole purpose on this site is to bash the Xbox. In all honesty I can't even begin to trust that they even PLAY video games, much less have the ability to recommend a game to anyone.

I really can't see any scenario when the fanboy is a benefit to gaming in any form. They're not hardcore fans, they're fanatical and their extreme views are unhealthy for us all.

Avatar image for suicidesn0wman

@sellingthings: How many people who are actually in the industry sound like the people we run into on here?

None that I can think of.

Maybe they were fanboys at some point, but eventually you have to grow up, otherwise we'd all be sitting at the playground arguing over whose father made the best pancakes.

Is PS4 Pro just 45-55fps and 1080p only? Not even an "upscalled 4k", or locked 60 fps? What a failure. That must be a joke.

Avatar image for drprophecy
DrProphecy

@Zicoroen: Game is 1080p and Pro will upscale it to 4k when played on 4k TV.

I could be wrong but isn't downscaling better than upscaling? I understand 4k data takes more space than 1080, but some games aren't even that huge in size and still upscale.

Avatar image for joshrmeyer
JoshRMeyer

@Zicoroen: Anything ran on a 4k tv is gonna be upscaled to fit 4k. Not sure if this will be the ps4 pro or the tv doing it though.

Avatar image for xcrimsonxsynx
XCrimsonxSynX

@joshrmeyer: So everything you play on a 4k tv is in upscaled 4k? LOL! Thats hilarious...

Avatar image for joshrmeyer
JoshRMeyer

@xcrimsonxsynx: What's halarious is how you think somehow pixels disappear when using a 4k tv. If it didn't upscale the picture, it'd have black boxes around the picture. Did you think 4k tvs magically change into a 1080p tv when that's what is inputed? As snowman said, it's not nearly as well as the Pro does it with the checkboarding method. Not sure if xbox one S uses that method but it should still be better than a standard tv upscaler.

Avatar image for suicidesn0wman
suicidesn0wman

@xcrimsonxsynx: Although the statement is true, most 4k TVs have the most basic upscaler available and come no where close to the quality of the upscalers used by Pro and X1S.

Really? The 4TF console has twice the power of the 1.4TF console? You don't say! <insert Nick Cage Meme here>

GameSpot's attempt to turn every article into a flame war is pathetic.

Avatar image for joshrmeyer

@suicidesn0wman: Actually isn't the CPU mostly responsible for fps? Xbox one and ps pro aren't too far off in that catagory. This makes me wonder if they found a way to use more of the GPU for fps, instead of just resolution increase. Isn't this what everyone's asking for? A 1080p game running smoothly at close to 60 fps.

Avatar image for suicidesn0wman
suicidesn0wman

@joshrmeyer: Neither is 'responsible' for anything specific. The CPU is generally the bottleneck with the current consoles, but having a stronger gpu and more RAM go a long way towards improving frame rates. Plus this game doesn't hit 60fps, it's 45-55 which many claim isn't very pleasing to the eyes.

The more I think about this it sounds like the same story we went through with Homefront: The Revolution. This game might not be good until 6 months after it releases.

Edit: I would add that I am by no means an expert on hardware these days. I haven't had to deal with hw reqs. When I was a game dev I never built anything that demanded much from the hw, and I haven't built a game in almost 7 years. Although I'd love to build a game, I'm pretty focused on web development these days.

Avatar image for joshrmeyer
JoshRMeyer

@suicidesn0wman: Yeah I'm no expert either... it just seemed like all that extra power that Pro uses and Scorpio will use was going mostly for resolution only. I guess now that I think about it, there's a few games with options for fps or resolution. I'll still be using a 1080p tv for a while so this is somewhat exciting news... although this game doesn't really excite me.

Avatar image for suicidesn0wman

@joshrmeyer: I'm planning on getting a 4k tv for Scorpio later this year, not sure about PS Pro yet, might wait until next year just to make sure they're not going to sneak out a PS5 to keep MS under their foot. I can see Scorpio's announcement being the start of an arms race and Pro just isn't good enough if a PS5 is right around the corner.

Avatar image for joshrmeyer
JoshRMeyer

@suicidesn0wman: I agree. If the Pro is available for $299 black friday or before the holidays, I'll probably get it, mostly now for the boost mode, then later for whatevers in 4k, although I think it's underpowered for that. PS5 is probably right around the corner.... well 2 years off. If scorpio can somehow launch at $399, I'll probably jump on that for multiplats and just use my ps4 for exclusives. E3 can't come soon enough!

Avatar image for suicidesn0wman
suicidesn0wman

@joshrmeyer: Yes, pricing is the key. I think Scorpio will release with two versions, a 1TB for $399 and a 2 or 4TB for $499. PS5 in 2018/19 for the same price, 8TF minimum, 4k/30 will be the norm.

Well, Sniper Elite 4 has its own problems, being it's just not a very good game, certainly as compared to it's predecessors. So i guess idk why this game of all games, would be used.

Saying that though, this "60 frames" argument, seems to only be something hardcore gamers are obsessed with. They make up only a very small number of the gaming community.

Talking to friends and family who play games on consoles (mostly casuals who play a half hour a day if that), don't even know what the hell i'm talking about with this, or even give a wit about it lol. I mean this is nerd crap.

And so i would think whether it's PS Pro, or the Scorpio, they're just not going to be very big sellers, being there really is no rationale to buy them for the average gamer.

And so i guess my point is why they seem to be putting emphasis on things that most will not play, instead of putting emphasis on maybe putting out better games in general, which it seems SE4 should have done.

Why do so many PS4 games run without a cap? If you cant hit a consistent 60 you should be locked to 30, anything else is just a tearing stuttering mess.
