SNES Classics Finally Coming to 3DS Virtual Console

Gaming on the go!

While the Nintendo 3DS virtual console has been filled with great nostalgia-filled entries over the years, there's been one gaping hole: the SNES. You can play SNES games on the Wii U's Virtual Console, but not on Nintendo's handheld. That's changing today.

Nintendo announced during today's Direct presentation that a slew of SNES classics are coming to the New 3DS Virtual console (note, this update does not apply to the non-New 3DS). Following today's Nintendo Direct presentation, you'll be able to purchase the SNES versions of F-Zero, Pilotwings, and Super Mario World.

While Nintendo didn't share prices, they will likely be similar to current prices for SNES titles on the Wii U Virtual Console.

More titles will roll out in the following weeks, including

These versions of the game will also include a "perfect pixel" mode, which retains the original resolution of the SNES games, but on the 3DS screen. Nintendo did not clarify during the Direct whether there would be an alternative "non-pixel perfect" mode.

If you haven't yet played Earthbound, this will be the perfect chance to catch up with the cult-classic series. You should catch up with the other good games on this list too...but, seriously, you should play Earthbound.

While it's still possible Nintendo is lying or not telling us the whole truth, there is an article on Game Informer where Nintendo does say they needed the better hardware to get emulation up to their polished standards of quality control.

I always felt like Nintendo was leaving money on the table not bringing these games over. Glad to see they finally are. Going to buy Earthbound as soon as I finish the endless slog that is Xenoblade Chronicles 3D.

@malachi: Just shame it is old stuff we already played. Love all the new systems made to play old games. Not really going forward.

Hope they bring Dragonball Z: Hyper Dimension.

Still one of my favourite games for the SNES, even though after leaving Japan it only made it to France and I believe Spain.

LOL I have to buy the new 3ds in order to play them? No thanks, maybe when it actually gets more exclusives than the years it's been out.

Any word on whether there's cross platform support? Really don't want to buy Super Metroid again when I'm using the same damn Nintendo ID for both devices.

@Dragon_Nexus: This is a big sticking point for me. I've already bought these games on Wii U. How can Nintendo justify full price twice? Double dipping is not acceptable.

@Redsyrup: If it was a different version, like if they'd put some effort into 3Ding Super Metroid so the sprite layers were at different depths, I'd totally understand.

If it's literally the same game, that's just greed and completely anti-consumer. Which...is kinda Nintendo's thing these days, sadly. Despite the quality of their games, they're still very, very japanese.

@Redsyrup: That's how I feel about the premium subscription fees for online multiplayer on other consoles. I have to wonder if Nintendo wasn't too happy about people not getting Wii U's and paying a smaller upgrade fees for those games.

Gamespot missed out one important piece of information which Nintendo did say in the direct......These are exclusive to the NEW 3DS CONSOLES ONLY! So you are out of luck if you have the older 3DS model or 2DS.

@malachi: Wait... So let me get this straight... "Normal" 3DS can run GB Advance games, but catn't run SNes games? So GB Advance hardware was less powerfun than SNes? Surely that cannot be...

@malachi: no way... I don't think thats right..theres just no way they'd ignore the original 3ds owners like that.

@WhoIsTheDrizzle: Well most 3DS owners are probably kids or people young enough to not care about SNES classics. Now there are still a substantial number of older diehard Nintendo fans who might be left out by this, but they're diehards so they're probably running out to buy a New 3DS right now just to play SNES games on it :).

On a more general note, that's how Nintendo is really. They have a "nice company" image but I think they're actually quite "scummy", they are always looking to exploit, whether it's fanboys who they know will gratefully gobble up any scraps they're thrown, or casuals whose lack of knowledge/research they love to exploit.

Donkey Kong Country 1/2 (my first and second video game), Mario Kart and Super Mario World are awesome! Never played Super Metroid, F-Zero and Earthbound, though I heard they are great.

@cboye18: Earthbound is pretty good in my opinion. Worth the premium on Wii U, despite some audio changes. They did adjust the graphics a little so some of the PSI animations aren't as harsh on the eyes, which is a plus complared to the original. The environments and story also take inspiration from a modern day world at the time of the original release.

Pixel perfect mode will probably mean an incorrect aspect ratio as the SNES used a non-square pixel mode and the 3DS screen has square pixels
