SNES Classic Pre-orders From Walmart Canceled, Here's Why [UPDATE]

Pre-orders continue to be canceled.

Update 2: In what may be another glitch, some customers who received the email saying their pre-order would be canceled have now received another, much different email. This one is an automated email stating that the delivery date has been moved to September 29, a change from the previous date in early October. (The SNES Classic officially launches on September 29.) It's possible this is simply an accident related to the cancellation process, but for now, the uncertainty continues.

Update: It appears that more--and seemingly all--SNES Classic Edition pre-orders have been canceled, including those that were made shortly after it first went live. Walmart is sending affected customers (including several of us here at GameSpot) the following email:

"Thank you for your interest in the Super Nintendo Entertainment System – Classic Edition. As you are aware, this is a highly sought after console that will launch later this fall. Unfortunately, due to a technical glitch, the Super Nintendo Classic Edition was mistakenly made available last Friday evening ahead of the official release date. We, regrettably, will have to cancel this item on your order. We know that this is incredibly disappointing to you, and we’re truly sorry for this mistake."

It goes on to note that credit cards have not been charged, and those who paid with a gift card or PayPal will receive refunds. It also encourages customers to continue checking the Walmart website's SNES Classic page for further updates regarding possible pre-orders, although it doesn't confirm that these will be available.

"I do hope you'll give us another chance to earn back your business," it concludes.

Original Story: One of the biggest news stories last week was that Walmart had become the first retailer to make the SNES Classic available for pre-order in the US. Now, it appears that the company may have been a bit premature in putting them on sale.

Some people who managed to pre-order the console are reporting that Walmart has canceled their purchase. It's not happening to everyone; at least two GameSpot employees haven't had theirs canceled yet. But there are enough reports of it that it seems to be a trend. After a couple of days of confusion among purchasers, Walmart today gave an official reason for the cancellations via its Twitter account: the console was put on sale sooner than intended.

This reason lines up with screenshots floating around that show people's online chats with Walmart employees. These employees have stated that the company experienced a system glitch, resulting in the SNES Classic being made available too soon.

SNES Classic pre-orders will be available again; a Target representative told Polygon that it will have them available "at a later date." There's no word yet from Nintendo or other retailers when, exactly, that date will be.

The SNES Classic costs $80 and features 21 of the Super Nintendo's best games. One of those games is Star Fox 2, a title that was never officially released. You can see all of the SNES Classic games here.

Only console that needs a remake is 64 due to how hard it is to emulate.

Am I the only one left who has the backbone to raise hell about stuff like this. People, you got screwed over royally, but everyone seems content to just sit back and let it slide. How many more times are we going to let these companies get away with a simple "sorry" for screwing over the customer. Every one of these people should have been given a $25 gift card to use when the system truly becomes available. As it stands, Wal Mart, and Nintendo for that matter, feel no pain for doing this to you. I personally did not reserve the system, nor will I. Nintendo's antics lost me at the GameCube launch. Although, the rest of you really need to grow a set. Stop being so weak. Frankly, the same should go for game producers and publishers as well. If they release a broken game that we pay full price for, there should be some sort of retribution. THEY should feel the pain, not the customers. The whole game industry is azz backwards. Stop encouraging it!! We deserve better. MUCH better.

@utopia6: Agreed 100%. I was lucky enough to get a preorder successfully and be charged from my debit card. The fact that they were allowed to tell me tough luck and remove my order without any reparation is ridiculous.

Now's the time for people to reject this artificial demand BS and buy a real SNES. Get it chipped or modded and play it the way you want to. No more retail victimization by Nintendo.

If you had your pre-order cancelled, I highly recommend you call and complain. It won't get you your SNES Classic, but, if you're willing to be an obnoxious ass, Walmart is pretty good about buckling and giving out gift cards like candy just to make people go away.

I'm not surprised that Walmart would do something like this. I've had this happen to me before on limited or collector's edition products. Better to shop elsewhere or risk being disappointed.

Here I was thinking it was golden, because it was four days that I heard nothing about a pre-order. Well, unless they reactivate my pre-order, they aren't getting my business again.

I had enough and bought a Retron 5. Don't do it. It works fine for NES and Genesis, but there is a lot of input lag with SNES.

Avatar image for utopia6

@superklyph:Well, there's your problem. Should have picked up a Retro Trio. WAY better than Retron. Works perfect will all my SNES games.

9/29 is my birthday...I'm going to do terrible Black Friday style things to make sure I get one of these damn SNES consoles...while I'm at it everyone should know that a patent has already been filed for an N64 mini controller, indicating that an N64 classic is already in the works. https://apptrigger.com/2017/07/20/nintendo-64-controller-patent-hints-upcoming-n64-mini/

It does seem to be a right royal F'ck up this, both Walmart and general supply.

Even if they make more than the NES classic, I'm sure there will be more disappointed people than last time.

They should release a digital bundle of both on the switch in the future

@haveringpish: FINALLY.....Someone else willing to take a stance. EVERYONE should be!! Can't believe how people are just willing to stand there and take it up the azz for a stupid system. Where's your self respect people. Where's your dignity?

Avatar image for CyberEarth

@haveringpish: It's Walmart's issue, not Nintendo's. Walmart is the one that can't react to limited supply. Everyone knew it was limited, yet Walmart basically held out a sign that said "PREORDER HERE, NO LIMIT". What did they honestly expect? I have friends that said they ordered 4 of them. Each.

The excuse Walmart gave is bullshit, too.

@CyberEarth: I managed to get 3 successful pre-orders - I didn't use Walmart !

Well, today (July 26th at 2pm) my pre-order for the SNES Classic at Walmart was canceled!

Just received the same form letter via e-mail from them. By the way, I had only ordered 1 unit.

Looks like they will cancel ALL preorders, what a bummer!

Avatar image for saicam53
saicam53

Walmart has not cancelled any order due to overselling. If you have a cancellation, it's likely due to a payment issue, being at the end of availbility and all the crashing your payment might not of went through correctly. If you are concerned that your order will be cancelled, there has been no news to indicate that it will be (unless there is a payment or shipping address problem).

Theres also this tweet from walmart as well:

Avatar image for CyberEarth

@saicam53: Gotta say, this is 100% patently false. Walmart flat-out oversold and is reneging on all of their pre-orders.

@NintendoAmerica again messing up hard with low-no supply of #snesclassic I hope someday people wake up to this BS and abandon #nentendo

@NintendoAmerica pulling this for almost 40 years since the nes days. Either they are doing it on purpose or are incompetent #snesclassic

Seriously @NintendoAmerica fans deserve better than this constant abuse of supposed "we can't keep up with demand" #snesclassic #nintendo

For once #nintendo fans don't put up with this. Call them out, boycott them till they stop doing this to you #snesclassic #nintendo
