SNES Classic Edition Pre-orders Available Right Now In The US [UPDATE: SOLD OUT]

Here's your chance to secure one.

Update: Sure enough, the SNES Classic has sold out. We'll report back as other retailers bring their SNES Classic pre-orders online, though keep in mind we don't yet know how soon those will be coming.

Original Story: The Super NES Classic Edition is available for pre-order right now in the United States. You can place an order through Walmart's website, but hurry--it's possible they will sell out quickly.

Now Playing: 6 Games Missing From The SNES Classic Edition

The micro console was announced In June and a round of pre-orders became available in Europe soon after. However, there has been frustratingly little word on how or when those in the US would be able to pre-order. If you miss out on this Walmart availability--or simply prefer to shop elsewhere--it seems likely that other retailers will offer pre-orders prior to the system's release on September 29.

No Caption Provided

For $80, the SNES Classic includes a total of 21 of the Super Nintendo's best games. One of those games is Star Fox 2, a title that was never officially released to the public. You can see all of the SNES Classic games here.

Last year's NES Classic Edition was notoriously difficult to come by. It sold out well in advance of its launch, and additional shipments were gone virtually the second they became available. This resulted in prices skyrocketing on the secondhand market. Nintendo ultimately discontinued the system before demand could be satisfied--a situation that many fear will also be the case with the SNES Classic. Nintendo has already said its current plans are only to offer the system until the end of 2017, but it claims it will offer "significantly more" units this time around.

I see an instant replay on the SNES classic, the scalpers will get a hold of them and sell them at higher prices than the MSRP. Go to Newegg or Walmart, etc and see how much one cost.

and I've been called an idiot by so many when I pointed out the fact that gamestop saying they wouldn't take preorder didn't meant every other retailers would do the same... dozens of people on multiple gaming sites literally called me all kind of names, saying I didn't knew anything and it was obvious there would never be any preorders (even if amazon already announced their preorder as soon as when the snes classic was revealed) since everyone was doing whatever was dictated by gamestop...

@beuneus12: why did you had to call me an animal? do I keep following everyone of your post just to call you names? no. Why? Because calling people names because they were right is pretty stupid. now act like an adult, say you're sorry and also say you won't call people name again when they are right.

@timmyp1982: Absolutely but i think you know what i meant with that, an emulator with limited amount of games, unless someone hacks it. And if they do hack it, it will be even more irritating for people who want it but wont be able to find one due to shortage and then people who bought two or more will be laughing and selling it online for 3 to 4 times the price.

I almost feel like a lot of this hype is fake or maybe Nintendo really knows what its doing (from a greedy business point of view) & is capitalizing on a niche market.

1 of these things wouldn’t even give me any nostalgic pleasure because I’d just feel like I’m playing some fake generic shit. Only way I’d be tempted to play some these games is if they were conveniently ready for download on Switch.

@d_: yeah... the hype is totally fake. Nintendo is paying people to preorder their consoles and buy them all after release. This is why the NES, SNES, N64, Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, DS, 3DS, Wii and Switch sold that many units. Because Nintendo is paying people to act like they are hyped and to buy their product. Nobody is actually buying Nintendo on their own will and desire. It totally make sense and explains very well Nintendo is dead since the SNES.

@heqteur: In case it wasn’t obvious enough I wasn’t really being serious in that regard.. & while I wouldn’t call it fake or that extreme it can certainly be exaggerated in some instances & people who’re affiliated in 1 way or another spreading the “good word” or building hype isn’t that uncommon.

But just saying.. I don’t doubt for a second in what the masses will blow their dough on, I don’t have room to talk.

Just surprised I don’t see more ppl that share a similar mentality.. that this is garbage & is only slowing down these games & many others from becoming available on the eShop, thus making a much bigger library of games accessible to the Switch, eliminating the need for 5 different consoles, or starving for games.

Even though it would’ve made them plenty of money I guess Nintendo thought it wasn’t enough to keep them relevant.

@d_: so sorry. you're right: everyone on internet can read other people's mind. Why didn't I realize you were being sarcastic even though there were no kind of smiley or indications that you meant the opposite of what you actually wrote. This is seriously dumb of me to not be aware of what the entire population of Earth has on its mind. I'll make sure to not forget about that.

@wr3ckloose_: Shhhhhhh! Or the authorities will think all Gamespot users are illegal downloading criminals. ROMs are great though, especially when Nintendos ports of old games on their new systems are overpriced and have awful input lag. Nintendo have done great things for the video game industry in the past but now they are a terrible, terrible company. So out of touch with their fan base its not even funny. Mind you so are Sony!

At this rate I'd feel more inclined to just eBay the original Snes and a good HDMI converter.

Selling out of finished stock is one thing, but pre-orders? Nintendo just can't find a production line theses days?

this is fracking retarded, they should allow stores to take all the pre-orders they want, just limit eh 1 per person and say okay we'll fill these orders......

and keep taking orders for like a month 4 weeks then cut off and if there's more demand after that open orders back up for another week and be done.....honestly E-bay should be pressured not to allow users to sell these things at least not for the first 2 years or so....

cus if you do as I say you pretty much eliminate the problem.....but either way there's millions if not billions of people who would want this thing....they need to treat this like an actual console launch.....

Still hundreds of NES Classics available online for over $250. I'm fine with them staying there for the rest of time too. This kind of shitshow doesn't deserve my money.

@GabrielX-X: people want the actual item, we want the actual box and all the games in the collection, not just a illegal collection of games and maybe a emulator that's more problems than it's worth.....

I've messed with every single emulator out there and none of em are all that great.....all have issues with accepting controllers or flickering or stuttering or half a dozen other technical issues....

oh your way sounds simple to say but in practice NO.....

@darthrevenx: The NES, SNES, Mega Drive (Genesis), Master System and Arcade emulators I've tried have all worked without a single issue. The only emulators I've had any issues with are the N64 emulators (due to the N64 being a quirky system and the existing emulators dependence on plugins for particular games to run their best) and the Sega Saturn (due to the fact that the emulator was under developed when I tried it in comparison to the more popular emulators for the systems I've mentioned above). The rest of this comment is going to be my stance on retro gaming and emulators and is not directed specifically at you. Feel free to stop reading now if you aren't interested (same goes for anyone else reading this) as it's fairly long.

I see emulators as being important due to the fact that: 1) Nintendo will only bother licensing games they see as being worthy of "classic" status and 2) Games that can no longer be sold due to expired/disputed/lost copyright will remain available to play (and more importantly from a historical standpoint, won't be totally forgotten about).

I pay for all my current games and don't support piracy for the purpose of "trying out" a game as some people do. However, when it comes to classic games on systems that are no longer produced I see emulators as being incredibly important because the video game industry doesn't make much of an effort to preserve the back catalogue of games unless they can dub it "classic" and re-sell it to people. Nintendo have made their money many times over from games like Mario etc, so I have no problem when people turn to emulators when 1) Games are no longer sold due to licensing issues or 2) Companies employ tactics like artificially limiting the quantity of a product so that they can charge a high price (especially when, like I said earlier, they've already made their money many times over from the original release and subsequent re-releases of the software).

Issues with licensing and companies deciding what is worth their while making available is also the reason I strongly oppose services like Playstation NOW and the proposal that one day all gaming becomes a cloud based service. If a game is not deemed popular enough or licensing expires/is disputed/is no longer possible (sports games and racing games with car brands are the worst for this) it will not be made available on such a service. They'll limit our choice to what they decide is worthwhile (profitable for them). Let's pretend that your favourite game is one that is fairly obscure, an old sports game you used to love to play with friends/family or an old racing game with licensed cars (ever noticed how the original NFS games aren't available digitally despite being classics?). They won't dedicate server resources to something that barely anyone plays and they can't or won't pay to re-licence content with branding/real player names. That means that your favourite game could potentially become unplayable and there's not a damn thing you can do about it because all our power to preserve/retain games has been stripped away from us.

@StokeMeAClipper: 100% agree regarding ROMs.

I'd never use a cloud based service,blasphemy!!!

I am worried for the future of gaming,I like physical discs and it seems they're trying to force digital to save on manufacturing costs. Shadow Warrior 2 on ps4 got a limited physical release and I wasnt quick eniough so now my only option is to download, which I only do if theres no other option. A bit off topic I know.

@noones-my-name: I too am worried about the future of gaming and make posts in various comments sections from time to time. Unfortunately it seems that many people don't care, either because they've not thought about the implications of digital only distribution and/or gaming becoming a cloud based service in future or they are only interested in current/future games.

I do like to buy physical releases but even physical media isn't insurance against lack of availability in future. Physical media and hardware in general degrades over time either because of wear and tear or just due to the nature of the materials used (for example CD rot or in the case of something like a controller, rubber naturally perishes over time and in the case of controllers that require batteries, batteries have a limited shelf life). Eventually games and hardware become innaccessible to all but hardcore collectors who pay thousands of pounds/euros/dollars for items they'll possibly never play/use because it would lose its value. I collect games to play them, not because I think I'll be able to make some money from them in a few years or just for the sake of collecting them.

My concern is more about games remaining playable long term, either for people that played them the first time around and would like to play them again/continue being able to play them or so that new generations of people that are interested in gaming history can still experience them. Up until now, ROM and emulator communities have been able to preserve games and keep them playable. As time goes on it is becoming more and more difficult for them to do so and cloud based gaming would be the final nail in the coffin lid of such efforts.

To some people it isn't a big deal and they see video games as a way to pass the time for a couple of hours. To me, games represent culture and are as important as art, music and literature.

Note: I've edited the last paragraph as it didn't communicate what I meant effectively and elaborating on those points would have been too time consuming.

@darthrevenx: that console aint orginal too, they are emulated. Also the games will work with black bars. But with raspberry pi, you can add custom overlays and bezzels with awsome art styles. Also the best emulators installed that works without any issues.

@GabrielX-X: Nintendo is making it, it's an official Nintendo product, that makes it legit......

see I think that Sega Genesis Flashback thing might be a better setup cus you can play actual Genesis games on it as well as the preloaded games making it far more attractive plus I bet they don't create a forced system shortage like Nintendo.....

what Nintendo is doing is saying to billions of fans come get our thing then releasing only 100 of em if that then wondering why they have an issue.....

I already got a bunch of emulators on my PC and all the roms and none of the emulators are worth a damn.....pfft

@JoInfo: Totally agree!! I was damn lucky enough to find a console/extra controller bundle new for a little over $160 in March earlier this year. You can't imagine the sigh of relief I had when a month later it was announced that the NES Classic was being discontinued and online prices for the console began to soar again.

It's amazing how Nintendo, a large multi-billion corporation, still doesn't understand the concept of supply and demand. Bet there's only 10 of them per store.

@xenomorphalien: Actually I think this shows Nintendo clearly understands supply and demand. Constricting supply can actually increase demand. In other words Nintendo knows they won't lose money, there will be no oversupply the demand due to contracted supply will make sure this is no extra stock, in that scenario sales forecast can be assured to be true. This is very useful in a business sense when profit is often difficult to forecast with a high level of certainty. This kind of product provides a baseline assured profit that can be predicted, which again is useful for a big business like Nintendo in the greater scheme of themes.
