SNES Classic Edition Pre-orders Available Right Now In The US [UPDATE: SOLD OUT]

Here's your chance to secure one.

Update: Sure enough, the SNES Classic has sold out. We'll report back as other retailers bring their SNES Classic pre-orders online, though keep in mind we don't yet know how soon those will be coming.

Original Story: The Super NES Classic Edition is available for pre-order right now in the United States. You can place an order through Walmart's website, but hurry--it's possible they will sell out quickly.

The micro console was announced In June and a round of pre-orders became available in Europe soon after. However, there has been frustratingly little word on how or when those in the US would be able to pre-order. If you miss out on this Walmart availability--or simply prefer to shop elsewhere--it seems likely that other retailers will offer pre-orders prior to the system's release on September 29.

No Caption Provided

For $80, the SNES Classic includes a total of 21 of the Super Nintendo's best games. One of those games is Star Fox 2, a title that was never officially released to the public. You can see all of the SNES Classic games here.

Last year's NES Classic Edition was notoriously difficult to come by. It sold out well in advance of its launch, and additional shipments were gone virtually the second they became available. This resulted in prices skyrocketing on the secondhand market. Nintendo ultimately discontinued the system before demand could be satisfied--a situation that many fear will also be the case with the SNES Classic. Nintendo has already said its current plans are only to offer the system until the end of 2017, but it claims it will offer "significantly more" units this time around.

Oh this is going to be another Nintendo circus. I'll stick with my emulator on PC, or use my actual SNES.

@7tizz: I'm just going to clarify things here. Emulating SNES games are NOT consider steal and why you ask? Because SNES had stop mass productions many years ago and Nintendo doesn't get any benefits when a product stops printing money for them and emulating SNES games have never been consider stealing and never will. This is well known to any PC gamers like me and since you don't game on PC, I thought I come by and tell you that emulation is only good when a system is no longer being supported.

@davillain-: I need to ask you an amateur question since I see your post here and I don't feel like googling a bunch of BS. Where do you get the best SNES/64/gamecube emulators? I just built my first PC and I prob wont touch these games (too blown away from the graphics upgrade from my Ps4), lol, but it would be cool to dick around with them time to time. I remember many years ago trying to get into this with a shit PC but every website was BS or just didn't work.

@JEF8484: I would say just use the search engine such as Google cause I don't know what the TOU is from GS passing this info.

@JEF8484: ZSNES and SNES9x have been the two historically most famous ones, but if you really want to find out, use a search engine.

@davillain-: *Cough* SNES Classic *Cough*

Sure there were like 10-20 years when SNES was dead, though there was a huge pile of games from Super Mario Bros. to Final Fight to TMNT relaunched on PS2, Xbox Live, Virtual Console etc. So downloading lets say Donkey Kong Country you don't own but could easily buy in a store for another system yeah I'd say that's stealing.

It's a fine line, as they say you're not supposed to modify consoles and stuff either, but at some point it really stops mattering. Likewise with for SNES games example it's like case by case decision. Perhaps there was some reason to really get an old SNES game that hasn't been around since 1995, but by that logic you should now get rid of the file and buy a SNES classic full price (If Nintendo didn't f with the unit numbers that is. Though it's still like a big concert or movie, just because you didn't get a ticket you shouldn't go rogue and somehow compensate for the "betrayal")

And if we want to get REALLY metaphilosophical then one could say that by getting a "grey area" game for free you are getting entertainment. Without the said game you probably would have seeked for other entertainment, possibly giving someone money.

Though with all the billions of people it's a mess. For a long time I've been thinking the companies should just make some donation sites. Like if you really wanted some old game and got it from some shady place, you could still somehow donate money to the makers.

@davillain-: it is stealing, its only not stealing when you own the orignal cart.....lol you reasons for it not being stealing dont apply, you cant go to a single rom site without a big banner saying IF YOU OWN THE GAME.

@sellingthings: see, thats where you are wrong....if nintendo sent you a summons to appear in court for copyright reasons, wheres your proof you owned the games? you dont have any so you lose....its that simple..unless you are in possession of the physical cart you are stealing. there are no if ands or buts when it comes to roms, either you own it or you dont. some companies eventually say whatever but i dont see nintendo doing that

@davillain-: It is indeed stealing, but since Nintendo are idiots and doesn't care about their real fans as much as creating a rare product, I will let it slide.

@sellingthings: .....so i cant steal my 970 back from a friend i sold it to, because i owned it once so i always own it?????its not stealing????you need proof, saying i owned the legend of zelda on nes doesnt prove i own it nor would a judge say , he owned it 25 years ago so its ok. lol youre just trying to justify stealing. roms are illegal unless you have the games physically in hand and are using the roms as backups that is all.

@7tizz: In your opinion; If I own the game by legal methods, but i'm too lazy to connect the console to the tv and prefer to play it in an emulator; does it counts as stealing?

@adsparky: Whether or not you personally consider it stealing is irrelevant. Downloading ROMs is illegal - even if you physically own the game you're downloading.

@7tizz: For the record, I'm against piracy and emulation isn't consider stealing if and only if that product is no longer being supported by the actual company.

Emulation is only stealing when a product is still in mass production like Wii U for example, that would be stealing indeed and I'm against that!

@davillain-: what about virtual console? Also I can't just start stealing things cuz they are not made anymore. If that's the case let's start counterfeiting old money since it's not available to me:)

@7tizz: Eh.... Don't defend Nintendo.... They have plenty of lawyers to do that themselves. They are basically another evil corporation outside of the creative department. They treat their fans like garbage.

Emulation is typically frowned upon unless you own everything involved in playing the game normally. It's not explicitly illegal, but downloading or distributing the ROMS or BIOS data is indeed illegal. I'm sure Nintendo would argue it's never okay (unless they do it and sell it to you).

@pyro1245: Yes it is explicitly illegal. Someone made up the "legal if you own the game" myth and everyone believed it because it's what they wanted to hear. It's illegal to download ROMs. Period.

@sellingthings: the absolute only *possibly* legal way to acquire a ROM legally is to rip it yourself from a game you own while you still have the game. I'm even hazy about that too. Nintendo says ROM dumpers are illegal, so I'm not sure. It may be similar to hash pipes and such - legal to sell but illegal to use - but I'm not sure.

As I said, downloading ROMs from the internet is illegal. Please learn to use ellipses.

@computernoises: Downloading a ROM off of the internet is illegal. Period. There's no two ways about it. If you think it's legal then you're wrong. It really is that simple.

FYI: downloading a copy of a movie from a torrent or other illegitimate source is illegal too. You can make a copy, but you can't download one legally. Not saying it's unethical, but it is illegal.
