Smash Bros. Ultimate's Cuphead, Warframe Spirits Are Coming Back

Nintendo's homage to all things gaming is getting a few more hat-tips to popular titles.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is getting another round of DLC characters, but at least some of those aren't likely to come until 2021. In the meantime, Nintendo is continuing to support the Smash Bros. homage to all things gaming with the addition of Spirits--including one that has already gotten a hat-tip from Nintendo.

A tweet from the official Smash Bros. Japan account shows Spirits for both Warframe and Cuphead. The Warframe Spirits include Lotus and Natah, while the Cuphead ones are Cuphead and Mugman. These were previously available as part of their own Spirit Board events, but it appears they'll now be showing up again as normal Spirits. Cuphead was also previously added as a Mii Fighter costume. The action MMO Warframe came to Switch in 2018.

Now Playing: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Adds Byleth & Cuphead - GS News Update

Spirits are essentially collectible power-ups in Smash Bros., running the gamut from obscure Nintendo history to other popular characters and franchises. They can be equipped to power up your characters, and since they're flat images, it's relatively simple for Nintendo to continuously add new ones as compared to roster additions.

The last DLC Fighters Pass ended with Byleth from Fire Emblem, at which point Nintendo announced the next pass. So far we only know that the first of the planned fighters will be from the Nintendo Switch game Arms. Nintendo has also used Smash Bros. to promote its other games, like the recent addition of Animal Crossing: New Horizons spirits. The love goes both ways, as a fan just completed a massive project to make costumes for the entire Smash roster.
