Smash Bros. designer's arm injury sounds like it's getting worse

Masahiro Sakurai says the the tendon sheath inflammation symptoms in his left forearm are "especially hard to deal with."

Development on the upcoming Super Smash Bros. game for Wii U and 3DS is taking a physical toll on director Masahiro Sakurai. After revealing last year that he's suffering from calcific tendinitis and muscle ruptures in his right shoulder (which is affecting his right arm), he has now spoken out to say this condition is now affecting his left arm as well.

"The tendon sheath inflammation symptoms in my left forearm are especially hard to deal with." Sakurai said in his latest Famitsu blog (translated by Kotaku). "I've been moving the controller as gently as possible. And losing at Smash Bros…"

What specific impact Sakurai's arm injury has on the development of the new Super Smash Bros. game remains to be seen, but it could be serious. Sakurai said in February 2013 that, "If this disorder lingers, or if it never gets fixed, there's no telling what impact that would have on the project."

Sakurai is the director on the new Super Smash Bros. game, meaning he presumably tests the project on a regular basis. As fans of the series know, Smash Bros. requires fairly advanced hand/finger motions, which are likely problematic for Sakurai considering his injury.

Whatever the case, Nintendo is still expecting the new Super Smash Bros. game for Wii U and 3DS to launch later this year. Just this week, Sakurai revealed that the Home Run Bat will return for the new game, though it looks quite a bit different from the last time we saw it.

Finally, Sakurai addressed in his blog post a question about why some Japanese games take so long to make. He said what's truly important, whether a development period is long or short, is "if the man-hours spent can bring a profit or results."

Nintendo will hold a Nintendo Direct video presentation today at 2 p.m. PDT/5 p.m. EDT to discuss Wii U and 3DS games launching by this spring.

Holey-moley, dude...put the controller down and step away slowly. Designing this game isn't worth the long-term detriment to your health.

Walk it off

But seriously what controller can i use for this game. Game Cube Controller FTW!

I thought Namco was developing this. Just have them work on it and review it once a week.

Sounds like he is to busy playing the game rather than releasing it.

Doesn't sound pleasant. And they should really bring in someone to help with the play-testing.

I heard that Cliffy B sprained his ankle after he fell down while dancing around to Macklemore while cleaning his shower and that Ken Levine slipped on the ice and upon landing hurt his wrist a bit. Also apparently Peter Molyneux has been spending 2/3 of his day being hung upside down by his feet reportedly as research for his next yet unannounced game.

I've only read this in gossip rags though so maybe you professionals in the gaming press can look into these to either confirm or deny if these also very important stories are true.

Is this really news-worthy? He is not an athlete. I am sure there are many developers with injuries or other issues. This is ridiculous.

sakurai should also take

notes on how well-made,smooth and unique Squirtle, ivysaur and charizard(in fact, almost every characters are simply amazing in Project M) are now played in Project M 3.0 for Brawl instead of tacking in the same old characters with bland move-sets. as much as I liked playing brawl, project M is simply the best thing that could happen to that game and is

how the game shouldve been in the first place. Lately SsB4 news feel more like a ''meh'' than a ''yay'' to me.

<< LINK REMOVED >> have you tried brawl minus? All my friends and I like that a whole lot more than we liked project M in terms of how much fun it is to play. Project M is probably a bit more balanced, but in terms of fun, minus Is the winner in my book.

Figures Eddie would write another negative story about something going on at Nintendo... but I actually can't help but be concerned this time. It sounds like Sakurai could use a rest and get this checked out. I don't care if the game gets delayed because of it. That man is who makes SSB what it is. I'd hate for something serious to happen to him or his ability to test the game himself, not just because the game wouldn't be the same without him, but because he's just a great guy.

If he needs some time off, then allow him some. I mean, a delayed game isn't the end of the world.

Abit off-topic but SSB4 needs more heavy fighters and a villain like King K. Rool from the DK universe would totally fit in instead of another generic monkey character like Dixie which would barely have any interesting move-sets. Heres a preview of what King K. Rool would look/play like << LINK REMOVED >>

Gee the guy should probably take a real rest rather than risk permanent injury for the sake of one game! I'm sure there are plenty of other skilled testers and designers around that can help pick up the slack of one person sitting out of the actual play-testing... I mean sure he's the designer and all, but when it comes to injuries you really should treat them with respect.

Wow, as others said, if waiting a little longer for the game could mean Sakurai getting better than by all means take a medical leave!

At this point, a delayed Smash Bros does not make a difference to me, especially since we do not have an actual release date. As little impact as my words will have, I hope he takes a break and gets his arms fixed up. If Nintendo goes ahead and pays for it, it'd be great PR for them as well.

I would say let someone else do the work, and just supervise. I wouldn't play around with an injury.

Sakurai should look into hiring a co-director or something who can play the game while he observes and takes notes on what needs to be improved or tightened. He's given us some great games and it would be a shame if he permanently damaged himself by pushing himself too far when it's not warranted. Even if we have to wait a few extra months or such. As Miyamoto said, "a delayed game is good eventually."

<< LINK REMOVED >> There are also special controllers for people who are disabled. They aren't cheap, but it is something else to consider. Either way, he shouldn't strain himself over the game. A little delay won't hurt.
