Now Playing: GS News Update: Sleeping Dogs Movie With Star Wars: Rogue One Actor Isn't Dead

In 2017 Donnie Yen, the actor and martial artist known for his roles in Ip Man and Rogue One: A Star War Story, among other films, was cast in a movie adaptation of United Front Games' Sleeping Dogs. Although news about the flick has since been quiet, Yen has confirmed that the project is still happening.

Yen posted an image of himself on Instagram that looks a lot like promotional art of Wei Shen, the protagonist of Sleeping Dogs. There's also a few additional images from the game alongside scenes of Yen mimicking the shots. These don't look to be from the actual film and are more of a proof of life for the movie.

Alongside the pictures, Yen posted a message saying, "Sometimes great things take a bit of time. Sleeping Dog is motion, you guys ready for this?"

Although Yen has been cast in the role of an undercover cop, it hasn't been confirmed whether this character is based on Wei Shen. In the game, Shen is a member of the Hong Kong Police but infiltrates the Triads to bring them down from the inside. However, over time he develops deep connections with people in the organisation and his allegiances to the police and the Triads are put to the test.

Previous reports indicated the film is being produced by Original Film and DJ2 Entertainment, under the guidance of producers Neal Moritz (the Fast and Furious series), Dmitri Johnson, and Dan Jevons.

Sleeping Dogs was originally released in 2012 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, with a Definitive Edition released in 2014. In GameSpot's Sleeping Dogs review, Carolyn Petit awarded it an 8/10, saying "it's the atmospheric city and the varied story missions that make Sleeping Dogs an alluring adventure."

As of yet it has not been confirmed whether the Pork Bun Guy will be featured in the film.

What about that Into the Badlands actor Daniel Wu? I like Donnie Yen, but I think Daniel Wu looks the part.

Avatar image for suicidesn0wman

These images came from his movies, 3rd pick clearly shows a shot of him from one of the IP Man movies.

The best advice I can give them is put the movie to sleep.

Sleeping Dogs deserves a sequel but of course Square Enix ruined that like they ruin eveything I really feel bad for United Front Games they made one hell of a game it's one of the best open world games of all time.

Wow, the article headline is pretty insulting... "Star Wars Actor?" The dude's name is Donnie Yen, and he's worked his ass off for years in tons of movies. He's one of the biggest international martial arts star currently, and also does a lot of fight choreography for films too.

Anyway... I would definitely watch a Sleeping Dogs movie with Donnie Yen, very entertaining martial artist to watch.

Avatar image for BloodMist

@p1p3dream: I was thinking the exact same thing, LOL. Really he is one of the biggest international superstars though, with the exception of North America.

Avatar image for p1p3dream

@BloodMist: I know, right!? It at least makes me happy to see how many people have agreed similarly along these same lines in these comments. I feel like the headline is really not very informational- "Star Wars Actor" is so vague, it could refer to so many different actors... and I feel like more people might actually know who Donnie Yen is then Don't. I guess I could be wrong, I've just been a huge fan of his ever since I say him in IP MAN years ago when it came out. After that movie, I followed his career for a while and he's been in a ton of stuff.

Anyway, cheers!

Look Donnie is fantastic but I hope he's not playing Wei Shen because 54 just too old. Obviously not for the action scenes I'm sure he hasn't lost his touch I just think that's taking it a bit far.

Don't care about the film, nor do I have any expectations for it.

What I desperately need is another Sleeping Dogs game. The first game was my favourite game of the year, and better than GTA V in literally every way except the size of the world.

Hopefully they don't drag Uwe Boll out of retirement to screenwrite & direct, lmao :-P

Avatar image for Sepewrath

@blitxxx1981: Retirement? I thought he was locked in a steel box and dropped in the ocean never to be heard from again :P

Avatar image for blitxxx1981

@Sepewrath: roflmfao, I wish (ocean) :-P

But yea, he hosted a petition himself that he would quit directing because people hated him if it succeeded the #s and he really did retire completely over it, lols; full story on his Wiki page

I hope the movie does come out and it turns out well. Maybe it'll spark new interest in a Sleeping Dogs 2.

I'm confused, didn't United Front Games go under? Also, why is a video game adaptation of a game from 2011 still happening?

Avatar image for playstationzone

I rather have a new sleeping dogs game than a movie

Avatar image for blitxxx1981

@playstationzone: True! If "Yakuza" can get title after title, SD should at least have a sequel...

Avatar image for Byshop

@blitxxx1981: Yakuza also already has a live action movie...

Avatar image for playstationzone

@blitxxx1981: of cause

Avatar image for deactivated-5aa080b4ab96f

@playstationzone: We all know how great video game movies turn out . Why does this need to get made into a movie, not everyone knows about this game, it’s kinda of a hidden gem

Avatar image for playstationzone

@customx5: I know right but sleeping dogs was true crime once .

Avatar image for deactivated-5b0457a4d6084

@playstationzone: That is for sure man.

Avatar image for deactivated-5b0457a4d6084

@Eddie619: Go to the 7:15 part of the video.

Avatar image for playstationzone

@Eddie619: agree

Avatar image for deactivated-5b0457a4d6084

@playstationzone: Sony is a Hardware Company and know how to time things, By Fall 2019 4K TVs will be In a lot more Households. PS4 Pro launched 3 years after PS4 as a Mid Gen Upgrade obviously 3 years after PS4 Pro PS5 should be launched, It seems Sony is switching to 3 Year Hardware Refresh Cycles as that’s their best strategy going forward. Go look at Sony’s past PlayStation launches they always launch a Next Gen System the year that their last batch of Exclusives Launch on their Current System. For Example In 2013 The Last Of Us launched and then PS4 launched in The Fall, You’ll see The Same thing happen Next year with The Last Of Us 2 launching and then PS5 launching in the Fall.

Sony had PS4 Pro on their mind before PS4 launched. The PS4/Pro cycle every 3 years will keep continuing PS5 Fall 2019/ PS5 Pro Fall 2022.

Did you actually dare to call Donnie Yen, f*cking Ip Man, a "Rogue One actor"?

Avatar image for p1p3dream

@wojtini: Lol, I had the same gut reaction. It seems kind of an ignorant headline, and disrespectful even.

Avatar image for The_Inebriator

@wojtini: Seriously. I love Rogue One, but Donnie Yen’s resume is far too impressive to be referred to like that.

Avatar image for wojtini

@The_Inebriator: ikr, he is freaking Ip Man

Avatar image for deactivated-5c56012aaa167

True Crime >>> Sleeping Dogs

Avatar image for gotrekfabian

@dorog1995: You'd be amazed at how many people don't even realise that.

Avatar image for proxima1025

@gotrekfabian: isn't that an opinion? I would hope that you see that opinions aren't fact and your views although important to yourselves mean sod all to other viewpoints.

Avatar image for gotrekfabian

@proxima1025: Opinion? I guess you didn't get what was meant by the original comment.

I'll never understand why United Front Games decided to make Smash+Grab and Triad Wars instead of Sleeping Dogs 2.. Probably their most successful game too.

Avatar image for deactivated-5c56012aaa167

@gamingdevil800: Imo, because their game wasn't that successful and unlike Tomb Raider 2013 the Definitive Edition of SD didn't manage to save it.

Avatar image for gamingdevil800

@dorog1995: Wow I looked it up, I really overestimated the initial popularity of this game:

Avatar image for MJ12-Conspiracy

@gamingdevil800: I would say the fail was UFG, look at their history they made 2 kart racers that failed to match Mario Kart and both suffered the same issues, slow loads, overly hard difficulty & really not good racing....

Mario kart is easy, has a deep challenge to it and is fun for the most part [when you aren't being bombarded with the same attacks nonstop]

Mod Nation racers, then Sleeping dogs, LBP Karting, TR Definitive, Halo MCC, Disney Infinity 3.0, then the 2 failed games and closure.....

if you really look at em they had 3 mediocre games that sold better than the rest and a series of failures that lead to their closure....why were they the ones remastering games?? seems odd to me.....

IDK, I was never a big fan of the True Crime games, I liked the second one cus it improved on the first one but I wasn't looking forward to a third one and Sleeping Dogs kinda had the right idea but it woulda been better if they just copied Yakuza and made it a brawler, you're just some guy who wades through the filth to exact revenge or something, the complicated you're a undercover cop meant to take down the gangs from the inside just complicated any decisions you might make.....

but yeah replicate the density of 10 square blocks and keep you in Chinatown as you take out the trash, that'd be a fun game....

Ok we got a movie, we got an MMO spin-off ... but we didn't get a sequel.

Something seems off.

Avatar image for blitxxx1981

@R4gn4r0k: err, don't want a SD MMO (never even heard of the idea)... Square don't need to do an MMO SD; it will always be over shadowed by Rockstar's Online games (wouldn't be surprised if GTA 6 will be in Asia, rumors are that V was originally going to be set in Tokoyo anyways so I'm sure Rock* already did city research for dev purposes; wouldn't be a bad place for GTA to go)

but imo the game deserves a good movie (yes, I know about True Crime but lets try SD) and I would love a true sequel game

last note: if Yakuza can get title after title, SD should already have a sequel because imo SD was better than any Yakuza

Avatar image for R4gn4r0k

@blitxxx1981: United Front Games (who created Sleeping Dogs) were making a spin off MMO game for Square Enix.

It was called Triad Wars, the game got canned and so was the developer.

Avatar image for blitxxx1981

@R4gn4r0k: Snazzy, I read up on it on Google, so Thanks :-)

idk how but I managed to totally miss "Triad Wars" but I'm not in to MMO's
