Sledgehammer's Call of Duty aiming for 'hyper-realism' - Report

Job listing at MW3 studio Sledgehammer Games calls for artist with knowledge of current-gen systems to "create the most exceptional real-time effects" for new COD.

A new Call of Duty game in development at Modern Warfare 3 studio Sledgehammer Games is gunning for hyper-realism, according to a job ad at the studio. The senior FX artist requisition has since been removed, but Videogamer captured it and reports it states a successful candidate will "create the most exceptional real-time effects with hyper-realism for [Sledgehammer's] next Call of Duty game."

War is going to get really real, according to the job ad.
War is going to get really real, according to the job ad.

The job ad also reportedly indicates that the new Call of Duty game may be released on current-generation consoles. The listing asks that a candidate have "solid professional experience and knowledge of the limitations and performance of current-generation hardware." No further information on the project is available, and as of press time, Activision had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment.

Advanced graphics is something Activision is aware Call of Duty fans are asking for. Last month, Treyarch studio head Mark Lamia explained that with the studio's upcoming Black Ops II, the focus for Treyarch has been to "push."

"[Fans] want us to make a better-looking game; they want things. I don't think those are things people can't ask for," he said. "We asked ourselves that very same question--we wanted to advance the graphics. I think the questions are valid."

Before signing on to assist Infinity Ward on Modern Warfare 3, Sledgehammer Games was at work on a third-person action adventure Call of Duty game. That game isn't likely to see the light of day, as Sledgehammer Games general manager Glen Schofield said last year that the project will "probably" be canceled.

The next Call of Duty game is Black Ops II, which is slated to arrive for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on November 13. That game is a sequel to 2010's original Black Ops, which is the best-selling series entry to date, moving more than 25 million copies as of August 2011.

call of duty..........push the limits, advanced graphics, i laugh at the crappy crappy graphics that the ps3 and xbox put out compared to a real gaming machine. its not like console games are known for their ports to pc, have not seen a good one yet between bad graphics, horribly clunky UI's and ass backwards control schemes, one would wonder if console developers ever played games on a PC before

COD needs an entirely re-built or completely new gaming engine. They won't pull off any miracles (not even close) with their current engine. They might as well (probably will) dish out a couple more COD 4 clones until the new consoles arrive and try their luck with that.. They have a lot to compete for with Forstbite 2 and Cryengine 3, which are literally years ahead of COD's engine.

I doubt it. That would destroy their fanbase. Me, I play COD because I love the singeplayer and think the multiplayer is alright. The hefty majority of casuals who buy COD would be able to handle a realistic shooter. Bullet drop, one bullet kills with every weapon, no perks, and the like would not compute for those people.

Realism in games would be very hard to achieve imo. So lets see what they'll manage to achieve.

I don't know how they can talk about wanting realism,i play Black Ops and MW3 and i never ever play real time on these games,i play with such a delay that i'm often dead before my killer has even appeared on my screen.

I have no gripe with graphics/perks/guns/maps etc,or indeed whatever else the gaming world nitpicks about whilst avoiding the real issue.I think going by CoD's past record that their next release will just be yet another title that will be dominated by those with superior broadband whilst those who aren't that fortunate to have superfast broadband will remain just making up the numbers.

It is so frustrating knowing you're really good at Call of Duty and still competing more often than not whilst suffering from crippling lag and getting killed by lower level, inferior gun,non pro-perk using noobs simply because they play real time which allows them to get their shots off first every time!

So they think they are going to turn it into ARMA or Operation Flashpoint? Yeah, I'm sure Activision would ever let them do this. In honesty though, this article really, really makes me laugh lol.

I think they confused ArmA with COD. As much as a change is needed, this would no longer be COD. Which may or may not be a bad thing depending on how you look at it.

Hyper Realism? so is it going to be one bullet kills you? or is it hyper realistic textures and animation of characters but still the same stylized action as usual?

It would be funny if they did go as realistic as Operation Flashpoint, one well placed bullet kills instantly, get too close to an explosion and you die outright, get shot in the leg and you can't run anymore or shot in the arm you lose the use of that arm......forget head shots one well placed chest shot can kill.....

Gameplay is more important than graphics. The gameplay has been pretty much the same since CoD4. That's the problem. Every title from then on felt more like an expansion pack then proper sequels.

@AuronAXE But please state what can the do to move the series forward and not upset a great magnitude of there fan base?

All that CoD seems to do each series, is change the story, locals and timeline plus the sale numbers seems to say fans don't mind..

The hard truth is CoD has peaked, but how long it stays @ peak that remain to be seen..

Surprise, Surprise. Activision is now has three studios pumping out COD games. It wasn't enough to get a COD every year, now we can get them every 9 months! COD9 : BO2 looks fun for some, but others are excited for COD10 : MW4, but don't forget that many are already discounting COD11 : BO3, that will be Treyarch's Opus!...but COD12 : MW5 will be IW's return to form after being gutted and destroyed by Activision after COD6 : MW2.

They should be careful using the word "realism". Tom McShea might get it wrong again and we'd have another "doesn't have to be fun" debate.

@IamTheBesteva It's two different developers. Infinity Ward/Sledgehammer make games separately from Treyarch. So each game actually gets a 2-year development cycle.

"hyper realism". A new term for great looking graphics. Well if that is what the people is it not better to start making this future release for the Xbox 720.

Hyper realism cannot refer to the Call of duty game play.

Realism to me is Rainbow Six and Rainbow Six Rouge Spear. I'm going to HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY doubt that they would ever go that route with a Call Of Duty title. Mostly because of the fact that complete realism isn't "fun" it's difficult and very challenging. Not that realism isn't fun, it's just that a difficulty of that sort would get fanboys whining and complaining about how "hard" it is...
