Skyrim Remaster Is "as Next-Gen as Possible"

"Performance, effects, or whatever we can do to make the game look and feel better, we're going to give it a go."

The remastered version of 2011's The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is aiming to be "as next-gen" as possible, according to Bethesda's Pete Hines.

While the developer isn't yet talking specifics about all the ways in which the new version is improved, Hines said players can expect a range of updates.

"We haven't gotten into the full, 'Here's all the things we're doing.' But the basic idea is, in all the ways possible we're trying to improve it and make it as next-gen and appropriate for these consoles as possible," he told IGN. "Performance, effects, or whatever we can do to make the game look and feel better, we're going to give it a go."

Bethesda announced the Skyrim remaster, officially titled the Special Edition, during its E3 2016 briefing. It sports a number of new visual effects, including god-rays, new snow shaders, and more. Here's a screenshot from the announcement trailer:

No Caption Provided

Check out the video above to see a graphics comparison that shows off how much better the Special Edition looks. What we've seen so far is unmistakably a better-looking version of an older game, but not something built from the ground up for new consoles, obviously.

Additionally, the Special Edition's console version will support PC mods. This is not uncharted territory for a Bethesda game, as Fallout 4 PC mods now work on Xbox One and are coming to PlayStation 4 later this month.

Skyrim's Special Edition launches on October 28 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. If you're playing on PC, you may be entitled to a free upgrade to the Special Edition at launch.

The file size for Xbox One is 15.21 GB. It just started predownloading. Pretty excited to replay this amazing game with mods and better graphics On my XBOX. I don't have a good Gaming PC and I don't want to hear from people saying that PC is so much better.

I don't care I like my gaming consoles just fine.

Fallout 4 is the same engine as the PS3 Skyrim so I expect this to be similar. Fallout 4's character graphics and load times aren't much better than Skyrim. The environments look great. The FX like explosions look great. 3D character graphics, combat physics, and LOAD LOAD LOAD times are almost identical to Skyrim.

It's time for Bethesda to create a new gaming engine to be on the same level as other next gen console games.

Considering I will get this update for free on steam, I am thinking part of me thinks it will be broken more than the legendary edition because I've experienced Fallout 3 GOTY on PS3 and Fallout New Vegas (PC) and I along with many others no what stress is like for a game. I just want them to remaster Oblivion on PC now

@Dav_id83:

It won't be broken...in fact, it'll be more stable than the original Skyrim since it will be a legitimate 64bit process!

Updating mods to the new version is 'supposed' to be easy too....we'll see about that though, won't we!

@whitejackel: Yes, this was already announced at the same time as the reveal. This is also why the game will be given for free to PC owners which also owns all of the DLC.

I wonder if all the same glitches will be still in it.

Like the one where you can jump out of Whiterun at the front gate and run around the back to where the blacksmith is, then steal all his inventory from the hidden chest underground lol. That's not been patched to this day.

Since you can now use the PC mods = I expect every Console Gamer will at least use the Unofficial Patches. Fixes almost every issue in the game!

@the7698466: If there's mod support for consoles, I imagine there'll be an 'Unofficial Patch' as there was with Fallout 4 (and Skyrim for PC). It's not completely bug-proof, but it does make the game run a lot smoother.

@the7698466: The funny glitches they intentionally kept, yes probably. Thos which ended up not being fixed due to time constrain though, I highly doubt they'll let them in. Basicaally, I'm pretty sure the "Giant sending you into high space bug" will mostly stay in. The other quality issues like missing geos or broken textures or broken scripts are mostly going to get fixed.

I have a feeling the trophies/achievements are going to be the exact same on PS4/XB1 as they are on PS3/360, but I'm really hoping they do new, different trophies/achievements because it would give the game some new flavor.

@darkprince2: I got the same feeling as you, but yeah. It would be fun to have a motivation for new challenges. Like an achievement for mastering a skill perktrees, collecting all stone of barenziah, stealth killing x monsters with ridiculous amount of health in one hit or whatever.

@heqteur: Yep. And if they don't I wonder if somebody could mod achievements into the PC version or if that's even possible. Even if they were only in-game achievements, it'd still be cool.

It'd be nice if they put timestamps (exact date and time) on the comments. When people reply to me and the reply is on a different page, the notification won't take me to the post and it takes a while to find it. The simplest way that I found to do it is to use Ctrl+F on each page and search for my username, but I had to close the search box and reopen it for each page which was quite a nuisance.

Skyrim has always been a beautiful game, but the trailer didn't show anything that made my jaw drop. Certainly not anything to convince me to pay full price for a game that's five years old. I'll get it, on a flash sale.

Apparently people prefer paying again for the same game, rather than buying a new game. This generation is all about the easy money.

@straightcur:

First off, this type of remaster is not "easy". Secondly, as consoles seem to be moving to iterative updates as opposed to generational shifts it seems like lack of backwards compatibility will be a thing of the past. If bringing these old games back in an upgraded form means they'll be preserved and playable on consoles for long into the future, I'm all for it. I'm sure major game publishers knew this was the way things were heading for a while now, hence the rush to port their classics to the current gen.

For the amount of hours that i have dumped into the The Elder Scrolls in general, I'll pay the full price, ill be salty about it but there isnt a series of games that i have put that many hours into. Ill get another 500 hours easily.

@Sozialminister: That's just making an entirely new game at this point. Even if Bethesda were to do that, we wouldn't hear about it for a couple years.

@Sozialminister: TES 2 would not only need a graphical overhaul. It would also need to make a sense of that super extra huge world filled with ... nothingness.

@ltjohnnyrico: considering neo is more of a PS4.5 than an actual next gen and ms is trying to sell us scorpio as a "so advanced piece of technology", I wouldn't consider any of them as next gen.

@ltjohnnyrico: Bethesda's always a generation behind. Skyrim used DirectX 9c (from 2004)...in 2011. It'll take a while for their terminology to catch up.

Agree with the general sentiment that a Skyrim remake is great, how can it possibly be justified as a full-price release ? Relatively speaking, the game is ANCIENT. This should be $35.00.

It's crazy that Bethesda is charging $60 for a game that is almost 5 years old. At least they could have patched up past console issues, especially on PS3. I'm interested, but after being burned with Fallout 4's Minecraft DLC, I'll wait for a price drop.
