Skyrim PC players average 75 hours of playtime

Bethesda creative director Todd Howard says PC edition of blockbuster open-ended RPG has sold multiple millions of copies, runs down lengthy list of features that could be coming to The Elder Scrolls V.

LAS VEGAS--It's not surprising to hear that an Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim player spent 75 hours playing the game. It's a little more surprising to hear that's what the average Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim player spent in Bethesda's open-ended role-playing game.

Skyrim: Stay awhile. Stay forever.
Skyrim: Stay awhile. Stay forever.

Delivering the opening keynote address of the 2012 D.I.C.E. Summit tonight, Bethesda Game Studios creative director Todd Howard said the average Skyrim playtime for the PC version of the game was 75 hours. That's not exactly a small sample set, either, as Howard said multiple millions of people had picked up the PC edition of Skyrim. Combined with the console versions, Skyrim has sold more than 10 million copies, Howard said.

Beyond that, Howard also showed off a video clip compiling some last-minute work on the game. Once development on Skyrim was essentially complete, Bethesda gave its developers a week to work on whatever they wanted, provided it could be put into the game. The week that followed was among the most creative and productive in company history, he said, with a host of new features being tossed into the game.

Among the week's additions were seasonal foliage, spears, dramatic camera angles for magic and ranged combat kills, hanging structures and moving platforms in dungeons, dragon mounts, mounted combat, goblins, spell combinations, the ability to build a home, and even Kinect speech recognition for spells. Unfortunately, Howard was vague about how the new features could be added to Skyrim, saying it might be downloadable content packs, or possibly free downloads.

The keynote address--which is available to watch in its entirety on GameSpot--covered a variety of subjects, from Bethesda's design philosophy to the reasons Howard believes this is a golden age of gaming.

The D.I.C.E. Summit (Design, Innovate, Communicate, Entertain) is a once yearly conference dedicated to exploring approaches to the creative process and artistic expression as they uniquely apply to the development of interactive entertainment. It is organized by the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences and hosts the annual Interactive Achievement Awards, which celebrate the best games of the past year, as voted by AIAS members. Comedian Jay Mohr will return to host the awards show--which takes place on February 9.

@ash162 - In a word: No. I've put in over 130 hours on my PS3 version so far. I have experienced no game breaking bugs; just the occasional visual hiccup. I've had a total of 4 game freezes in that time, all on loading screens. No noticable slowdown; despite the fact that my save file is over 1200 mb... I call shenanigans on the PS3 flaws rumor. I personally know (outside of gamespot; in real life) 5 other people playing on the PS3 who have logged a significant amount of time, including one who is over 160 hours, and no one has had the problems that have been described. I think it may have just been fanboy flames.

Heh, I've almost doubled that on my PS3. I'm sure by the time I put it down I will have logged well over 200 hours; making Skyrim my most played game ever.

This is another example of how a well advertised and supported PC version can sell really well. It's very simple, you put in resources to make the PC version at least as good as console versions, release it at the same time (not 6 months later) and treat the buyers the same way as console buyers (no DRMs) and keep supporting the product and you get sales and respect on PC too, something that publishers like Ubisoft don't seem to get.

There's no legit reason the mod community needs to be limited to the PC. Some sort of mod support on the console versions would go a long way toward making the PS3 and 360 a more legitimate way to play Skyrim. Not saying there needs to be compatibility with PC mods, even some sort of heavily gimped and simplified version of the Creation Kit on 360 would make me happy

Thankfully, there were enough new games building up in my backlog that I was able to break Skyrim's spell on me after playing almost every day for a month. Now that the creation kit is out though...I'd better remember to get out at least once in a while.

I played for like 40 or so hours before I got bored from the crazy amount of quests you can do. I quit the game after accidentally watching a relative finish the game off lost all motivation.Though if it had a super great story I would have stuck it out to the end. Lol I guess i'm weird compared to most of ya. I want a linear game with a great story. Not a game with so many possibilities it gets hard to focus.

Passed 118 hours yesterday, just joined the college of Winterhold. It's been tough to find enough time to play, but I'm enjoying every minute of it. I've had to give up on some TV shows I used to watch.

When you take into consideration this is the AVERAGE from a couple MILLION gamers... that's a hell of a lot.

I'm at 68, but then work takes up a substantial amount of time. If I didn't have work to do, it would easily be three times that amount.

Only 75? I'm at 112 hrs and still have a crap load left to do. Also, I see no spears seasonal foliage etc. Not in my game. Nope. Where are these things being hidden?

@psx_warrior In what capacity? None of those are available in vanilla Skyrim. None. Of course, GS could have simply left out an important detail...

@parrot_of_adun Read the paragraph again. It said provided it could be put into the game. Then it said that all the things you just quoted were put in the game.

And none of this made it into the game. What the hell, Bethesda? I want dramatic spear battles on moving platforms with goblins. Well, I mostly just want spears back.
