Skylanders Reaches 250 Million Toys Sold, New Game Announced

As Activision's toys-to-life franchise reaches new milestone, Skylanders: SuperChargers is announced.

Activision's toys-to-life franchise, Skylanders, has now sold through more than 250 million toys since the franchise debuted four years ago, the publisher revealed today as part of the announcement of the next game in the series. As stated previously, Skylanders has generated $3 billion for Activision so far.

Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure, released in 2011, was the first entry in the series. Since then, Activision has annualized the series somewhat like Call of Duty, releasing Skylanders Giants in 2012, Skylanders SWAP Force in 2013, and Skylanders Trap Team in 2014.

The next entry in the franchise, Skylanders SuperChargers, was announced today. This game changes things up by introducing vehicles (land, sky, and sea) to the series for the first time.

Twenty new character toys and 20 new vehicle toys will be available for purchase when SuperChargers launches in September for consoles, PC, and mobile. For lots more on SuperChargers, check out GameSpot's just-published hands-on preview and a new trailer below that features Travis Pastrana.

The Skylanders franchise faces more competition than ever this year. In addition to Disney Infinity and Amiibo, Warner Bros. will release its exciting-sounding LEGO Dimensions in September, featuring toys based on heavyweight franchises such as Batman, The Lord of the Rings, and The Simpsons, among others.

Nintendo has sold 10.5 million Amiibo toys by its latest count, while sales figures for Disney Infinity are unavailable.

Bought my son the Trap Team Skylanders for Christmas. The game is pretty decent and reminds me of late-90's platformers, which is pretty cool. Got a handful of figures and traps. Not necessarily opposed to the whole figures and games thing. But I do hate the fact that Activision releases so many variations of Skylanders.

We drew the line with Swapforce. Our boys wanted Trap Team and Disney Infinity 2.0 but we said no to Trap Team and just got them 2.0 for Christmas last year. No way am I wasting more money on this money grabbing joke of a series. They will probably have over a hundred figures or some ridiculous number this time especially when you include variants.

Welcome to the new era of video games, where half the gaming section is stupid toys.

My son loves skylanders .but I will not let him buy this game . trapteam was a total joke . no replay value at all and most of the figures were so hard to find .once we did find them my son had the figures maxed out in minutes . they took out battle mode. It was just total waste of money .

That's a lot of toys... between the Skylanders, Amiibo and Disney Infinity sales figures. Physical toy based add-ons for video games seems to be where the money is at.
