Latest version of Will Wright's phenomenally successful franchise coming to the PC in 2009.

Earlier this month, a teaser site popped up on the Internet promising that more information on The Sims 3 would be coming on March 19. Well, D-Day has come, and Electronic Arts has made it official: The Sims 3 is indeed en route.

The third stand-alone game in the Sims series will feature a new engine, which EA has been slaving away at for three years, and the biggest new feature will be the ability to seamlessly move around an open neighbourhood.

Previous games in the Sims series were expanded by packs such as The Sims: Hot Date, and The Sims: Vacation, which let gamers take their sims on holiday or into town with a beau, for example, but these communal zones were always separate from sims' abodes.

In the next game, the sims will be able to walk freely around their neighbourhoods, visit their pals, and venture to new locations such as City Hall and the local park.

There will also be a "deeper" system for governing how sims behave, called the Realistic Personality System, which will let gamers manipulate five character traits when creating their sims. This opens up a number of possibilities, or as EA puts it: "Will you create the nosy, inappropriate, kleptomaniac grandmother who loves to meddle in other people's business? Or the commitment-phobic, hot-headed punk rocker whose rude nature and childish disposition keeps him from scoring a date?" Apparently, 700 million different combinations await.

Customising both the sims themselves and the items around them will also become an easier and deeper experience, EA says. The upgrades include fine tuning for every part of sims' faces, and a new set of design tools for customising items for their houses.

The first Sims game was released in 2000, and since then the series has sold some 98 million games worldwide, and has been translated into 22 different languages.

The Sims 3 is being developed by Electronic Arts Redwood Shores and will be shipping worldwide on the PC in 2009. There is no mention of it coming to any console platforms.

Louis_Routledge, vista is amazing, its only crap if your computer is crap, XP isnt hungry enough for power. Vista runs like a charm, i only have an Nvidia 7950 and An Intel Pentium 4 Processor, i know, they suck, but yet i play World in Conflict on Ultra High Graphics and there's almost no lag at all, even when im playing online.

I never liked caring for my sims. I wish they were a little more automated. I don't really find it fun telling people when they should take a potty break.

I've always liked the idea of the sims games but some of the more tedious activities they force you to do make it feel more like real life at times instead of a game that's supposed to be fun. I hope EA alleviates some of the tedium and focuses on the fun factor but, I have my doubts about them innovating much with this franchise, is Will Wright even involved at all any more?

please.... make them recognize that they have TWO hands this time around. They are so incapable of multitasking its not funny. And make them walk with a bit more haste

Well, the Sims3, huh? I played the original for all of about ten minutes. hated it.... My wife and I logged hundreds of hours into SIms2 after it launched. But after the Nightlife and University packs, the game has seemed kind of stale, after a bit.... I'm interested what the third installment can offer, but really think I'll just be satisfied sticking with Sims2..... Thanks but no thanks EA.

I hope they take all the old expansion packs and add all their features into this game, just so they don't make 15 expansion packs for this game. Otherwise the first one will be The Sims 3: Why the F*** Didn't we put These Things in the Base Game? Because we at EA are Money Hungry Douchebags. Expansion Pack

I severely dislike EA. It's all been downhill since Sims 2. I'm skeptical of the Sims 3 it has to be said. If it is available for Xbox 360, I will only buy it if it is exactly the same as the 'Vista Only' counterpart. Vista is lame, power hungry and crap for gaming.

This video game is going to be prodigious, in all likelihood.

I'm well aware of the contradictory irony of my name, but i have to say, the Sims is a good pretty good game, even if it is made by EA.... also ea are greedy money grabbers (yes i realise i have said they're good right before ripping on them) ,who don't care about games, they make like 10 expansion packs for every game and fill all their games with big 'EA IS GOOD!!' logos....

This one better ship with more features than 2 did. After all the exapansion packs for the first one they got greedy and actually shipped the first game with less stuff than the first. If it's going to be the same way again, I'm not even going to waste my money.

Nah, the Sims always felt watered down on consoles. I'm not sure if that would remain true with the memory capacity of today's systems, but one thing that has always been wrong with Sims games on consoles is the limited number of people you can create. Usually you can only have one game file and the game incorporated some sort of mission-based gimmick to make up for the lack of open-ended gameplay; as opposed to the PC where you can create pretty much as many Sims as your hard drive will allow. At least, that's been my PC-to-console Sims experience. I rather enjoy the Sims games, but I never truly thought any of them were worth buying for a console. When Sims 3 comes out, I'll be all over it.

Awesome! Looking forward to this one a lot myself. I hope they take the time to make this feel like a proper sequel like the jump from Sims 1 to Sims 2 was.

I know a lot of hardcore Sims 2 fans have been skeptical about what could possibly be "new" with this version. But from the sounds of it a new engine, tailor made personalities and broader item customization will make a great start to getting all Sims fans worked up for it. Now if only EA would listen to some of the fans and put THEIR ideas into the game... ;) Be sure to stop by the Sims Authority videos section if want to see a Sims 3 trailer found within the Sims 2: Free Time expansion! << LINK REMOVED >>
