Sims 3 official

Latest version of Will Wright's phenomenally successful franchise coming to the PC in 2009.

Earlier this month, a teaser site popped up on the Internet promising that more information on The Sims 3 would be coming on March 19. Well, D-Day has come, and Electronic Arts has made it official: The Sims 3 is indeed en route.

The third stand-alone game in the Sims series will feature a new engine, which EA has been slaving away at for three years, and the biggest new feature will be the ability to seamlessly move around an open neighbourhood.

Previous games in the Sims series were expanded by packs such as The Sims: Hot Date, and The Sims: Vacation, which let gamers take their sims on holiday or into town with a beau, for example, but these communal zones were always separate from sims' abodes.

In the next game, the sims will be able to walk freely around their neighbourhoods, visit their pals, and venture to new locations such as City Hall and the local park.

There will also be a "deeper" system for governing how sims behave, called the Realistic Personality System, which will let gamers manipulate five character traits when creating their sims. This opens up a number of possibilities, or as EA puts it: "Will you create the nosy, inappropriate, kleptomaniac grandmother who loves to meddle in other people's business? Or the commitment-phobic, hot-headed punk rocker whose rude nature and childish disposition keeps him from scoring a date?" Apparently, 700 million different combinations await.

Customising both the sims themselves and the items around them will also become an easier and deeper experience, EA says. The upgrades include fine tuning for every part of sims' faces, and a new set of design tools for customising items for their houses.

The first Sims game was released in 2000, and since then the series has sold some 98 million games worldwide, and has been translated into 22 different languages.

The Sims 3 is being developed by Electronic Arts Redwood Shores and will be shipping worldwide on the PC in 2009. There is no mention of it coming to any console platforms.

They do have to make money but some of those expansion packs could of got thrown into a content update to throw a little back to the community.

To everyone complaining about the Sims Expansion Packs: Big Numero Uno: You don't HAVE to buy them, you choose to. And when you do, do you not get your money's worth most of the time? And number two: There is only so much you can fit on one game disk. The engine itself takes up quite a bit, then all of the content and documentation added. Especially with The Sims. I mean, the Sims 2 was 4 whole CD-Roms, thats one DVD, then every other expansion is at least an extra CD-Rom, perhaps a DVD sometimes. And at half the cost for a full CD of useful content, its not that bad. And a minor point, its marketing, you gotta make money somehow. This is a Capitalist Society. You do whatever you can to make money.

One big commercial crap. I love SIMS, but this is going too far.... bringing a great new game out... then planning another 10 expansion packs .. it's just .. wrong! EA SHAME on you really lol!

It is coming to the PS3 holyjim but i'm not sure about the Xbox 360. I'm a big fan of The Sims 2 especially the building part. I'm not crazy about actually controlling the Sim people I just like Building different Houses which is kind of weird since the main part of the game is controlling the Sim people. I really look forward to buying this but I absolately HATE how they don't just put everything into one game and stop making expansion packs! They are making SOOOOOO much money from these expansion packs that it isn't even funny.

I was just playing The Sims 2 and was thinking about a 3rd one. This will be great. Sure I'll try and get it. I hope it will not need high requirements. It's not really bad that they'll might be doing only on pc because on pc is the better one. Still.... If the pc version goes well I think they will make a playstation 3 version and an Xbox one. Obvisouly it won't be available for Ps2 LoL! Hope we hear more about this!

I def agree with hinkwokching!!! The sims is a great game but you waste plenty of money buying all of the expansion pack. You're better off waiting for them to sell all of the expansion packs in a bundle. I don't know if I'll be buying the sims 3. I'm sure it'll be a good game but thats alot more money I'll be spending on expansion packs than I want to. Besides I'm looking forward to playing SPORE any way.

"Customising both the sims themselves . . ." unless it's written in Simolian, it's "customizing".

I got to agree with gdiza. The Sims series have made so much money for them, and not in a completely fair way. I got the feeling that the developers had (and will again) deliberately omitting features, items or objects in the game which they already could have included in the original game so that they could market their expansions later. I (and anyone else, I presume) would be less inclined to criticize them in this respect if they are a bit less "blood-sucking" and include more stuff in the original and subsequent expansions. Instead of half a dozen expansions, where, for the price you paid, don't reaclly warrant the kind of money that they are asking for it. To be honest, I think The Sims series is suffering from what I call "Dragon Ball Z" syndrome. And the modders, an important appeal of the game, is playing along in the games' favour. With all the mods that they make which requires this expansion or that expansion. Anyways, The Sims series was and still has a lot of appeal, and a good game (I speak for myself, at least), but I think I might skip this one if I feel that the game is going the same way as The Sims 2 did. Just too expensive otherwise. And I really hope the EA folks are looking at these reviews, they seriously need change their strategy in this kind of thing, otherwise, they might make at least one of their supporters (me) very sad.

The Sims 2 had like, what, 17 expansion packs... they making millions milking us! The Sims 3 will have what... double that? Wake up people! They can do so much with the release of a "Sims" game, but they wanna milk us by releasing expansions that cost HALF the cost of the original... don't let them!

Woohoo. Can't wait for this one. And by the way why do u need a Sims game on a console? Isn't it better off in a PC itself. Console has many other type of games to play with.

I hope they include a decent building mode for houses the Sims 2 had a good one I hope they can really improve on it. I've been playing the Sims for years and I'm really looking forward to the 3rd installment.

sorry if this has been mentioned in earlier posts (loads of comments to sift thru) but isn't the 'five character traits' available even in the sims 2? how will it be different in this game?

arkadiyk, those textures aren't final, don't be ignorant. The game won't be released until 2009 and all they're probably working on is implementing the new engine, and when all that is said and done, THEN they'll fix up the graphics to be a higher res and look a LOT better.

Needs multiplayer. Even 4-8 players will be an incredible step forward. EA -- this is the Facebook/Myspace/Youtube generation. The Sims crowd is craving multiplayer interactivity.

Even though I'll miss the old engine ( I loved the cartoony graphics.) I think this new engine is a welcome change. 2009 seems like forever but I'll be patient. This game looks like it's well worth the wait.

HA!! Johnny Gamer says EA is the Evil Empire and the Worst Company in the History of Earth until they announce a new Sims game, now he's all a-twitter. I told you Johnny, you'd forget all about your little boycott the second they announce the next title you just have to have. Can't wait to see how long it takes you to snap up a copy of Battlefield 3042: Space Combat Extreme. LOL And by the way - to people who hate on the Sims, remember one thing: Explosions, blood and guts are fun for a while but there's something very rewarding about creating your own little society of people and playing GOD with them. Psychologically destroying the ones you dislike, rewarding the ones you do like, eliminating ugly Sims and cross breeding the attractive ones to create a Master Race of Uber Sims and then setting them all against one another... What, you say I am sick? Fine, I'll fire up GTA and throw hand grenades into traffic. Just as rewarding. LOL

I hope it is early 2009, i can't wait. Hopefully it will have fair requirements and won't be hard to run on the average PC.

I hope the system requirements are low. I do not want to buy a new PC so I am stuck with older games, but at least I have a 360! (Consol Sims sucks!).

I'd expect a PS3 version to follow soon, since they've announced that they've done some development for Sims 3 on it already. Then afterwards, expect much lesser, cut down versions on the 360, Wii, DS, PS2, PSP, Mac, iPhone/iPod, and Mobile.

Can't wait for it. After i dropped about $150 plus for all the expansions, i hope this new game will integrate some of the previous expansions so we dont have to buy all new Sims3 expansions. They sure know how to make money.

I didn't think they could add much more to the Sims, but I guess I was wrong. Though nothing seems major to the formula, the additions are certainly welcome and putting it all in a new engine is also great. While the Sims 2 is going fine, every game needs a bit of a graphical update after 5 years.

Sims games have never really been about high-end graphics; they're made to be accessible, so they won't have the most realistic or well-defined character models. That said, I agree that I'd love to be able to customize the figure (male and female) of my Sims a lot more. It sucked that, while you could vary the facial appearance, hair and skin a whole lot in the Sims 2, the most you could do for a body type was skinny and slightly less skinny. No short, tall, fat, anorexic, buxom, voluptuous, muscular, athletic types... variety is the spice of life and people love to customize their gaming experiences. That's why the Sims is such a successful series...so I hope EA spices it up a lot more.
