Konami's Silent Scope light-gun shooter epitomized the big-cabinet arcade scene when it launched in the late-'90s, given that it tasked players with getting behind the sight of a substantive--if not life-sized--replica of a sniper rifle. Now that experience will be filed down to fit on one of the smallest gaming devices. Konami announced today that Silent Scope is "coming soon" to the iPhone and iPod Touch.

As with the original Silent Scope, players will be tasked with saving the President of the United States, as well as the rest of the First Family, from a terrorist cell that has established its operations in Chicago. Armed with a sniper rifle, players assume the role of the world's top sniper, picking off terrorists one at a time to accomplish their goals.

Those hoping for a sniper-rifle peripheral to augment their iPhone experience will, sadly, be disappointed. Konami has converted the game's controls to make use of the device's touch screen. Silent Scope on Apple's platforms will include a number of different modes, including Arcade and Training, with Arcade mode offering Story, Shooting Range, and Time Attack options.

Silent Scope for the iPhone won't be the first time that Konami has brought its arcade rail shooter to mobile devices. In addition to a number of console installments, Silent Scope took position to fairly positive reviews on the Game Boy Advance in 2002.
