Sid Meier's Starships, the recently announced turn-based interstellar strategy title developed by Sid Meier himself, will launch on March 12, developer Firaxis Games announced today.

No Caption Provided

The $15 game will be available on that date for Windows PC, Mac, and iPad. Firaxis has not announced plans to bring the game to other platforms, such as Android, at least not yet.

In Starships, you'll control a fleet of starships as you journey through the galaxy to complete missions, protect planets and their inhabitants, and build a planetary federation.

As you trek through the stars, you'll be challenged to expand your federation's influence and reach. You'll also amass futuristic technology and take part in turn-based combat using a deep roster of customizable ships, some of which you can see in the image gallery below.

Starships also features integration with Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth, the groundwork for which publisher 2K Games recently introduced through an update for that game.

For more on Starships, check out GameSpot's interview with Meier.

Well, not going to waste $ on it after the total f*k up of Beyond Earth.

Think Homeworld remastered is going to keep me busy for a while. Going to wait on reviews for this game after the lackluster Civ: Beyond Earth.

I'll take a copy. And if really good and like, one for the iPad too.

Having watch all gameplay videos (they are 5, just check on youtube) I can surely say that this has triggered me on much more than Civ:BE did. Unlike BE , crucially this has been designed by Sid. So, don't need to think twice. This is a guarantee. The man is a legend. Have not played a single game that he designed and did not like.

Since it was mentioned, I would like to add that simplicity of design is a plus, when there is sufficient complexity hidden underneath. And in this case complexity is there. What is missing are the fancy videos, and product promotion, but why should this matter anyway?

Furthermore, I appreciate the fair price and take it as an apology on behalf of Sid for BE's sins.

What I appreciate even more is that there is no option to pre-order, or enroll in any alpha, beta, omega, whatever version of the game. This shows how confident Sid feels about his product, and the ethos of the man. He does it the old school way, the proper way.

So, I say beam me Mr. Sid for one more time like the good old days... ;)

PS Apologize for partly double posting the first paragraph, but could not find an option to remove it.

Launch in 3 weeks and we still haven't seen game play or preview? All it looks like milking franchise rather than stand alone game.

I love Sid Meier games, and I love sci-fi but for some reason I'm a bit dubious about this one.

My spidey senses are tingling.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I quite liked beyond earth. I think it's just because I got a bit bored of the Civ format (being based on planet earth with known technology).

But then I didn't buy Civ 5 so that's probably why I liked it.

I thought this was supposed to be a real video game? Not a mobile game? Now I'm definitely not getting it.

A) I don't get why it couldn't just be an expansion for Beyond Earth, and has to be a separate game, especially given the whole integration thing.

B) I like that it reminds me of the space stage of Spore... which was particularly awesome. But looking at the screenshots, it looks more like the Final Frontier mod from Civ 4: Beyond the Sword. Which was also particularly awesome.

15$ does seems like a fair price, but it also feels like the game might not be as deep as civ. This was a day 1 purchase but now I want to know more before spending my hard earned precious cash.

$15 seems reasonable. I'll give it a try AFTER its release. We all know the consequences of preorders by now
